    Burned to Death
Father Vanderpoel, an ex-Catholic priest residing at L'Erable, is well known throughout that section. He was a Hollander, nearly 70 years of age, of dissipated habits and eccentric disposition. He lived alone in a large frame residence. About 9 o'clock last week Wednesday evening a tremendous explosion occured in his house which was heard a mile and a half distant. The neightbors rushed out and found the house on fire and enveloped in smoke. Some of them dashed into the house and found Father Vanderpoel on the floor covered with fire. He was taken out insensible, but recovered consciousness and told how a section of the plastering had fallen on the lamp and caused the explosion. The neighbors say, however, that they plainly smelled powder when they went into the building, and attribute the explosion to something besides a kerosene lamp. Father Vanderpoel was terribly burned and died the next morning. He has two brothers in New York who are priests. They were telegraphed for and came on to settle up his affairs. The house burned to the ground with all its contents, inflicting a loss of $800 -- perhaps more, as it is said the old gentelman had a $200 gold watch which he always wore. An empty house belonging to a Mr. Adams also burned; loss $200. John Barland's house and general store next went down. The stock and household furniture were all saved; loss on building, $1000. A house, worth $500 belonging to a Mr. Labounty, was also destroyed; contents saved. There was no insurance on any of the property.
The Kankakee Gazette, Kankakee, Illinois, issue of Thursday, 6 December 1888.

    St. Patrick, Arcola, Indiana:
St. Patrick Parish dates back to 1845, when then-vicar general of the Fort Wayne diocese, Msgr. Julian Benoit, began holding services for area Catholics in the home of Victor Munier. This continued for many years until the parish was officially established in 1862 and placed under the care of Father P.J. Jadden, its first pastor. Father Henry Schafer and Father Theodore Van Der Poel followed in quick succession. Then parishioners build the first church and priest’s residence on the grounds in 1868, and established nearby Calvary Cemetery that same year.

Brinfield, Peoria Co, Illinois. " In 1864, Rev. Theodore Vanderpoel attending, and additon 22x36 was built."
  • Immigration: He immigrated to America in 1848 Line 33.
