    1-18-29

Frank M. Charlesworth, Sr., 70 years of age, prominent local resident for the past forty-eight years, one time mayor of the city of Kaukauna and the first city clerk of Kaukauna, died at the St. Elizabeth's hospital Wednesday afternoon at 4 o'clock, following an attack of appendicitis. He had been actively engaged in his daily routine of work up to last Saturday, when he was removed to the hospital.

Funeral services are being held here this (Friday) afternoon, with services at the house at 611 Wisconsin avenue at 2 o'clock, under the direction of the local Masonic lodge and Rev. Roscoe A. Barnes, pastor of the Brokaw Memorial Methodist Episcopal church. Interment will be in a vault in the Riverside cemetery at Appleton where it will remain until spring. At that time the body will be removed to Omro, Mr. Charlesworth's birthplace, where it will be interred to the Omro cemetery.

Pallbearers are Ben G. Prugh, R. M. Radsch, William F. Ashe, H.L. Donohue, Jos. Wittmann, Dr. C. D. Boyd, R. M. Kanfk and John McNaughton.

The late Mr. Charlesworth was born at Omro, May 6, 1858, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Mapuing Charlesworth. In 1880 he came to Kaukauna, opening a drug store in what was then known as Ledyard, on the site now occupied by the First National bank. Forty-four years ago he married Miss Frances Walsh of Sheboygan Falls, at Sheboygan. He continued in business at the Second street site until the late 1890's, when the Charlesworth family moved to the southern part of the United States, selling the store to Dr. H. B. Tanner.

Upon his return to Kaukauna, Mr. Charlesworth purchased the Kellogg drug store on Wisconsin avenue and then repurchased the store on Second street from Dr. Tanner. About twelve years ago he sold the south side establishment to Otto Look, and the north side store to H. G. Brauer.

Always active in civic affairs and in municipal politics, Mr. Charlesworth held the distinction of being the first postmaster in what was then known as Ledyard, and of being the first city clerk of the city of Kaukauna immediately following its incorporation in 1885.

In 1899 he was elected mayor of the city, and served one term, but he held an alderman's office here for a number of years. For almost twenty years, up to last summer, Mr. Charlesworth had been a state oil inspector, resigning that position to become vice president and assistant manager at the Moloch Foundry and Machine company. He played an active part in the reorganization of the local plant a year ago.

He was a member of the local Elks, Masonic and Modern Woodmen of America lodges.

Survivors are his widow; two sons, Frank M. Charlesworth Jr., and Guy R. Charlesworth, both of this city and three grandchildren.
