Family: Robert Maves (b. June 4, 1918, d. May 11, 2002)

Biography

  • Death: Arlene Ballard died on April 19, 2016, at age 95.
  • Burial: She was buried in Riverside Cemetery, Appleton, Wisconsin.
  • Note: Arlene Maves, age 95, of Appleton, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 19, 2016, at Century Oaks Assisted Living. Arlene was born in Appleton on the Ballard Farm on December 19, 1920, to the late Jesse Earl and Nora (Krenkel) Ballard, in the house which still stands at 2407 N. Ballard Rd. Most of her life was lived within 3 or 4 miles of that house. Her father, Earl, was the administrator at the Riverside Cemetery for 42 years. Arlene, the eldest of her four sisters, known as the "beautiful Ballard girls" grew up there on Owaissa St. Their family was an early pioneer of 1st English Lutheran Church. She sang in the choir there with her beautiful soprano voice for many years, and met her husband Bob there as well, and the couple were united in marriage on November 8, 1941. The couple enjoyed 58 years together until Robert's passing in May of 2002. In addition to church Arlene was a member and officer of the Pythian Sisters and United Commercial Travelers (UCT). In the 50's and 60's, life on Prospect Ave. was filled with tons of fun thanks to wonderful relationships with great neighbors. In her middle years, Arlene worked at Lawrence University and at Appleton Extended Care. She loved baking, making great pastries, pies and the like for students and residents of the nursing home. Arlene and Bob bought a cottage on Upper Post Lake. They spent many wonderful days there along with family. This has become a remarkable investment for future generations. In her later years Arlene and Bob lived on Glendale Ave. Their next door neighbor was "the Good Neighbor", Kathy Keene from WHBY. Through a very close relationship with Kathy, mom got to be known as the good neighbor of the good neighbor. She was an avid fan of the Badgers, Brewers, and Packers, rarely missing a game on TV. In addition, she worked in the garden, watched "her story" - Days of Our Lives, visited with neighbors (like her next door neighbor, Millie), and dedicated her remaining years to family. Family meant so much to Grandma. Her fancy holiday dinners, Christmas cookies and candy, pearl necklaces for granddaughters, lemon drops and M&M candy were loved by everyone. All will be missed. Arlene never missed a chance to leave everyone she ran into with a simple couple of words, "Love ya."

In the 1950's Arlene, Bob, and two sons became customers at what is today Mark's Eastside Supper Club. She loved to go there for a martini and fish fry on Friday night. She remained a faithful patron for over 70 years. Arlene wants to thank every last person who works at Mark's but especially Mark Dougherty, the owner.

Arlene is survived by four sons: Terry (Mary) Maves, Appleton, and their children Tyler (Madhurii) Maves, JR. (Dan) Grawe, Gus (Lyndsey) Maves, Peter Maves, and Suzy (Eric) Mc Elrath; Tom (Lori) Maves, Appleton, and children Mackenzie and Krista Maves, Melissa (Joel) Torres, and Mike McNamara; David Maves, Appleton, and children Lyndsay (T.J.) Spillman and Bryan Maves; and Dennis (Jean) Maves, Appleton, and their children Lance (Lindsay), Mallory, William, and Cayle Maves; 9 greatgrandchildren: Skye and Griffin Maves, Leyla and Nolan Grawe, Breck Maves, Jackson and Tyler Spillman, and Trevor Maves; 4 sisters: Lavahn Miles, Nona Peterson, Jean Johnson, and Carol (Dolf) Pfefferkorn. She is further survived by many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, Arlene was preceded in death by 3 brothers-in-law: Sam Miles, Russell Peterson, Allen Johnson and sister-in-law: Marion (Earl) Arnold.

A funeral service will take place at 11:00 am on Saturday, April 23, at First English Lutheran Church, 326 E. North St., Appleton, with Rev. Mary Bauer officiating. Friends and relatives may visit on Friday at the Brettschneider-Trettin-Nickel Funeral Chapel from 4 to 7 pm, and directly at the church on Saturday from 9:30 am until the time of service. Interment will take place at Riverside Cemetery, Appleton. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at Century Oaks Assisted Living for the compassionate care shown to Arlene and to Ann Olson who helped Arlene with her health care in her later years.
