  • Note: Menasha, Wis., Sept. 21 - Herbert, aged twelve, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Sauter, died Saturday of brian fever at the family home on Tayco street. The little fellow had been ill but two days. He attended school on Wednesday. The funeral will be held from St. Mary's church tomorrow morning at 9 o'clock, Rev. Father Schmitz officiating.

  • Note: Earl Sauter, 49, former tavern keeper and grocer, died unexpectedly at his home about 11:45 Tuesday evening. Sauter was born Sept. 27 1900 in Neenah. He lived until 1945 in Menasha when he moved to Appleton. He operated Earl's tavern for four years and the Morrison tavern for a year. In 1949 he went to Wrightstown where he spent a year in the grocery business. For the last six weeks he had been a salesman for Mrs. Drenk's Foods.

    Survivors are the widow and a son, Thomas, Appleton. Friends may call at the Wichmann Funeral home after 2 o'clock Thursday afternoon. The rosary will be recited at 7:30 Thursday evening. Services will be at the funeral home at 10 o'clock Friday morning and burial will be in Appleton Highland Memorial Park.

  • Note: Joe Bartlein, 89, a former Shawano, Wis. resident, died last Thursday at his home in Portland, Ore., it was learned here today. Bartlein, who came to Shawano in 1888, operated the old Farmers Home Hotel, located on the present site of the county welfare office. He moved to Portland in 1907.

    He is survived by seven children; Alois of Shawano, Matt of Portland, Anthony of New York, and George, Otillia (Mrs. Harry Madison), Elizabeth, and Amanda, all of California.

  • Note: Mrs. Louise Arno, 81, former Menasha resident, died early this morning at a Kenosha hospital. She was born May 4, 1870, in the town of Harrison and was married to Henry Arno at St. Mary's church in Menasha on Oct. 3, 1898. The lived in Menasha and later operated a hotel at Shawano. After Mr. Arno's death in 1930, Mrs. Arno returned to Menasha and went to Kenosha in 1948 where she lived at the Carmelite sisters home.

    Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Alois Horn of Kenosha and Juanita Marie Arno of Tucson, Ariz.; one son, Roy of Eden Valley, Minn.; one sister, Mrs. George Wilz, Menasha, and three grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Wednesday morning at St. Mary's church.

  • Death: He died on February 24, 1930, at age ~60, in Appleton, Outagamie Co, Wisconsin.
  • Burial: He was buried in St Mary Cemetery, Menasha, Wisconsin.
  • Note: Henry M. Arno, 60 of Shawano, formerly of Menasha, died Monday in Appleton. He had undergone an operation for appendicities. He was born in Milwaukee and had made his home in Shawano for the last three years.

    He is survived by his father, Martin Arno, Berlin; his wife; two daughters, Julia Arno, Milwaukee, and Mrs. E. J. Siefert, Oshkosh; one son, Roy Arno, Shawano; brother, Hugo Arno, Menasha; and two sisters, Mrs. H. J. Hange, Chicago, and Mrs. Frank Mayer, Berlin.

    Funeral services will be held at 9:30 Wednesday morning at St. Mary's Church with burial at St. Mary's cemetery.

Margaret Bartlein

  • Birth: Margaret Bartlein was born on February 15, 1873 in Town of Harrison, Calumet Co, Wisconsin.
  • Marriage: She and John A Lieg were married.
  • Death: Margaret Bartlein died on February 21, 1937, at age 64, in Shawano, Shawano Co, Wisconsin.
  • Note: Mrs. Margaret Bartlein Lieg passed away at her home in this city early Sunday morning. She had not been in good health for the past two years, but was well enough to go to her physician's office Saturday morning.

    Mrs. Lieg was born in the town of Harrison, Calumet county, February 15, 1874, and lived there until she was a young lady. On June 25, 1915, she was married to J. A. Lieg, who preceded her in death on January 6 of this year. She was an active member of the Missionary society of the Sacred Heart church and was well liked by her many friends in the city.

    She leaves one brother, Andrew Bartlein, of Harrison, Calumet county, and three sisters, Mrs. L. Arno of this city, Mrs. Anne Eckrich of Menasha, and Mrs. George Wilz of the town of Menasha. There also are two step-sons, John and Bernard Lieg, and one daughter, Mildred.

    Funeral services were held at the Scared Heart church Wednesday morning, the Rev. Fr. Theodore Kersten officiating at High Mass. Pallbearers were members of the Catholic Knights.

