Eva Margaret Caroline Kersten

  • Note: New Holstein – Mrs. Eva Kersten Milhaupt, wife of a former postmaster of this city, passed away at 7:35 a.m. Monday at the home of her son, George, in Kenosha, according to word received here Monday. Several months ago Mrs. Milhaupt fractured her hip in a fall and had been confined to her son’s home since then.

    The deceased was born in Green Bay, May 20, 1858, a daughter of Theodore and Mary Magdalene Kersten. When a child the family moved to Chilton, where she was united in marriage to William Milhaupt of this city. Her husband passed away March 29, 1938, in this city and since that time she has made her home with her son, Arno, until his death, Sept. 7, 1938, when she went to Kenosha.

    Survivors are three children, George, Kenosha, Mrs. W. H. Hunt, River Falls, and Mrs. Riley Stone, Portage; 11 grandchildren; two sisters, Miss Gertrude Kersten, and Mrs. J. M. Arnoldy, both of Alhambra, Cal.; a brother, Jacob, Green Bay.

    She was a charter member of the Holy Rosary parish here, a member of the Christian Mothers Society of the Holy Rosary church, a member of the Pastime club and was also a member of the Happy Guild society of Gesu church Milwaukee.
    Funeral services were held at the Holy Rosary church here with interment in St. Mary’s cemetery, Chilton.

William Milhaupt

    New Holstein – the funeral of William Milhaupt, who passed away Thursday morning March 29, at the age of 70, was held this morning at the family residence and later at Holy Rosary Church, the Rev. Fr. Joseph Glueckstein conducting the services. Burial was in St. Mary's cemetery at Chilton
    The deceased was born July 10, 1858 at Milwaukee, and when a small child moved with his parents to St. Nazianz. At the age of 15 he left his home to learn the blacksmith's trade. After serving his apprenticeship, he conducted a shop and continued to reside for more than 50 years. For many years he conducted a blacksmith shop on the site now occupied by the J. Luebbe residence.
    In 1882 he was united in marriage to Miss Eva Kersen of Chilton who, with four children survive. The children are Mrs. W. H. (Hattie) Hunt of River Falls; Mrs. Riley (Vera) Stone of Reedsburg, George Milhaupt of Kenosha, and Arno Milhaupt of New Holstein. One daughter, Rachael, died in infancy. One brother, Conrad Milhaupt of Appleton, one half-brother, Herman Meyer of Marshfield and a half-sister, Mrs. Joseph Geigel of Manitowoc survive.
    Mr. Milhaupt was a charter member of the Modern Woodmen of America. For 24 years he served as postmaster at New Holstein.

V. I. as corporal, was killed in 1863, the family moved to Manitowoc County in 1864, locating at St. Nazianz" –from History of Northern Wisconsin, p. 182 –on July 5, 1864, Magdalena re-married to Heinrich Meyer [Meier] of the Town of New Holstein, Calumet County –they were married in a civil ceremony in Milwaukee [it seems this marriage soon dissolved and Magdalena continued to use the last name of Muehlhaupt] –daughter of John Bachmann and Magdalena Heice –born Dettinghofen, Baden –Magdalena had 6 children from 4 fathers –the eldest child, Leander Bachmann, was born Feb. 24, 1850 at Berwangen, Waldshut, Baden to an unknown father –Leander remained in Baden, not coming to America until 1868 –he then settled in Rochester, New York where he married and raised a family –Magdalena then married August Muehlhaupt about 1855 in either Germany or America –their son William Muehlhaupt was born in Milwaukee on July 10, 1856 –son August was born about 1856 and son Conrad about 1862, both in Milwaukee –her husband August Muehlhaupt then enlisted in the Union army on August 18, 1862 He attained the rank of corporal. He was wounded at the Battle of Chancellorsville on May 2, 1863. He was then taken to a hospital in Washington DC, where he died from his wounds on Jan. 1, 1864. He is buried at the Soldier's Home National Cemetery, Washington DC, Section A, Site 44 Magdalena then had a son named Herman Meyer, from her marriage to Heinrich Meyer –Herman was born on May 9, 1865 –Magdalena then had a daughter named Anna, born on Nov. 11, 1868 in St. Nazianz –she was a child of Magdalena and a widower from St. Nazianz named Jacob Frank –on Feb. 8, 1872, as a single woman, purchased the house at 102 South Fourth Avenue –Magdalena lived here until her death in 1903 –on Jan. 23, 1897, she sold this house to her son-in-law Joseph Geigel but continued to live at this residence) – 1-18-28 (no county death record.)

    The deceased was born in New Holstein on April 17, 1885, the son of Mr. and Mrs. William Milhaupt. He attended the New Holstein Public schools and the Kiel High school, graduating with the class of 1904.

    After graduation he accepted a position in Milwaukee, and on October 17, 1916 he was married to Miss Ione Loftus of this city. Mrs. Milhaupt was then a teacher in the Kiel public schools. For many years Mr. Milhaupt was employed in the offices of the Lauson Company, and of late had worked for the Langenfeld Company and the Shaver Service.

    He is survived by his widow; his mother, Mrs. William Milhaupt; a brother, George of Kenosha; two sisters, Mrs. Walter Hunt of River Falls and Mrs. Riley Stone of Reedsburg.

    Mr. Milhaupt was well-known in New Holstein, Kiel and all over this vicinity. He was prominent in civic and social life in his home town, and was loved and respected by all with whom he came in contact.
