The son of Theodore Sr. and Lucy (McDaniel) Smits was born March 7th, 1923, in Kaukauna, Wisconsin.He was married to the love of his life, Elizabeth Jane Daul of Freedom on June 28th, 1949.A veteran of WWII, Mr. Smits served 3 years with the US Army Air Force from 1943 to 1946. He served as a member of the Troop Carrier Command, Technical Training Command, Air Transport Command and the 7th Air Force in the Pacific Theater.After his military service, Norval attended the University of Oklahoma and graduated from Lawrence University with a Bachelor of Science degree. He taught mathematics and science at Weyauwega and Kewaunee high schools. After being awarded a National Science Foundation Grant he obtained his Masters Degree from the University of Minnesota. He also pursued post graduate studies at the University of Wisconsin, Iowa State University, and Franklin and Marshall College in Lancaster Pennsylvania.From 1958 to 1985 he taught mathematics at Green Bay East High School. He was a member of NEA, WEA, and GBEA educational associations. He enjoyed working summers for the Wisconsin State Highway Commission as an inspector of bridge construction.During his retirement he became an adjunct professor at the University of Wisconsin Green Bay.His recreational pursuits included sailing, motorcycling and flying. He served as a member of the Civil Aviation Patrol and was an active member of the EAA.Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth "Betty"; sons, Dr. Michael (Susan) Appleton, WI; Patrick (Jodi) Sister Bay, WI; daughter, Mary (Gregory) Larsen, De Pere, WI; grandchildren: Sarah, Jennifer and Alexander Larsen, Jesse, and Shannon Smits; brother, Floyd Smits, Kaukauna; sister, Dorothy Rebitz Atlanta, GA; sisters-in-law, Lorraine Calaway and Rose Daul; and brother-in-law, Matthew (Mary Ann) Daul.   • Note: Kenneth Smits, 86, passed away peacefully at The Heritage Hospice Residence in Appleton. Ken was born in Kaukauna, on Dec. 16, 1924, son of the late Theodore and Lucy (McDaniel) Smits. Ken graduated from Kaukauna High School and then attended the Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point. He also attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

    Ken was employed by Kimberly-Clark as an engineer for over 30 years. Ken served his country on two occasions, as a member of the Merchant Marines during World War II and later in the United States Army during the Korean War. Ken enjoyed golfing with his loving wife, Judy, wintering in Florida and attending anything that had to do with his grandchildren. He truly adored them.

    Ken is survived by two children, Kevin (Amy) Smits, Colorado; and Kerry (Matt) Lang, Darboy; six grandchildren, Delaney and Mac Kenzie Smits, and Kassandra, McDaniel, Erin and Collin Lang; his mother-in-law, Jennie Saler, Iron Mountain; two brothers, Norval (Betty) Smits, De Pere; and Floyd Smits, Kaukauna; a sister, Dorothy Rebitz, Kennesaw, Ga.; and two brothers-in-law, John Saler, Marinette; and Bob (Cheryl) Saler, Iron Mountain. Ken is further survived by several nieces and nephews; his favorite golfing buddy, Joe Leveque; and his dog, Libby.

    He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Judy, in 2007; Judy's father, Ray Saler; a brother-in-law, Jim Rebitz; and brothers and sisters, Beatrice (Orv) Yingling, Loretta (Leo) Schmalz, Angie (Bill) Brugman, Jerry (Eleanor) Smits and Ted (Ola) Smits.

    The funeral liturgy for Ken will be held at 4 p.m.on Monday, Oct. 10, 2011, at ST. PAUL CATHOLIC CHURCH, 410 E. Wallace Street in Combined Locks, with Fr. Andrew Kysely officiating. Military honors will follow the service. Interment will be in the parish cemetery. Visitation will be Monday from 2 p.m. until the time of the service.

  • Note: Floyd Anthony Smits, age 85, of Kaukauna, passed away on Sunday, February 21, 2016 at Brewster Village. He was born in Kaukauna on June 25, 1930 to the late Theodore and Lucy (McDaniel) Smits.

    Floyd served in the Army from 1951 to 1953 and was stationed in Salzburg, Austria. He loved to tell how The Sound of Music was being filmed there during that time. After his military service, Floyd attended Beauty School in Green Bay and later opened Floyd's House of Beauty in Kaukauna. Floyd enjoyed cooking, gardening, music, and visiting with people. He loved the time spent at his cottage in Door County.

    Floyd is survived by his sister Dorothy Rebitz and sister-in-law Elizabeth "Betty" Smits; he is further survived by several nieces, nephews, patrons, and close friends. He is preceded in death by his parents; siblings: Ken (Judy) Smits, Beatrice (Orv) Yingling, Loretta (Leo) Schmalz, Angie (Bill) Brugman, Jerry (Eleanor) Smits, Ted (Ola) Smits, and Norval Smits; and brother-in-law Jim Rebitz.

    In keeping with Floyd's wishes there will be no funeral service. Inurnment will be at Holy Cross Cemetery, which is an extension of Oviatt Street where Floyd was born, raised, and owned his business.
