    Age 94, passed away Tuesday, December 9, 2003 at a local hospital. She was born July 8, 1909 in Appleton, daughter of the late Martin and Christine [Nielen] Smits, and had been an Appleton and Maribel area resident all her life. She attended schoo at St. Joseph Grade School, Appleton. Dorothy married John M. Verkuilen, July 27, 1935, at St. Theresa Church in Appleton, and he preceded her in death October 11, 1962. She was a member of the Kellnersville and Maribel nutrition sites, and was a Christian Mother at St. James Catholic Church in Cooperstown. Dorothy was a seamstree all her life, she enjoyed playing cards, and truly loved helping people and spending time with her family.

    Survivors include a son, LeRoy [Vonne] Verkuilen, Maribel, and their children, Timothy, special friend [Kris Haese] Verkuilen; Jennifer [Jim] Reetz; and Mary Lee Verkuilen; a daughter, Chris [Thomas] Rettler, Sheboygan, and their daughter, Lisa [fiance Craig Hacker] Gangstad; three great grandchildren, Jenna Reetz, Lucas Gangstad; and Jacob Reetz; sister, Alice McGinnis; brother in-law, Clarence Kositzke; and sister in-law, Rose Smits, all of Appleton; and many nieces and nephews.

    Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; husband; son, David; four brothers and four sisters.

    Family and friends may call Thursday, December 11, 2003 from 5-8 p.m. at Knutson-Cotter Funeral Home, Denmark, where there will be a parish wake service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue on Friday from 9 a.m. until the hour of Mass at St. James Catholic Church in Cooperstown. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. Friday at the church, with Father Ron Colombo officiating. Interment will be in St. John Cemetery. Little Chute.

    McGinnis, Alice E.


    Alice E. McGinnis, age 98, of Appleton, died on Monday, November 23, 2009, at her home. Alice was born on January 20, 1911, in Appleton, to the late Martin and Christine (Neiland) Smits. She married James Vernon McGinnis on November 22, 1935, in Appleton; he preceded her in death on November 8, 1981.

    Survivors include her sons: James V. (MaryJane) McGinnis; Bill (Margaret) McGinnis; and Frank McGinnis; all of Appleton; nine grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. She is further survived by her sister-in-law, Rose Smits and her nieces and nephews.

    She was preceded in death by her brothers and sisters: George, Marie Smits, Dorothy Verkuilen, Lida McGinnis, Harriet Kositzke, Clarence, Harry, Anna Shriver and Joseph; and her great-grandson, Benjamin.

    Alice was well known for her love of providing meals to family and friends. She was also the supervisor of the card games at the VFW for 35 years, the proceeds of which were donated to the American Cancer Society.

    The Funeral Liturgy will be at 11 a.m. Friday, November 27, 2009, at ST. MARY CATHOLIC CHURCH, 312 S. State Street, Appleton, with Fr. Michael K. O'Rourke officiating. Friends may call directly at the church on Friday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of services. Interment will be in St. Mary Cemetery.

    The family would like to extend a sincere thank you to Dr. James Haine; the staff at Affinity Hospice, especially Tammy and Susan; and her personal caregivers Trisha, Angela and Judy; for their loving care.

    David J. Verkuilen

    David John Verkuilen, 3 month old son of Mr. and Mrs. John M. Verkuilen, 1513 N. Viola Avenue, died at 11:30 Sunday morning after an illness of a few days. He was born Agugus 23, 1944.

    Survivors are the parents; one brother, Leroy, at home; one sister, Christy Ann, at home; and a grandmother, Mrs. John H. Lamers, Little Chute.

    Funeral services will be held at 10 o'clock Tuesday morning at St. Therese Church, the cortege forming at 9:30 at the Valley Funeral Home. The Rev. M.A. Hauch will be in charge. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery. The body will be at the funeral home from this afternoon until the time of the service.
