Biography

  • Birth: Nancy L Young was born on February 5, 1942.
  • Death: She died on November 16, 2015, at age 73.
  • Note: Nancy L. Hassell passed away on Monday afternoon, November 16, 2015 at the age of 73 in the arms of her husband.

An Appleton native, she attended Appleton West High School. Her life changed when her husband-to-be spied her one day. Her many skills and attributes came in handy as a teacher's wife, as there were many houses to buy and redecorate. Nancy plunged into this with her energy & positive force; renovating, decorating; finding furniture; making each home as cozy and beautiful as the last. Then there was searching at rummage sales and thrift stores for antiques, which thrilled her when she found the right pieces to bring her home to high splendor.

Nancy was a great cook, hosting many big family meals & holiday gatherings that everyone looked forward to attending. She was also a great artist with a sewing machine; making children's clothes, square dancing outfits and holiday decorations.

She also enjoyed four years of fun, on a five acre farmette and became skilled at "fresh from the farm" family meals. Her children had a barrel of fun in all of the out buildings and the great outdoors.

Taking long walks and bike rides kept her in great shape and ready for action. She enjoyed square dancing and dancing of all kinds. Her cakes and brownies went fast at church pot lucks, turning them into gourmet buffets.

Nancy met David H. Hassell in late fall in 1965 and were married on June 4, 1966, almost 50 years of marriage. They had four children; Theresa (Rick) Headley, Appleton; Brian, Chicago; Kari (Michael) LaRusso; Peach Tree City, GA; and Melissa (Cory) Pitsch, Menasha. Nancy is further survived by her husband and eight grandchildren: Alexander, Danielle, Matthew, Courtney, Kaitlin, Michael, Taylor and James. Brothers David (Jeanne) Young, James (Anna) Young, Gary Young and sister Debra Becken, and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by parents Irvin Young, Adella Young, sister Suzanne Young, and one very popular granddaughter, our little angel Briana Catherine Headley.

Always busy and active she looked to make money but always was home when the kids came home from school. She found a perfect match for her, when she provided loving child care for a large group of youngsters. This later turned into cleaning banks and houses. By word of mouth, she had more than she could handle and subcontracted jobs to help other women get started. Nancy's outstanding work showed through in our home, always keeping it spotless and organized.

Breaking their work cycles, Nancy and Dave headed to Florida when they became empty nesters. Nancy really loved her time in Florida as she hated winter something fierce. Florida saved Nancy from basements and second floors (a FL phenomenon) giving her time to nurture flower gardens and other hobbies. As displaced foreigners in Florida, people were all looking for a friendly face and a smile. Nancy made many friends and enjoyed meeting for coffee, games, lunches, movies and the many huge flea markets across Florida.

Nancy reluctantly left Florida after 14 years, returning to the north-country, as her mother was languishing in a nursing home. Her mother really cherished the daily visits with her daughter. Nancy really felt good about being there for her. Then her mother-in-law was soon in a nursing home and Nancy was glad to help there as well.

The last few years Nancy fought many medical issues but when she was feeling good she enjoyed going to the casino and spending time with her family.

The Hassell family wishes to thank the Grand Chute Fire Dept., Police Dept. personnel and the Crisis Response team who gave their support.

A memorial is being planned to celebrate her life.

"Your memory is our keepsake, with which we'll never part. God now has you in his loving arms, and we will always have you in our heart."

    We Love you Mom!
