  • Note: STURTEVANT – John F. Ayers, 74, formally of Appleton, passed away Wednesday, April 9, 2008 at Wheaton Franciscan Hospital in Racine, Wisconsin after a short battle of pancreatic cancer. John was born in Appleton, on May 31, 1933, son of the late Aloysius and Lyla (nee: Zimmerman) Ayers. On February 9, 1953, he married the former Lois Ader of Oshkosh, while stationed with the United States Air Force in London, England; she survives. He attended grade school at St. Therese School and graduated from Appleton High School in 1951. After graduation he entered the United States Air Force (1951-1955), returned to Appleton and owned his own insurance business. He was very active in the Appleton Jaycees (president in 1962) and was instrumental in starting the Soap Box Derby in Appleton. John also was an Alderman for the City of Appleton for six years in the 1960's. In 1967 John sold his insurance agency to begin a new venture in the water conditioning business. They moved to Kalamazoo, Mich. in 1970 where he ran his own water conditioning business. John then left his dealership and went to work for Rain Soft as a District Manager, covering five States. In 1976 they moved to St. Charles, Mo. where he was a regional manager. In 1980 they moved to Sturtevant where he retired from R.L. Polk in May, 1995. John and his son, Steve, were very avid model train collectors. (John followed in his father's footsteps as a model railroad enthusiast, his father was one of the original founders of the Paper Valley Model Railroad Club which was formed in the late 1940's.) John is survived by his wife of 54 years, Lois, and son, Steven, Sturtevant; his sisters, Nancy Stuyvenberg of Kimberly; Patricia (Martin) Vander Wielen of Neenah; brother, James (Nan) Ayers of Minneapolis, Minn.; his mother-in-law, Vera Eder of Oshkosh; and sister-in-law, Sandra ( Jim ) Gearhart of Gwinn, Mich. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles. John was preceded in death by his parents, Al and Lyla Ayers; father-in-law, Louis Eder; and brother-in-law, Paul Stuyvenberg. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Sebastian Catholic Church, 3100 95th Street, Sturtevant, WI, Tuesday, April 15, 2008, 11 a.m. with Rev. Mark Molling officiating. Relatives and friends may meet with the family at the church on Tuesday from 10 a.m. until time of Mass. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the family for a memorial fund to be established have been suggested. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.
