  • Note: Four Generations of Children Mourn Death of Mrs Sarah Bricco Grenier. The recent death of Mrs. Sarah Bricco-Grenier, aged 92, a former resident of this city, occurring at her home near Bear Creek marked the passing of a women declared to be the mother of more descendants than any other women in the United States. She left a total of 403 offspring, extending into the fifth generation. Traveling by steamboat and team Mrs Grenier with her husband, Saul Bricco, to whom she was married November 21, 1853, in a little village on the shores of Lake Champlain, came west the following spring, settling in this city. They resided here until 1870 when they moved to Outagamie County and located on a farm near the Town of Maple Creek. Ten of Mrs Grenier's 11 children are still living in various parts of Wisconsin and the eldest, Mrs M. J. Monty, of Bear Creek, 72 years old, mother of 15 children numbers her own descendants past the 100 mark. A son, William Bricco, was the father of 16 children. Mrs. Grenier kept a sheep and each year spun its wool on a old fashioned spinning wheel, knitting the yarn into stockings which she sold to obtain money for small articles she desired. Her last fleece was spun last summer and final pair of stocking was knit last may. Mrs. Grenier was born at Grand Maltice, Canada, January 1, 1934. Mr Solomon Bricco was killed May 14, 1877. He was felling a tree when his dog ran under the falling trunk. Mr Bricco ran to drive it from danger and was struck down. He was 94 years of age. Several years later Mrs Bricco married Oliver Grenier of Northport, who died after a few years. Mrs Grenier's children included Mrs Mary Jane Monty of Bear Creek, Saul Bricco of New London, Mrs Philomena Roberts and Mrs Sarah Ann Balthazar of the Town of Deer Creek, Mrs Agnes Balthazar of Maple Creek (at whose home she died) William Bricco of Elderon, Mrs Jessie Balthazar of Whittenberg. Another daughter, Mrs Adeline Belongia of New London, died December 18, 1925. The youngest daughter is 60 years of age. The Grandchildren number 121.

    On Friday morning, March 31, the soul of Mrs. Martin O'Connor entered the "City Eternal." Up to a few weeks from her death she was in the best of health. The cause of her death was typhoid pneumonia. At first Mrs. O'Connor was a victim of la grippe but she suffered a relapse, which later developed into typhoid pneumonia. The best of medical aid was obtained but of no avail. Mrs. O'Connor was formerly Margaret Rowhan. She was married to Martin O'Connor and up to two years ago has resided in the twon of Maple Grove. She was a loving wife and mother and will be missed by a host of friends. The funeral mass was held at St. Mary's church in Appleton, of which she was a member. The funeral took place at Maple Grove. She is survived by a husband and six sons and four daughters, namely: John, James, Emmet, William, Clarence, Edwin, Catherine, Florence, Myrtle and Frances. The funeral was one of the largest held at Maple Grove for some time. Her six sons were pall bearers. The community unites in sympathy for the heart-broken family. May she rest in peace. (Long poem)

Norbert Antone Green

  • Note: Norbert Green was my great-grandpa. Grandpa Green bought a farm in 1936 in Freedom. He had the farm for over 40 years. The farm had a lot of animals including cows, chickens, pigs and horses. My grandpa had to start the chores early in the morning. All of the kids had to help with the chores. My Grandpa Earl hated picking rocks in the field.
    The farmland and barn was sold in 1976. Grandpa Green lived in the house until 1980. Now a cousin has owned it since 1991.

Henrietta Wilhelmina Schumacher

    Green, Harriet (nee Schumacher)Seymour Our Mother, Harriet, age 89 years, went to her eternal home on February 24, 2007, to join her husband, Norbert A. Green, who passed away August 27, 1989. She was born January 13, 1918, in Little Chute, and moved to Kaukauna shortly thereafter. Harriet was the oldest of four children to the late William and Louise (Williamson) Schumacher. Harriet and Norbert lived and farmed for over forty years in the Town of Kaukauna and moved to the Village of Freedom in 1976. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on October 14, 1987.

    Harriet was a member of St. Nicholas Catholic Church, Christian Mothers and the Freedom Golden Agers. She was an avid card player.

    She is survived by her son, Earl and Bernie Green; daughters: Elaine and Dan Bowers, Joyce and Jim Golden, Janet and Jim Van Hoof and Donna and Bob Woldt; 23 grandchildren: Mike, John, David, Donn, Sue, Ann, Pat, Paul, Bob, Dale, Ken, Ed, Dan, Lynn, Deb, Kim, Kari, Kelly, Mark, Kip, Sherri, Jill and Sara and 48 great-grandchildren. Harriet is further survived by Norbert's brothers and sisters: John (Germaine) Green, Freedom; Frances Wieland Moundry, Kaukauna; Rosella Kortz and Verna Berkens, Little Chute; Eleanor and Bud Bowers, Wrightstown; Jim Van Vreede and Beady Green, Kaukauna.

    Harriet was preceded in death by her husband, parents, sister and brother-in-law, Marie and Andrew VanDera; brothers: Nicholas and Henry Schumacher; great-grandson, Aaron Gerdman; father and mother-in-law John and Dora Green. Norbert's family, Vince and Elaine Green, Bill and Lorraine Green, Florence and Leo Schmidt, Bob Green, Esther VanVreede, Charlotte Green, Orin Kortz, Gerald Berkens, Leo Wieland and Harry Moudry.

    The funeral liturgy for Harriet will be held at 5 p.m. on Thursday, March 1, 2007, at ST. NICHOLAS CATHOLIC CHURCH, Freedom, with Fr. Dave Hoffman officiating. Burial will be in the parish cemetery. Visitation will be held at the Church on Thursday, from 2 p.m. until the time of mass. In lieu of flowers, memorials to St. Nicholas Catholic Church and the Freedom Food Pantry appreciated.

    The family would like to extend their sincere gratitude to the nurses at Parkside Care Center. Your care, love and compassion were so evident during mother's stay. Thank you for making Parkside "her home" during her final days. Special thank you to Fr. Dave Hoffman, Deacon Don, the pastoral staff from St. John Catholic Church, Little Chute and to Dr. Richter. Also, Erv DeBruin and Fran Kempen for all his jokes which really made her day.

    Age 87, died unexpectedly Thursday, December 30, 1982. She was born September 6, 1895, in the Town of Grand Chute and had been a lifelong resident of the Appleton area. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic church, its christian Ladies, the catholic Daughters, the St. Elizabeth Hospital Auziliary, the A.A.R.P., and the Golden Agers. Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Margaret Geerts, Little Chute; two sons: Robert M Ertl and James L. Ertl, both of Appleton; three sisters: Mrs. Etta Schwarts, and Miss Helen Kohl, both of Appleton; Mrs. Margaret Carr, Milbank, South Dakota; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Louis in 1936, two brothers, John Kohl and Edward C. (Ted) Kohl, and a sister, Laura Carr. The funeral will be 11 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph Catholic church, 404 W. Lawrence Street, with Rev. Roger Zach officiating. Interment will be in St. Joseph Cemetery. Friends may call at the Wichmann Funeral Home, 527 N. Superior Stree, from 4 until 9 p.m. Sunday and after 8 a.m. Monday until the corege leaves for church. The prayer and scripture service will be at 7:30 p.m. Sunday. A memorial fund is bring established.