John A Lieg

  • Marriage: He and Margaret Bartlein were married.
  • Death: John A Lieg died on January 5, 1937, at age 69, in Shawano, Shawano Co, Wisconsin.
  • Note: J. A. Lieg, 69, prominent Shawano businessman for more than 40 years, passed away quietly at his home at 6:30 a.m. today. He had been in poor health for several years, and during most of the past year had been confined to a wheel chair. Funeral services will be held Friday morning at 9:00 a.m. at the Sacred Heart cemetery, with the Rev. Father Theodore Kersten officiating. Interment will be made at the Sacred Heart cemetery. The body will remain at the Manning Funeral home until the funeral.

    John Lieg was born March 11, 1867 at Green Bay, the son of Anton Lieg. He came to Shawano with his father when he was four years of age, and after completing his schooling here, went into business with his father. The Lieg store at that time was located where the Schumacher Furniture store has its present quarters. In August, 1895, the elder Lieg died and after the re-organization of the store, the enterprise became known as J. A. Lieg and Company store. Later the Lieg store occupied the buliding now used by the Muehl Furniture store.

    In 1903 John Lieg was married to Miss Mary Reiss of Ludington, Michigan. One daughter and two sons were born to the couple. They are Mildred, John, and Bernard Ten years later Mary Reiss Lieg passed away. Several years later John was married to Miss Margaret Bartlein of Chicago, and the couple moved to Shawano, where they have lived since that time.

    Mr. Lieg was prominent in many community enterprises, and served as a member of the city council for two terms. He was elected mayor in 1908 and 1909, and during his administration many improvements were added to the city. He was one of the first members of the water and light commission.

    Surviving Mr. Lieg are his daughter, Mildred Lieg Theile, of Grand Rapids, Mich; two sons, John and Bernard, of this city; a sister, Mrs. John Callahan, of this city; and Frank Lieg, a brother, of Milwaukee.

Andrew Bartlein

  • Note: Andrew Bartlein, 64, lifelong resident of the town of Harrison, Calumet county, died Thursday evening at 8 o'clock at St. Elizabeth's hospital in Appleton as the result of injuries sustained Thursday afternoon in Appleton when the automobile he was driving was struck broadside by a passenger train at the Appleton street crossing as the train was drawing into the station. His car was pushed 187 feet and was demolished.

    Mr. Bartlein was born Dec. 18, 1876 in the town of Harrison and was one of the leading farmers of the rural section east of Menasha. Survivors are his wife; one daughter, Renona Bartlein, Milwaukee; two sons, Ronald Bartlein, at home; and Russell Bartlein, Webster, Wis; three sisters, Mrs. Anna Eckrich, Menasha; Mrs. Louise Arno, Oshkosh; and Mrs. George Wilz, Route 1, Menasha; and four grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Monday morning at 9:30 at the residence in the town of Harrison; and at 10 o'clock at St. Mary's Catholic church with Rev. Msgr. John Hummel officiating. Interment will be in St. Mary's cemetery. Friends my call at the residence Saturday afternoon and until the time of the service.

    Survivors are her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Bartlein, Rt. 1, Menasha, a brother, John; grandparents Mrs. Susan Hughes, Appleton and Mrs. Mabel Bartlein, Cleveland, Ohio. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary's Catholic church, Menasha with burial in St. Mary's cemetery. Friends may call at the Brettschneider Funeral Home after 4 p.m. Wednesday.

  • Burial: He was buried in Oak Hill Cemetery, Neenah, Wisconsin.
  • Note: Russell G. Bartlein, age 54, passed away unexpectedly Saturday evening. He was born August 12, 1908 in Calumet County, and has been a resident of the Neenah area for the past 14 years. He was employed at the Galloway Company.

    Mr. Bartlein is survived by his wife, Marion; his mother, Mrs. Andrew Bartlein; three daughters, Barbara, Calif.; Bonnie and Betty, at home; four sons, Bernard, U.S.A.F., Japan; Bruce, Calif.; Bennett, Oklahoma; Bradford, at home; one brother, Ronald, Menasha; one sister, Renona, Cleveland, Ohio; 5 grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Westgor Funeral Home, Neenah with Rev. Bryce G. Armstrong officiating. Interment will be in Oakhill Cemetery. Marion I Ellerman

  • Marriage: She and Russell G Bartlein were married in 1935 in Bessemer, Gogebic Co, Michigan.
  • Death: Marion I Ellerman died on February 25, 1995, at age 83, in Neenah, Winnebago Co, Wisconsin.
  • Note: Marion I. Bartlein, age 83, died Saturday morning February 25, 1995 at her home after a courgeous battle againest cancer. She was born April 24, 1911 in Star Lake, Wisconsin, daughter of the late Edward and Hawkie (Taminga) Ellerman. She was educated at Saynor Elementary School and Eagle River High School. She was married to Russell Bartlein in 1935 in Bessemer, Michigan. Marion had lived in the area for the past 45 years. She was a member of the Faith United Methodist Church, Neenah and was formerly employed as a cook at The Poinsettia Tea Room and the Oshkosh Power Boat Club.

