    DIED

At Chilton, On Tuesday the 9th inst., of failure of the digestive powers, DENNIS CONNELLY, aged 77 years.

The deceased was a native of the Parish of Lisanuffy, Co. Roscommon, Ireland. He came to this country in 1847 and was a resident of East Greenwich, in Rhode Island, for four years but finally moved to this county and settled at Stony Brook.

Since his residence here his course of life has been so upright and honorable that he hadn't an enemy in the world but was regarded as an honest man, a true Christian and genuine friend by all who knew him as well as one of the most accommodating and unselfish men in the community. The close of his long and well spent life was peaceful and happy, his bedside being surrounded by the faithful and untiring wife and other relatives, he willingly allowed the spirit to depart from the earthly tenement and return to the God who gave it. His many kind acts will long be remembered, while the results of his virtuous and truly Christian life and example will never pass away. A good man has fallen and our citizens deeply mourn his departure and sympathize with the bereft family. Over sixty teams were in the funeral procession.
  • Immigration: He immigrated in 1847.

Died – Departed this life, with her peace fully made with her Maker, at the residence of Mrs. Mary Callaghan, in this city, Mrs. Winifred Connelly, nee Nolan, relict of Dennis Connelly, Esq., at the ripe age of 80 years.

The deceased was born in the parish of Lisanuffy, Co. Roscommon, Ireland. Emigrated with her husband and family to the United States in 1847, and resided in Rhode Island until 1852 when she became one of Calumet's pioneers at Stony Brook near what is now the City of Chilton, where she and the other hospitable inhabitants of Strokestown colony cast anchor.
As an active worker in the hive of human industry and a general reliever of all ills to which flesh is heir too, old lady Connelly had few equals and no superiors in our primitive days, and so well discharged the duties of every department of life that her visits were as welcome as the grace of God and she was entertained as an angel might be, coming unawares—always welcome.

She died as she lived, a model Christian, and with an unswerving faith in the belief of her fathers, and a mind as clear as the springs of the Emerald Isle, and when she reviewed her peaceful countenance in the calm repose of Death we could not help thinking of the widowed woman of whom the Saviour remarked "she is not dead, but sleepeth."

Let all so form our action in life that when the grim monster approaches we can cheerfully exclaim, "Oh Death where is thy sting, or grave thy victory.
  • Immigration: She immigrated in 1847.

FATAL ACCIDENT – We are again called upon to record an accident of a fatal nature, which took place on Monday night the 1st inst., by which James Callaghan, of this town was deprived of life. As we gleaned the fats they are as follows:
On Monday the deceased and other attended a "sowing bee" at his brother-in-law's—Patrick Mortal's—and arrived with his brother and cousin in this village late in the evening. About nine o'clock the three teams started for Stony Brook, the team of the deceased taking the lead. He was seated on somo marsh hay, on a rack, sitting near the horses as the lines were short. Owing to a sudden jolt when passing through a ravine he slipped off the rack and, the horses becoming frightened it seems that the wagon was overturned, and the deceased received internal injuries of which he died next morning. When first discovered he was hailed by his brother who found him lying near the hay, the horses and upturned wagon being a few rods further on, and his reply was "I am killed. " He was taken home and medical assistance called, but he was beyond human aid.
James Callaghan was a native of the Parish of Drumin, Co. Limerick, Ireland. He came to this country in 1849, landed at Boston and resided in Massachusetts five years, when he removed to Calumet County, which he selected for a permanent home. All who knew him will corroborate our statement when we say he was an honest and industrious man, as well as a social and obliging neighbor. His age was 44 years.
