Family: John Leary

Biography

  • Birth: Jean M VanBeckum was born on July 9, 1945 in Wausau, Marathon Co, Wisconsin.
  • Death: She died on January 17, 2013, at age 67, in Alaska.
  • Note: Longtime Eagle River resident Jean M. Leary died Jan. 17, 2013 at her home in the South Fork Valley, where she had lived for 37 years. She was 66.

Her family said she had fought multiple sclerosis for 31 years. Her husband of 45 years, John, and her English Springer Spaniel, Mike, were with her when she died.

A memorial gathering will be held at a later date. She requested that her cremated remains be spread in her beloved Yukon, Canada, where she found friendship, peace and tranquility.

She was born July 9, 1945 in Wausau, Wisconsin. When she was a young girl her family moved to Stevens Point, where she attended local schools, graduating from Maria High in 1963. She went on to attend the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, where she met John, and the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where she received her BSN in 1967. That same year, she and John were married and made their first home in Mankato, Minn. Jean was a pediatric staff nurse at St. Joseph Hospital there until being hired as a public health nurse for Blue Earth County, where she worked until 1972 when she, John and their two Irish Setters moved to Alaska.

Upon arriving in Alaska, Jean was hired as a pediatric nurse at Providence Hospital, where she worked for five months until the Greater Anchorage Borough hired her as a PHN. Her first area was Mountain View/Government Hill, but by the mid 1970s Jean ran the Eagle River office in the Parkgate building. She conducted clinics and vaccine programs there, worked with the Chugiak-Eagle River Senior Center and made home visits from Eagle River to Eklutna. She especially enjoyed working with expectant and new mothers, infants and children.

Jean was affiliated with Alpha Phi Sorority, The National MS Society, UW Nurses Alumni Organization and The American Cancer Society. She received awards and certificates of appreciation from different organizations, but was most proud of those received from the Chugiak-Eagle River Senior Center.

“Though her professional career ended prematurely in 1995 because of physical and mental disabilities, she fought on relentlessly without complaining,” her family said. “With the assistance of friends and family she managed to travel by motorhome and boat, weather permitting. She was an avid fisher, hunter and gatherer when she was physically able. She loved camping, campfires, reading and her pets.”

She is survived by her husband, John Leary of Eagle River; mother, Lorraine Van Beckum of Wisconsin; sisters, Ann Tepp and Mary Tepp of Wisconsin and Linda Purnell of Minnesota.

She was preceded in death by her father, Joseph Van Beckum; father-in-law, Herbert Leary; and mother-in-law, Theresa Leary.

The family wishes to send a special thank you to Dr. Kenneth Pervier and his wife, Gay; home health nurses Pat, Arminda, Kathy, Sue, Lynne, Marilyn, Rick and especially Linda; home health aides, Julie, Cindi, Jenny, Iris, Donna and Mysteree, the PTs; and all the friends, family and neighbors who lent their support and helping hands.

Memorial donations may be made to Providence Hospice, 5435 E. Tudor Road, Anchorage.

Arrangements by Janssen’s Eagle River Funeral Home.

Biography

  • Birth: Carson James Ludka was born on November 30, 2015 in Neenah, Winnebago Co, Wisconsin.
  • Death: He died on March 18, 2016, at age 0.
  • Burial: He was buried in St Margaret Mary Cemetery, Neenah, Wisconsin.
  • Note: Ludka, Carson James

Carson, J. Ludka, 3 Months, Neenah, went to his heavenly home on Friday, March 18, 2016 with his parents by his side. He was born on November 30, 2015, in Neenah, son of Brian and Tracy (Gloudemans) Ludka.

Carson has made an everlasting impression on so many people in his short life. He has showed the world what strength and courage really is. He is a true hero by all definition. Carson loved his mommy and daddy, big brother, and all of his family and friends. We enjoyed holding him and telling him how perfect he was with his fuzzy wuzzy hair, big beautiful eyes, cute tootsies, soft and delicate skin, and unique personality. Carson seemed to have a special bond with his primary nurses - all of which loved him like he was their own son. Every night, he would fall asleep to his personal playlist of music which included several songs composed by his papa. He enjoyed rocking to sleep as his nana sang sweet lullabies. Carson loved his feet tickled just like daddy and his head caressed just like mommy. He enjoyed having his window shades opened in his room each night so that God could easily look upon him.

Carson is survived by his parents: Brian and Tracy; a brother: Foster Ludka; a maternal grandmother: Helen Gloudemans; paternal grandparents: Robert and Debbie Ludka; a paternal great grandmother: Gerri Carr; 3 aunts: Carrie (Ken) Larscheid, Christina (Josh) Ellerbrock, and Tammy (Bob) Burdick; 6 cousins: Finnegan, Tru, Gray, Clover, Cassidy, and Hailee; and many other relatives and friends.

Carson was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather: Ronald Gloudemans; maternal great grandparents: Dan and Mille Johnson; paternal great grandparents: Raymond and Julia Ludka and Charles Carr.

Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m., on Wednesday, March 23, 2016, at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church, 620 Division St., Neenah, with Fr. Michael Ingold officiating. Interment will be in St. Margaret Cemetery, Neenah. Visitation will be Wednesday at the church from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are appreciated in Carson's name.

"Carson, we are so proud to be your parents. You have given us so much love and happiness. God blessed us with such a beautiful soul and showed us what life and love is really about. Although our time with you was short here on Earth we will soon be united together forever in Heaven soon. Mommy, daddy, and your big brother Foster will always love you and you will always be in our hearts. God bless you Carson now and forever."

"Sometimes the smallest things take up the most room in your heart. Carson, you filled our hearts with love and we will always cherish the time we had with you. We will see you again in Heaven." Love, Nana and Papa Ludka

"Carson, your short life made such a difference, and now, in your honor, it is our turn to do the same." Love, Nana Gloudemans

We would like to say a special thanks to the medical team at Children's Hospital of Milwaukee and Fox Valley for the outstanding care you provided to our son. Karina, Sarah, Kaye, Kirsten, Kathy, and the rest of the amazing nurses - thank you and God bless you all.
