  • Note: Spencer Alfred Vandehey, 70, a resident of the Manning community passed away on Tuesday morning, April 21, 2015 at the Providence St Vincent Medical Center in Portland.

    Recitation of the Holy Rosary will be said at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, April 24, 2015 held at St Francis of Assisi Catholic Church; 39135 NW Harrington Rd in Roy, OR.

    Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 25, 2015 at St Francis Catholic Church in Roy. Rite of Christian Burial and Vault interment will follow the Mass held at St Francis Catholic Cemetery.

    Family and friends are invited to attend a reception following the burial held in the school basement.

    Spencer was born on December 20, 1944 in Forest Grove, OR He was the fourth oldest of seven boys born to Anthony and Marcella (Kalsch) Vandehey. He was raised on the family farm by East Dairy Creek just south of Roy, OR. He attended St Francis of Assisi Grade School and Banks High School graduating with the Class of 63.

    He fulfilled his enlistment obligation towards his country by joining the Oregon National Guard and served at Ft Ord. While enlisted he was one of several that had contracted spinal meningitis.

    Spencer was united in marriage to Judy Heynderickx in 1966 and they made their home in Wilkesboro, they later divorced in 1976. He met Valorie Lynn Johnson while on a blind date, they soon began dating and were married on February 11, 1989 in Roy, OR. Following their marriage they made their home in Wilkesboro until 2001 when they moved to Manning, OR.

    Spencer attended Salem Tech and graduated with a civil and structural engineering degree and he was hired by Dames & Moore, geotechnical consulting engineers. There he was trained in the use of the Dutch cone penetrometer, employing the devise for subsurface exploratory sounding. Spencer started his business, Vandehey Soil Exploration, shortly thereafter and has been involved up until six months ago when he was forced to retire due to his illness.

    He enjoyed the outdoors, fishing hunting and camping. He also enjoyed panning for gold, "Gold mining" as he would call it and spending time with his family and friends. He was a gifted singer and had recorded songs with his brother, mostly religious which are cherished today by his family. Halloween was his favorite holiday, Spencer had a great sense of humor and always loved to prank on his brothers. His grandchildren had a special place in his heart and he would spend time them with tractor rides and walks in the woods.

    He is preceded in death by his parents.

    Survivors include his loving wife; Valorie, three children and their spouses; Michael Vandehey of Seattle, WA, Jennifer and James Esse of Washougal, WA, Kayla and Aaron Lutz of Keizer, five grandchildren; Anthony, Joey, Rowan, Vincent and Tiernan six brothers and their spouses; Gary and Connie Vandehey, Monte and Joan Vandehey, Fr. Scott Vandehey, Reed and Carila Vandehey, Phil and Tina Vandehey, Tim and Clara Vandehey and many nieces and nephews.

    The family suggest donations in Spencer's name to St. Francis of Assisi Church Music or Providence Hospice.
