  • Death: Michael Rath died on May 16, 1918, at age 49, in Freedom, Outagamie Co, Wisconsin.
  • Note: Michael Rath, son of Valentin Rath and Anna Maria Fesser Rath, was born in Sheboygan, Wisconsin on September 23, 1868. He married Regina Leicht about 1896. From their union came 7 children: Eleanor, Valentine, Marie, Salome, Jerome, Celestine and Hilary.

Michael was a brick mason who died doing what he loved: building God's house. Michael Rath died while working near the top of the steeple of the almost-completed St. Nicholas Church in Freedom, Outagamie County, Wisconsin. According to local newspaper accounts at the time, a severe spring storm, packing high winds, rolled through Freedom about 3 pm that day. The winds ripped apart arched steel trusses atop the steeple, collapsing scaffolding on which Rath stood, sending the veteran church builder plummeting down the shaft of the steeple. The steeple itself fell, crashing into the church and burying Rath under a mountain of debris where his body remained hidden for several hours. Parishioners had laid the cornerstone to their new church barely a month before.

On May 15th, 95 years after his death, a plaque was blessed in Michael Rath's honor at St. Nicholas Catholic Church in Freedom, Wisconsin. The plaque reads: "In Memory ... Michael Rath of Two Rivers, Wisconsin, fell from the steeple and died in a construction accident while working on St. Nicholas Church May 16, 1918. He left a widow, Regina, and seven children, Eleanor, Valentine, Marie, Salome, Jerome, Celestine and Hilary. Please remember him in your prayers. "
It was erected by his grandchildren on May 15, 2013.

Rath's death is memorialized on the bronze plaque donated by his grandchildren to St. Nicholas. Monsignor VandenHogen said during the blessing, "Michael gave his life building this beautiful house of God, St. Nicholas Church. May Michael, who sacrificed his life doing what he loved best, rest from his labor of love in the dwelling place of God."
