  • Note: Robert E. Ahasay, 94, De Pere, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, died Friday, February 19, 2016, surrounded by his wife and daughters. He was born on September 8, 1921, in Kaukauna to John L. and Mary (Mc Cabe) Ahasay.

    Bob graduated from De Pere High School and spent his entire life in De Pere. On September 28, 1946, he married Ruby E. Kolb at Old St. Joseph Church on St. Norbert College Campus in De Pere. During WWII, Bob served in the U.S. Army. He was a proud veteran and a member of the American Legion #230 and De Pere VFW #2113. Bob served on the De Pere Police Dept., retiring as a detective after 25 years. He was a hardworking man who was a whistling virtuoso, known for his quick wit and one liners.

    Bob was an avid golfer and worked as a Golf Pro at Town & Country. He taught many people to golf. Bob was instrumental in the development of Hilly Haven Golf Course. After his retirement from the Police Department, Bob had a second career at Broadway Chevrolet, where he worked well into his 80s. Bob loved cars and driving.

    Survivors include his wife, Ruby, whom he worshipped, six daughters and sons-in-law, Mary Ahasay, Maureen "Preena" Laughlin, Sarah "Lynn" Amundson and her special friend, Frank Gretzinger, Colleen "Coco" and Tom Gatske, Kathleen "Kelly" and Bob Hart, Melinda Ahasay; seven grandchildren, Tricia Amundson, Eric (April) Amundson, Tara (Travis) Irish, Kayla (fiancé, Ben Valley) Hart, Molly Gatske, Mandy (Patrick) Severson, Daniel (fiancée, Katie Sullivan) Ahasay; two great grandchildren, Logan and Ella Irish and Ruby Marie Severson, who will be born in April; one brother-in-law, John Early; one sister-in-law, Florence Ahasay. He is further survived by Ruby's family, Eugene Kolb, Lloyd (Bev) Kolb, Darrell (and his special friend, Kathy) Kolb.

    He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Mary; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Phyllis Early, Kathleen (Jim) Duckett, Ruth (Don) Kolb; four brothers, Clem (Kay) Ahasay, Cliff Ahasay, Tom (Toni) Ahasay, Bill Ahasay. He was also preceded in death by his son-in-law, David Laughlin; two brothers-in-law, Jerry (Nancy) Kolb, Bill (Lee) Kolb; two sisters-in-law, Trudy Kolb and Colleen Kolb.

    Friends may call at Our Lady of Lourdes Parish Family, 1307 Lourdes Ave., De Pere from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Tuesday. The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the church with Fr. Tim Shillcox, O.Praem. officiating. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery, De Pere.

    On Jan. 11, 1941, she married Clement F. Ahasay in Green Bay. He preceded her in death Sept. 21, 1976. Kathleen was employed as a stenographer and private secretary for the Larsen Company for 40 years. She enjoyed bowling.

    Survivors include her sister and brother-in-law, Agnes "Angie" and Maurice Murphy, Green Bay; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

    Friends may call after 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 4, at St. Joseph Catholic, 1224 12th Ave., where the Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Michael Ingold officiating. Burial will be in Ft. Howard Memorial Park.

  • Note: This story is about my great-grandma, Doreen McCabe. Doreen lived on a farm called the Bleickie Farm that was owned by her uncle. When she was 16 years old her mother died, and she had to quit school. She never graduated or finished high school. She was the oldest of 10 children. After her mom died she raised her 9 brothers and sisters. Doreen cooked, cleaned, did the laundry, and helped get her brothers and sisters off to school everyday. She also had to help them with their school work each night. Her dad worked and supported all the children financially, but Doreen had to take care of the rest.
    When she was 18 years old she met George. They dated for 6 years and when she was 24 years old she got married. They had 9 children. Her and her husband owned a dairy farm with his brother that was called VandeHei Bros.

    Sendzik, Doreen "Sweet Pea"


    Doreen "Sweet Pea" Sendzik, 93, passed away at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Helen and Ron Hietpas, on Thursday, July 17, 2009, surrounded by her family. The daughter of the late Patrick and Ella (Sullivan) Mc Cabe was born July 5, 1916, in the Town of Lawrence. Doreen's mother died when she was 16 and she raised her seven brothers and sisters. She attended Nicolet High School. Doreen married George Vande Hei at St. Paul's Catholic Church, Wrights-town, and he preceded her in death October 1, 1967. Doreen married John Sendzik on February 10, 1978, at St. Jude Catholic Church in Green Bay. He proceeded her in death on March 14, 2000.

    Doreen was a past member of St. Boniface Christian Mothers and a parish member and choir member at St. Jude Catholic Church. She was a loving mother who enjoyed traveling, canning, and baking.

    Doreen is survived by her children; Bonnie Vande Hei, Lois Vande Hei, Eleanor (Tom) De Groot, Joan (James) Calmes, Steven (Linda) Vande Hei, Melvin (Blanca) Vande Hei, Helen (Ron) Hietpas, Elaine (Fred) De Groot, Mary Haupt and special friend Rick Humphreys; twenty-one grandchildren and thirty-eight great-grandchildren; one brother and sister-in-law, Bob and Delores Mc Cabe; two sisters and two brothers-in-law: Elaine Van Domelen, Clarence Vande Hei, Dorothy Vander Loop, Elmer Kerkhoff.

