James Wenzel Zdanovec

M, b. August 8, 1909, d. September 23, 1973

Parents

Biography

  • Birth: James Wenzel Zdanovec was born on August 8, 1909 in Marathon County, Wisconsin.
  • Marriage: He and Katherine Elizabeth Glugla were married on May 16, 1936 in Antigo, Langlade Co, Wisconsin.
  • Death: James Wenzel Zdanovec died on September 23, 1973, at age 64.
  • Note: James Wenzel Zdanovec is my Dad's father and my grandfather. My grandfather was born in the town of Harrison in Marathon County, one mile west of his future bride, Katherine Glugla. He was the seventh of eight children. His parents were Joseph and Margaret (Halada) Zdanovec. He lived in a home with no electricity or running water. His mother cooked all of their meals on a wood stove. They also heated their home with fire wood they made from the trees in the woods surrounding their homestead. They had to pump all of their water from a 17 foot well that was just north of their house. They always had a fresh source of water.
Grandpa Zdanovec went to grade school at Eau Claire Valley School. He graduated from the 8th grade in the Town of Harrison. High school was not an option for him. By the time he graduated from eighth grade his older brothers and sisters had all left home, so he had to help his parents with chores on the farm. Later, one of his older brothers returned home and took over the farm and my grandpa was able to go out and get a job.
Grandpa Zdanovec grew up being a farmer and a logger. After he left the farm he worked making bowling pins at the Vulcan for 5 ½ years. He then went to work as a conductor on the railroad for a number of years. The pay was good, but he did not like staying away from his family.
He decided to quit the railroad. He had a love of nature and trees from growing being surrounded by woods, so he decided to study to be a forest ranger. He studied very hard and passed the test to be a forest ranger. He enjoyed this job until he retired at the age of 55.
Grandpa Zdanovec lived music. He self-taught himself to the drums, saxophone, and accordion. He was one of those people who could hear a song once and immediately could repeat it note for note.
In his free time, he liked to spend his time doing things outdoors with his family. He enjoyed activities like fishing, boating, walks in the woods, and weekend visits to his cottage on Pickerel Lake in Forest County. He also played music on his front porch for the neighbors who enjoyed it very much. When he finally brought a TV set his favorite shows were Lawrence Welk and Gunsmoke.
Grandpa Zdanovec married Katherine Glugla on May 16, 1936. They had 8 children. My dad was the youngest. When my Grandpa first saw my dad he said, “What a little buddle of joy!” He was glad to have a healthy cute little son. He spent a lot of time playing with him and singing to him.
My Grandpa Zdanovec died on September 23, 1973 after a long illness with Arteriosclerosis. He died in the ambulance on the way to the hospital.

Katherine Elizabeth Glugla

F, b. October 23, 1915

Parents

Family: James Wenzel Zdanovec (b. August 8, 1909, d. September 23, 1973)

Biography

  • Birth: Katherine Elizabeth Glugla was born on October 23, 1915 in Marathon County, Wisconsin.
  • Marriage: She and James Wenzel Zdanovec were married on May 16, 1936 in Antigo, Langlade Co, Wisconsin.
  • Note: My grandmother Katherine Zdanovec was born on October 23, 1915 in the town of Harrison in Marathon County. She grew up there on a dairy farm. She is my Dad's mother. There were 9 children in her family. She was 7th in line. Her parents were John and Rose (Kryshak) Glugla.
Katherine went to Eau Claire Valley Elementary School in the Town of Harrison. When she was growing up she liked to bake, sew, and spend chickens, dogs, cats, and pick potatoes. As a young girl she had fun riding in an old buggy with horses pulling it. Her and her brothers and sisters had fun sliding down the hill behind the barn and ice skating on the pond. Her family also traveled seven miles to Antigo every Sunday for church in a sleigh pulled by horses. When their work was done in the fields they would play baseball.
She attended Antigo High School and graduated in 1933. When she was in high school she had to walk to school. In high school my grandma liked to go to barn dances and watch my grandpa play in the band.
Katherine's first three years in high school she had to work for her room and board. That was the only way she could go to high school in town. During her high school days she worked as a waitress in a restaurant. She had to walk to and from work. In her senior year of high school her sister Josie bought a Model T Ford. Everyone in her family loved going for rides in the Model T! Then she worked in the shoe factory.
My grandma met my grandpa James Zdanovec at a very young age. They grew up together. He lived on mile from her. His family used to come over and help out at harvest time and her family would help his family. In those days neighbors helped each other out. She married my grandpa on May 16, 1936 at St. Hyacinth Catholic Church in Antigo. They had eight children together. The oldest child, Edward, died as a baby from whooping cough and pneumonia. My dad is the youngest child.
My grandma also worked on the Harvester and on a mink ranch. When times got tough she worked at the pea canning factory. She liked working at the canning factory. She did not like working on the harvester with all the dust and dirt and did not like the smell of mink at the mink farm. She also worked at Amron Factory making ammunition for the service men. She worked there until my grandpa got sick.
My grandma makes the best chocolate chip cookies. She is very funny and likes when we go to see her. She says my Dad was always a good by and never talked back. He was always helping out the neighbors with shoveling and raking.
