  • Note: Edna Van Beek, 93, died peacefully at her daughter's home on Wednesday, March 31, 2004, surrounded by her family. She was born Oct. 21, 1910, to Ed and Lizetta Connelly. Edna was married for 49 years to Clifford Van Beek. He preceded her in death on March 13, 1982. From 1935-1970, Cliff and Edna worked side by side in Van Beek's Grocery Store and Meat Locker, formerly located at 850 Dousman St., an establishment founded in the 1920s by Clifford's father, Rudolph.

    Edna loved being with her family and through the years she shared golfing, bowling, boating, bridge, traveling and watching basketball with them. She was on a bowling league until she was 92 years young. Following basketball through her granddaughters, she became known affectionately as "Grandma Basketball." Edna took pleasure and pride in seeing her children and grandchildren achieve their goals and follow their dreams and was an incredibly supportive mother and grandma to all.

    Throughout her life, Edna could be found at a bridge table, a pastime she pursued until the end with her bridge partner and friend, Millie. She has many special friends at "Kroll's West," "The Stick," "Van Boxel's," and "The Stein."


    Survivors include her three sons, Thomas (Muriel) Van Beek, Waukesha, James Van Beek, Milwaukee, and Larry (Dianne) Van Beek, Green Bay; two daughters, Carol Ebel and Mary (Tom "Tiger") Atkinson, Jr., all of Green Bay; six grandchildren, Dr. Jeffrey Van Beek, Brookfield, David Van Beek, Chicago, Carol Ann (Chad) O'Leary, Green Bay, Thomas ("Tommy") (Tanya) Atkinson, III, Suamico, Michelle Ebel (special friend, Bryan Smith), Milwaukee, and Trisha Ebel, Green Bay. In recent years, Edna was proud of her two great-granddaughters ("little dumplings"), Marissa and Makenzie O'Leary. She also will be missed by her many nieces and nephews.

    Edna was preceded in death by her parents; an infant son, Billy; her brothers and sisters, Mina Greenwood, Alta Tweet, Austin Connelly, Almira Rose, Elmer Connelly, Wallace Connelly, Leslie Connelly, Erna Barth, Edward Connelly and Appolonia Tuyls.

    Friends may call at Blaney Funeral Home, 1521 Shawano Ave., from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, April 2. There will be a Parish Wake Service at 7 p.m. Friday. Friends may also call at the funeral home from 9 to 10 a.m. Saturday. The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 3, at St. Patrick Catholic Church, 211 N. Maple Ave. Burial will be in Allouez Catholic Cemetery, Allouez.

  • Note: Green Bay - Carol A. (Van Beek) Ebel, 71, Green Bay passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, December 10, 2017 surrounded by her loving family after a courageous 20-month battle with pancreatic cancer. She was born December 22, 1945, in Green Bay to Clifford and Edna (Connelly) Van Beek.

    Carol graduated from St. Patrick School in 1960, St. Joseph Academy in 1964, and Arizona State University in 1968 where she played on the women's basketball and golf teams. She taught physical education and health for the Milwaukee Public Schools for eight years before moving back to Green Bay in 1976 to marry Michael Ebel and start a family.

    After returning to Green Bay, she taught at St. Joseph Academy for a few years before teaching elementary physical education for the Green Bay Public Schools until her retirement in 2008. Carol was an extremely supportive, selfless, and loving mother who was very proud of her daughters. She enjoyed spending many years traveling around the country to support her daughter's love of basketball.

    She was a lifelong Packer's fan who first started attending games as a little girl with her dad at City Stadium located at East High School, a tradition she continued with her family. She was proud to be in attendance at the Ice Bowl. Carol was an avid golfer from a young age, winning many awards and accolades. She enjoyed many years of boating, spending time with family and friends, and most recently doting on her three grandchildren.

    Carol is survived by her daughters: Michelle (Bryan) Smith, Whitefish Bay, WI and Trisha (Heather), Green Bay; grandsons, Quinn and Collin Smith; and granddaughter, Avedah Ebel. She is further survived by two brothers: Larry (Dr. Dianne, Ph.D.) Van Beek, Punta Gorda, FL; Jim Van Beek, Milwaukee; brother-in-law, Thomas Jr. "Tiger" Atkinson, Suamico; sister-in-law, Muriel Van Beek, Waukesha; nieces and nephews: Carol Ann (Chad) O'Leary, Suamico; Thomas III (Tanya) Atkinson, Suamico; Dr. Jeffrey, M.D. (Tracey) Van Beek, Delafield, WI; David Van Beek, Winter Park, CO; special cousin, Donna Johnson, Scottsdale, AZ; along with great nieces and nephews and many other cousins whom she loved dearly.

    She was preceded in death by her parents; infant brother, Billy Van Beek; brother, Thomas Van Beek, and her sister and lifelong best friend, Mary Atkinson.

    Friends may call at Blaney Funeral Home, 1521 Shawano Ave., from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, December 15.