    She is survived by two daughters: Barbara Arndt, Menasha; and Bonnie Bartlein, Neenah; three sons: Bruce (Shirley), Menasha; Bennett (Kelli), Racine; Bradford (Victoria), Greenville; a sister, Grace Radant, Milwaukee; 16 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Russell; a daughter, Betty; a son, Bernard; five sisters: Edith, Gert, Carolyne, Ruth, Ginny, and Doris; three brothers: Lawrence, Francis, and Art. A memorial service will be held Saturday, March 4, 1995 at 11 a.m. from Faith United Methodist Church, Neenah with the Rev. R. A. Pegram officiating. Inurnment will be in Oak Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established for the N-M V.N.A. Hospice Program or Faith United Methodist Church.

Ramona Ethel Bartlein

  • Burial: She was buried in Oak Hill Cemetery, Neenah, Wisconsin.
  • Note: Age 72, died Tuesday, July 29, 1986, at St. Elizabeth Hospital, after a lingering illness. She was born October 19, 1913, in the Town of Harrison. She worked at Central National Bank, Cleveland, Ohio, for many years, retiring in 1979. She was a graduate of Lawrence University, a member of St. Theresa Catholic Church, Appleton, and a member of the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority.

    Survivors include a sister-in-law, Mrs. Marion Bartlein, Neenah; nieces; and nephews. There will be no visitation. A memorial mass will be held Friday, August 1 at 2 p.m. at St. Theresa Catholic Church with Father Dan Gilsdorf officiating. A memorial fund has been established. Memorials may be sent to Laemmrich Funeral Home, Menasha.

Henry J C Rosenow

  • Birth: Henry J C Rosenow was born on December 7, 1897 in Menasha, Winnebago Co, Wisconsin.
  • Death: He died on November 2, 1968, at age 70, in Menasha, Winnebago Co, Wisconsin.
  • Burial: He was buried in St Mary Cemetery, Menasha, Wisconsin.
  • Note: Henry J. Rosenow, 70, Menasha, died unexpectedly at 11 a.m. Saturday. Born Dec. 7, 1897, in Menasha, Mr. Rosenow was a life resident of the city. He graduated from Menasha High School and had recently retired as president of the Rosenow Paper Company, which he founded in 1934. Mr. Rosenow was a charter member of Butte des Morts Country Club, Neenah-Menasha Elks Club, and Menasha Rotary Club. He had served on the Menasha Park and Recreation Board for several years.

    Surviving in addition to the widow, Lucille, are two daughters, Mrs. James Rogers, Racine, and Mrs. Thomas Kuether, Menasha; one brother, George Rosenow, Neenah; four sisters, Mrs. Albert Angermeyer, Mrs. Frank Reidhauser and Mrs. Sarah Chapleau, all of Neenah, and Mrs. Paul Laemmrich, Menasha, and 10 grandchildren.

    Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Laemmrich Funeral Home, Menasha, and at 10:30 at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Menasha. The Rev. Lambert Scanlon will officiate. Interment will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Menasha. Friends may call from 4 to 9 o'clock this evening at the funeral home, where the rosery will be prayed at 8 p.m.

  • Note: Age 74, died Wednesday evening at St. Elizabeth Hospital following a lingering illness. She was born June 18, 1907 in Menasha where she had been a life resident. Mrs. Bartlein was a member of the Menasha Golden Agers Club, and Advocap, Menasha.

    Survivors include a daughter: Mrs. Jackie Wurdinger, Kaukauna; a son: Sam, Menasha; five grandchildren: Laurie, Samantha, Stephie, Vickie, & Jason; and a great-granddaughter: Dawn. She was preceded in death by her husband Lester in 1971.

    Services will be Saturday 9:30 a.m. at the Laemmrich Funeral Home and 10:00 at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Menasha with Rev. Norman Fontaine officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. There will be an 8 p.m. prayer service. A memorial has been established.
