Bernard William Fassbender

  • Note: Age 90, passed away Thursday, October 16, 2003 at Rennes Health Center, following a long illness resulting from a massive stroke in 1998. He was born December 8, 1912 in Hollandtown, Wisconsin son of the late Henry and Ida (Schultz) Fassbender. Butch married Marie Campbell on May 7, 1946 in Hilbert, Wisconsin.

    Butch a lifelong resident of Hollandtown, took over the running of his father’s cheese factory, White Clover Dairy at the age of 22, and presided over its development and growth for the next 58 years. Butch was also the founder of Holland Veal Inc., starting this new venture in 1977. He was very involved in Wisconsin’s dairy industry, and also served as a Director of the Whey Products Institute. The community of Hollandtown was important to him, and he was a member of the Hollandtown Volunteer Fire Department, and President of the Hollandtown Sanitary District. A lifelong member of St. Francis Parish, he served on the St. Francis Building Committee, and was instrumental in raising the funds for the development of the Hollandtown Community Park. Butch was also a Director at the Forest Junction/F&M Bank. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, having no greater joy than spoiling his grandchildren, as well as a loyal friend to many. Throughout his whole life as he was working the long hours to make White Clover what it is today, he never forgot the importance of his church and community, and the love of his family.

    He is survived by his wife of 57 years: Marie; his sons: Richard (Bonnie) Fassbender, Hollandtown; Gary (Susan) Fassbender, Appleton; and Daniel (Wende) Fassbender, Hollandtown; a sister: Mildred Gerharz, Kaukauna; and sisters-in-law: Stella Fassbender, Kaukauna; Dolores Fassbender, Land O’ Lakes; and a brother-in-law: Victor Busse, Hollandtown. He is further survived by nine grandchildren: Richard (Jill) Fassbender, Seymour; Kevin Fassbender, Kaukauna; Jay Fassbender, Hollandtown; Michael (Elena) Fassbender, Kaukauna; Kimberly Fassbender, Hollandtown, Kathryne and Bryan Fassbender, Appleton; Amanda and Jennifer Fassbender, Hollandtown, and great granddaughter: Tatjana Fassbender, Kaukauna. Butch is further survived by a brother-in-law: Arthur (Inie) Campbell and Leo (Angie) Campbell and many nieces and nephews.

    Butch was preceded in death by a son: Dennis; and siblings: Harold (Mary) Fassbender, Lorraine (Elmer) Vandenberg, Norbert Fassbender, brothers-in-law: LeRoy Gerharz, Hubert Fassbender, Ann (Syd) Derry and Rosemary Busse.

    The funeral liturgy for Butch will be held on Saturday, October 18, 2003 at 10:00 AM at ST. FRANCIS CATHOLIC CHURCH, Hollandtown, with Fr. Jim Lucas officiating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday (TODAY) from 4:00 – 8:00 PM and again Saturday, directly at the church from 9:00 AM until the hour of the service.

  • Note: Marie Elizabeth Fassbender, 89, of Hollandtown, Wisconsin, passed away at the St. Paul Home on Sunday, January 15, 2012, after a long illness resulting from many years of extremely high blood pressure. She was born March 28, 1922 in Hilbert, Wisconsin to the late Walter and Isabelle (Ruffing) Campbell. Marie was Salutatorian of the class of 1939, graduating from Hilbert High School. She moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin attending Beauty Culture School, receiving her diploma in 1941. Upon graduation she worked in salons in both Plymouth and Chilton, Wisconsin. On May 7, 1946 she married Bernard (Butch) Fassbender in Hilbert. They celebrated 57 years of marriage, he preceded her in death on October 16, 2003.

    Upon her marriage she moved to Hollandtown, where they raised four sons. She was devoted to her husband, Butch, and their family. Living in Hollandtown, she became an active member of St. Francis Parish.

    Marie not only loved her Catholic faith, she lived it. Her life was one of service, and making sure that those around her were well taken care of, was of the utmost importance. Even in the nursing home, she could be seen getting out of her own wheelchair to try to help someone else. She was giving until the end.

    In addition to her husband, she is preceded in death by her son Dennis, who at the age of 13 died, due to the result of an accident.

    Butch and Marie had always reached out to people grieving the loss of a loved one, but after Dennis' death, they felt a special need to reach those who were dealing with the loss of a child.

    Further preceding her in death is a brother: Arthur Campbell, a sister-in-law, Angela Campbell; brothers and sisters-in-law: Harold (Mary) Fassbender, Lorraine (Elmer) Vandenberg, Norbert (Stella) Fassbender, Mildred (LeRoy) Gerharz, Hubert (Dolores) Fassbender, Ann (Syd) Derry, Rosemary (Victor) Busse.

    Marie is survived by her sons: Richard (Bonnie) Fassbender, Gary (Susan) Fassbender, and Daniel (Wende) Fassbender; nine grandchildren: Richard (Nicole) Fassbender, Kevin (Abbi) Fassbender, Jay Fassbender (Jenny Edinger), Michael (Elena) Fassbender, Kimberly Fassbender, Kathryne Fassbender, Bryan Fassbender, Amanda Fassbender, Jenni Fassbender; and seven great-grandchildren: Tatjana, Braylon, Isabella, Emma, Ila, Gavin and Kaleb. She is further survived by her brother Leo Campbell; sister-in-law: Alvina Campbell, and many nieces and nephews.