    She was preceded in death by her two brothers, James and Jack Mc Cabe; two sisters: Betty Vandie and Rita Kerkhoff; two brothers-in-law: George Van Domelen and Henry Vander Loop.

    Family and friends may call from 4 to 6:30 p.m. Monday, July 20, 2009, at St. Jude Catholic Church, 1420 Division Street, Green Bay. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 6:30 p.m. Monday at the church with Fr. Don Everts, officiating. Burial in Mt. Calvary Cemetery.

    Vande Hei, Elizabeth M. "Betty" Mrs. Clarence (Betty) Vande Hei, 85, longtime resident of De Pere, passed away peacefully Friday, Sept. 7, 2007. Betty was born on Jan. 10, 1922, to Patrick and Ella McCabe. She married Clarence Vande Hei on July 17, 1941, at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Wrightstown, Wis. They recently celebrated 66 years of marriage and were blessed with 10 children. Betty was a loving wife, mother, sister and grandmother. She especially enjoyed spending time with her 26 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. For many years, Betty enjoyed mall walking and shopping with her sister, Elaine, whom she often referred to as her best friend. Betty loved to sew, bake, make people laugh with her Irish sense of humor, and was especially proud of her rose garden. Her Bible Study group in De Pere was also an important part of her life. Betty was a longtime member of St. Boniface/Our Lady of Lourdes Parish. Her best memories were the times when her extended family (all 74 of them) gathered for holidays and special occasions. Betty is survived by her loving husband, Clarence and her children, Don and Clara Lynn Vande Hei, Homestead, Fla.; Dan and Judy Vande Hei, De Pere; Karen and Marv Krause, Green Bay; Patti Vande Hei and Pat McGuire, Plymouth; Mike and Joanne Vande Hei, De Pere; Dave and Ann Vande Hei, De Pere; Chuck and Debbie Vande Hei, De Pere; Rick and Kris Vande Hei, De Pere; and Jayne and Mike Jensen, De Pere. Also surviving are her siblings, Doreen Senzik, Dorothy Vander Loop, Elaine Van Domelen, Bob (Delores) McCabe; sister-in-law, Marilyn McCabe, and brother-in-law, Elmer Kerkhoff. Welcoming Betty in Heaven are her parents; son, William; her aunt, Abigail Sullivan; sister, Rita Kerkhoff and brothers, Jack and Jim McCabe. Also preceding were brothers-in-law, George Vande Hei, Henry Vander Loop, George Van Domelen, and John Senzik. Dean was employed at Schreiber Foods for many years. He was an avid Packers and Brewers fan and also a talented wood worker. Dean enjoyed playing pool league at the Roundup in Green Bay. He will be remembered as a loving father, grandfather, brother and friend.

    He is survived by his two sons, Bryan and Eric (Kari) Van Beek; grandchildren, Kaiden and Ashton; siblings, Dale (Louise) Van Beek, Patti (William) Walton, David Van Beek, Denis (special friend, Liz) Van Beek, Dawn (Mike) Jolly; aunt, Lovita DeWitt; and many other nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

    In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister-in-law, Donna M. Van Beek.

  • Note: Mary A. Geurts, age 92, of Appleton, passed away at her home on Friday, September 12, 2014. Mary was born on December 29, 1921, in The Town of Lawrence, to the late Peter and Emma(Bougie) McCabe. She married Ivo Geurts, on September 9, 1944, in Wrightstown.

    Mary served as President of the Ladies Aid of St. Joseph Catholic Church in 1976, worked in the hot lunch program in the school and was a communion distributor, voluntered at the Community Blood Center and helped at the Yellow Brick Road Program at Appleton Medical Center. She also belonged to the Crafty Ladies at St. Joseph Catholic Church and is a member of the Catholic Daughters.

    Survivors include her husband of 70 years, Ivo; her children, Gary (Joan) Geurts, Ken (Dianne) Geurts, Denise (Dale) Skuldt, Michael (Ann) Geurts, Nanette Geurts, John Paul (Robert) Geurts; her 14 grandchildren and seventeen great grandchildren; her sisters, Beulah Gurnee, Audrey (Harold) Deprez, Patricia O'Keefe and Maureen (Vernon) Weyers; and her brother, Vincent McCabe. She was preceded in death by her siblings, Florian (Jack) Chambers, Eileen McCabe, David MCabe, Ed O'Keefe and Clarence Gurnee.

    The Funeral Liturgy will be at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, September 16, 2014, at ST. JOSEPH CATHOLIC CHURCH, 410 W. Lawrence Street, with Fr. Jim Leary, O.F. M. officiating. Friends may call directly at the church on Tuesday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of services.

    Interment will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, Appleton.

    In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established in Mary's name to benefit St. Joseph Catholic Church.
