  • Note: Marlene Schmitz, age 79, of Appleton, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on January 23, 2018. She was born on October 23, 1938, daughter of Herman and Erma Giese. She was baptized November 20, 1938 and confirmed in May, 1952. Marlene graduated from Gillett High School and went to work at AAL. She married Richard Schmitz on September 27, 1958 at Immanuel Lutheran Church. After moving to Greenville, Marlene went to work at Outagamie Nursing Home and Farm. Dick’s job took their family to Kimberly where they built their first house. Marlene then worked at Kaukauna Hospital and later at Family Heritage Nursing Home.

    In 1977 they bought and ran D&M Beverage Mart until 1987 when they moved to Minocqua. Many good times were had while they owned Tee Pee Campground on Lake Shishebogama right outside of Minocqua. In 1996 they moved back to Appleton.

    Marlene enjoyed volunteering at church. She belonged to LWML since the 1960’s and held various offices in the organization. She also enjoyed camping, cooking and baking, quilting and most importantly, being with her family.

    Marlene is survived by sons: Kenneth (Janice) Schmitz and Kebin (Kathy) Schmitz; a daughter, Karla (Curt) Sims; daughter-in-law, Peggy Schmitz; eight grandchildren: Rachel (Bill) Richards, Renee, Roxanne and Robyn Schmitz, Adam Schmitz (special friend Sophie Hanson), Megan (Ryan) Albrecht, Michael Sims, Kyle (special friend Kate Mish); four great-grandchildren, Erin, Ella and Eva Schmitz, and Atticus Sims; a brother, Herbert (Leah) Giese; two sister-in-law: Gloria Schmitz and Lavonne Schmitz; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

    Marlene was proceeded in death by her husband, Richard; a son Kurt; parents, Herman & Erma Giese; father and mother-in-law: Raymond and Helen Schmitz; brother, David (Joann) Giese; sisters: Harriet (Melvin) Buchholz, Doris (Bill) Parmentier and Joyce (Herman) Wasmund; sisters-in-law, Adeline (Delmar) Nieland and Muriel (Ted) Huiting; brothers-in-law: Jerry Schmitz and Gordy Schmitz.

    Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 27, 2018, at Faith Lutheran Church, 601 E. Glendale Ave., Appleton. Family and friends may gather at the church on Saturday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the service. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund will be established.   • Note: Richard E. Schmitz, age 70, of Appleton, died Friday, November 19, 2004 at home surrounded by his family.

    He was born July 27, 1934 to the late Raymond and Helen (Weber) Schmitz. In 1952 he entered the U.S. Navy and served in the Korean War. Richard married Marlene Giese on September 27, 1958. Together they owned and operated D & M Beverage Mart in Appleton for many years. The following ten years were spent at the Tee-Pee Campground in Minocqua, WI, where many good times and fond memories were made. Previous to owning the beverage mart, Richard worked for the Village of Kimberly. He enjoyed camping and fishing, but his greatest passion was deer hunting. His family always came first and together they enjoyed laughter and love. He was always an inspiration to his children and taught them to be successful at whatever they wanted to be.

    Survivors include his wife, Marlene; three sons, Kurt (Peggy) of Aniwa, WI; Kenneth (Janice) and Kevin (Kathy), all of Darboy; a daughter, Karla (Curt) Sims of Appleton; eight grandchildren, Rachel, Renee, Roxanne, Robyn, Adam, Megan, Michael, and Kyle; a sister, Adeline (Delmar) Neiland; two brothers, Jerry (Gloria) Schmitz and Gordon (Lavone) Schmitz. He is further survived by brothers and sisters-in-law, Joyce (Herman Jr.) Wasmund, Herbert (Leah) Giese, and Joann Grady; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother, Jimmy; a sister, Muriel (Ted) Huiting; brother-in-law, David Giese; and two sisters-in-law, Harriet (Melvin) Buchholz and Doris Parmentier.

    A memorial service to honor Richard will be at 6 p.m. Tuesday, November 23, 2004 at Faith Lutheran Church, 601 E. Glendale St., with Pastor Dan Thews officiating. Visitation will be from 2 p.m. until the time of the service. Military honors will follow the service at the church. Richard will be laid to rest at Highland Memorial Park. The family wishes to extend a heartfelt thank you to the hospice nurse Mary, their “Guardian Angel”, and to all hospice personnel and other caregivers that visited, including the wonderful volunteer, Ken.

  • Note: Mrs. Henrietta Voss, one of the oldest residents of the town of Little Wolf, died at her home at the age of 99 ears, 2 months, and 20 days. Cause of death was senility.

    She was born in Germany on November 21, 1836. In 1857 she was married to Christlieb Voss. Eight children were born to them of whom two have preceded the mother in death. Mr. Voss also passed away several years ago. In 1886 the family came to U.S. where they first resided in the state of Illinois. After a year’s time they came to Wisconsin and settled in the town of Little Wolf, not far from Manawa, where they have since lives. Advanced age took heavy toll of Mrs. Voss. During the last two years the health of the deceased was very poor. She had completely lost her eyesight, had become almost deaf, and was confined to her bed much of the time.

    She is survived by six children, Mrs. Edward Zantow, Christina (Herman) Krause, Albert and John Voss of Little Wolf, Henrietta (Edward) Jeske of the town of Union, and Mrs. Mathilda Voss of Gresham; one sister, Mrs. Mathilda Winkel, 48 grandchildren; 89 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.

    Funeral services were held at the home and from St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church of which she was a member. Rev. R. A. Karpipsky officiated and interment was in the Manawa Cemetery.