    The funeral liturgy for Marie will be held on Thursday, January 19, 2012, at 5:00 p.m. at ST. KATHARINE DREXEL PARISH, ST. FRANCIS SITE, Hollandtown, with Fr. Willard Van de Loo officiating, and Fr. Jerry Pastors concelebrating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery.

    Friends may call at the church on Thursday from 2:00 p.m. until the hour of service.

    The family would like to extend their gratitude to Dr. Lee Vogel for her extraordinary care of Marie over the past 7 1/2 years, and to the staff at the St. Paul Home for their dedicated care during the past 3 1/2 years.

    Gerharz, Mildred E. "Hunce"


    Mildred Elizabeth (Fassbender) Gerharz, 93, passed away at St. Paul Home on Thursday, May 7, 2009. She was born in Hollandtown on Oct. 5, 1914, the daughter of the late Henry and Ida (Schultz) Fassbender. On Oct. 5, 1933, Hunce married her loving husband, Lee Gerharz, at St. Francis Catholic Church in Hollandtown. He preceded her in death in 1978. Hunce was a loving mother and devoted homemaker. She loved spending time with her children and grandchildren. Hunce also enjoyed going up north to their cabin in Lakewood.

    Hunce will be sadly missed by her children, Jim Gerharz, Anchorage, Alaska; Jerry (Ruth) Gerharz, Racine; Carol (Bill) Simon, Lindale, Texas; Susan (David) Schwartzbauer, Neenah; 14 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Stella Fassbender and Marie Fassbender.

    Hunce is preceded in death by her daughter, Mary Gerharz; granddaughter, Lynn Marie Gerharz; four brothers, three sisters; and daughter-in-law, Bernice "Bunnie" Gerharz.

    A Funeral Liturgy for Hunce will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, May 11, 2009, at St. Katharine Drexel, St. Mary Site, 119 W. Seventh Street, Kaukauna, with Fr. Jerry Pastors officiating. Friends may call at the church on Monday from 9 a.m. until the time of service.

    Funeral services for Leroy C. Gerharz, 69, a lifetime resident of this city, were at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Mary Catholic Church, with the Rev. Charles Fredericks and the Rev. Mike Koch officiating. Interment was in the parish cemetery.

    Mr. Gerharz of 217 West Sixth Street, died at 12:45 a.m. Friday, January 13, following a lingering illness.

    He was born November 12, 1908 in Kaukauna, and had been employed at the Kaukauna Klub for more than 30 years. He retired in 1971. He was a member of Kaukauna Council No. 1033, Knights of Columbus.

    Survivors include his wife, Mildred Fassbender Gerharz; three daughters: Mary of Kaukauna, Mrs. William (Carol) Simon of Harlingen, Texas, and Mrs. David (Susan) Schwartzbauer of Neenah; two sons, James of Anchorage, Alaska, and Jerome of Cleveland; a brother, Edwin of Shawano; a sister, Mrs. Blanche Langlois of Detroit; a half-sister, Mrs. June Fons of Tustin, California; and 13 grandchildren.

    Pallbearers were Tim Busse, Tom, Dick and Ken Fassbender, Jack De Koch, and Robert Parman.

    The Greenwood Funeral Home assisted the family with arrangements.

He was born June 20, 1920, in Hilbert, son of the late Walter and Isabelle (Ruffing) Campbell. He married Alvina M. Zahringer on November 12, 1946, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Sherwood.

    Art devoted his life to farming with his family. He loved planting and growing; he was always so proud of his trees, gardens, and lush green lawn that surrounded the Campbell Homestead since 1878. Art was a lifelong member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Hilbert where he sang in the choir for 55 years. He was also a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters and the Men's Club. Art enjoyed cheering for the Green Bay Packers, reading and dancing; he and Alvina enjoyed many dances together whether they were in a dance hall, or just around the kitchen table. He was gifted with a fantastic business sense, and an incredible memory. Art was always able to recall important dates in his family's history, make informed and accurate business decisions for his farm, and call to mind the exact time and date when he had last visited with someone. Art made sure to visit with his friends as often as possible. He loved to share stories of his upbringing and times he shared with those he loved. Art was proud of his life; proud of his Catholic faith, proud of his Irish heritage, and extremely proud of his family. He was a patient and disciplined individual who was truly an inspiration to those that knew him.
    Survivors include his wife: Alvina; eight children: James (Deborah) Campbell of Menasha, Thomas (Marlene) Campbell of Darboy, Steve (Crystal) Campbell of Appleton, Joe (Cynthia) Campbell of Hilbert, John (Joyce) Campbell of Kiel, Karen (Rick) Hertel of Neenah, Mike (Shelley) Campbell of Menasha, Lynn (Bill) Hertel of Grafton; 21 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; a sister: Marie Fassbender of Kaukauna; a brother: Leo (Angela) Campbell of Hilbert; and two brothers-in-law: Clarence Zahringer of Sherwood, and Irvin Zahringer of Menasha. Art is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
    He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter: Ann Campbell; a grandchild: Donovan Campbell; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Leo (Mabel) Zahringer, Walter (Catherine) Zahringer, Ann Zahringer, Anita (Al) Hemauer, Roman Zahringer, Rose (Art) Zahringer, and Butch Fassbender.
    Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. on Thursday, January 13, 2011, at St. Mary's Catholic Church (108 S. 6th St.) in Hilbert with the Rev. Matt Simonar officiating.
