    Obituary
    Nic Faust
Kaukauna's Pioneer Insurance Agent and Prominent Citizen Summoned by Death.

Nicholas Faust, aged 72 years, one of the oldest insurance men in the state of Wisconsin in point of continuous service, died at his home on Wisconsin avenue, Sunday evening at 8:30 o'clock, from pneumonia brought on by exposure. Mr. Faust was injured, rendering him unconscious, just a month ago by being thrown by a train starting too quick while he was in the act of alighting from the smoker of the Northwestern evening train at the north side depot. He struck on his head and laid for some time in an unconscious condition on the icy platform, the exposure causing an attack of pneumonia which developed ten days later ending in his death.

Nicholas Faust was born in Prussia, January 3, 1841, and came with his parents to Milwaukee in 1846 when he was five years old, settling on a farm six miles from that city, where they lived until 1854, removed two years afterwards to Fond du Lac and again to Calumet county, town of Harrison, where another farm was cleared-up by the elder Faust and his hardy pioneer children who participated in all the hardships and deprivations which accompanied the lives of the first settlers of Wisconsin and the great west.

On December 26, 1863, he married Miss Mary K. Furstenberg, and a little over a year later he enlisted. He had served several years as a member of the Indigent Soldiers Commission. He became a member of Paul A. Beaulieu Post No. 247, G. A. R., in 1889, and was elected Post Commander in 1895 and afterwards to other positions being adjutant for several years up to the time of his death.

Nicholas Faust has always been a business man of strictest integrity and with his comrades of the Grand Army filled a place which was indispensable as he was always at his post of duty as adjutant and acting chaplain for many years. He had endeared himself to all his comrades by his every ready willingness to bear his part and een more of any duty to be performed.

Surviving are his wife and the following children: Joseph J., Matt G. and Charles J., of this city; Louis G. Sheboygan; Henry L., Oshkosh; Katherine Berendsen of Green Bay, and the following sisters: Mrs. Katie Howe, Portland, Oregon; Mrs. Matt Renn, Appleton; Mrs. Joseph Renn, Town of Kaukauna.

Beautiful floral offerings were given by the following: Floral pillow from his children; Bouquets from W. R. C. and G. A. R.; Mr. and Mrs. M. Van Abel, Mr. and Mrs. Al. Koch, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Minkebidge, Richard McCarty, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Minkebidge, Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Delbridge, Miss Irene Hawley, Mrs. F. Lemerence, Mrs. H. Van Vogel, Mrs. J. Van Egeren.

The active pallbearers were: Jacob Lang, Richard McCarty, Herman Runte, Joseph Wittman, John Mueller and Casper Foegen.

The honorary pallbearers were his G. A. R. Post Comrades, J. H. Chamberlain, Peter Philipps, James Hamilton, James Conway, John Krell and John Banker.

    A. H. Furstenberg, Mrs. Faust's brother, who served in the same company during the Civil war, attended the last sad rites, from Adair, Iowa. Three others, all relatives of the two families, were in the same regiment during the war.

Although in his early days when places of learning were not plenty, his education was limited to the public schools, but when he took up the insurance business his natural tact easily provided him a way to handle everything and he soon became an expert in that line and his advice was valued even by the best of companies. His business covered not only the whole city of Kaukauna but extended far out into the surrounding territory, especially in the towns of Harrison and Sherwood, where he was well known for a probity of character in all business dealing seldom found in these days of sordid gain. Mr. Faust was well equipped to conduct the large amount of patronage extended to him and to which he paid his personal attention with indefatigable zeal right up to the time of the injury which caused his death.

Mr. Faust came to Kaukauna with his family in 1890 where they have since resided. In 1908 he, with his son, Charles, and August Heinz, organized the Fox River Health and Accident company of which corporation he was president. Mr. Faust has held many offices of public trust, serving in Calumet county for several years as supervisor, also in Outagamie county as supervisor, also as assessor and treasurer of the city of Kaukauna, with honor to himself and the satisfaction of those he served.

Those attending the funeral ceremony from out of town were his children, Henry Faust and wife of Oshkosh, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Berendson, Green Bay, Mr. and Mrs. Louis Faust, Sheboygan; others were Joseph Furstenberger, brother of Mrs. Faust of Adair, Iowa; Henry Dernberger, Brillion; Louis Berendson, Mrs. F. Lemerence, Mrs. Joseph Van Egeren, Mrs. Ben Van Vogel, Green Bay, Henry Dernberger, Brillion; Barney Hoffman and wife, Hilbert; Frank Meyers and wife, Buchanan; Matthew Renn and wife, Buchanan; Mr. and Mrs. Anton Van Oyen, Mr. and Mrs. Urban Deuster, Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Lutz, Mrs. Edward Lutz, W. Hincheliff, Appleton; Mrs. Schwalbach, Harrison.
