  • Note: Obit. De Pere Journal Democrat 2-3-1955 John C. Baeten, 58 route 3 Kaukauna, died at his home Friday afternoon after a heart attack . He had been in ill health the last five months. Born at Wrightstown Feb. 21, 1896, he was a life long resident of this area. He was employe d at the Thilmany Paper company at Kaukauna and at the Kimberly-Clark corporation at Kimberl y for the past 25 years. His wife the former Maria Vanderheiden, to whom he married in 1922 . A Veteran of World War I he was a member of the American Legion Post at Wrightstown. Survivors are three daughters, Mrs. Leroy Oakley of Kaukauna, Mrs. Jack Martzhal of route 3 K aukauna, Mrs. Robert Merkel of Milwaukee; six sons, Robert, John and James of Milwaukee; Marv in, Clayton of Kaukauna; Edward of route 3 Kaukauna; eight grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Jo seph Ley of De Pere and two brothers, Fred and Francis of route 3 Kaukauna. Funeral services were held at 9 o'clock Monday morning in St. Paul Catholic Church. Burial wa s in the church cemetery with the DeWane Funeral home in charge of arrangements. Military rites were conducted at the grave by the Urban Klister American Legion post. Colo r bearers were Clifford Beining and Larry Diny. The color guard were John Diny and Steve Riba rchek. Members of the firing squad were Donald and Art Meulemans, Luke Verbeten, Dick Wymelen berg, Robert Nackers and Jim Bungeon. Honorary pallbearers were Jack Gerondale, Jasper Lieber gen, Irvin Van Dyke, Gerald Emmett and Lloyd Berken and Ray Utke. Active pallbearers were Don ald and Joe Ley, Casmirir Galkowski and Lem, Melvin and H. Baeten.

    Leona H. Merkel, 69, of Atoka, retired sales associate from Sears, died Sunday at her home. Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Roller Family Funeral Home with burial in West Tennessee Veterans Cemetery. Mrs Merkel, the wife of Robert Fredrick Merkel, also leaves two daughters, Gail DeRuiter of Milwaukee and Linda Ervin of Atoka; two sons, James Merkel of Hernando and Robert Merkel of East Troy, Wis.; a siter, Rita Martzahl of Wrightstown, Wis.; four brothers, Clayton Baeten of Kaukauna, Wis.; James Baeten of Wrightstown, John Baeten of Oakfield, Wis.; and Marvin Baeten of Appleton, Wis.; and two grandchildren. The family requests that memorials be sent to the American Cancer Society.

    Age 53, died on Sunday, July 28, 2002 at her home. Judith was born on April 30, 1949, daughter of the late Howard and Mabel (Huss) Verbeten. She loved to spend time with her grandson Alex. Judith also enjoyed dancing and listening to music; especially Alabama, Kenny Rodgers and the Beach Boys. She is survived by her children, Amy (Christopher) Croatt; Mari Young; Michael Young; her sister, Patricia (Roger) Bowers, Sr.; her brothers, James (Leta) and Daniel (Margie) Verbeten; her grandson, Alex Croatt; her sister-in-law, Rosella Verbeten; and her former spouse, Gary Young. She is further survived by numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Judith was preceded in death by her grandparents, John (Julia) Verbeten and Michael (Mary) Huss. The Funeral Mass will be held at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 31, 2002, at ST. JOSEPH CATHOLIC CHURCH, 410 West Lawrence Street, Appleton, with Rev. Ken Reinhart, OFM Cap. officiating. The entombment will be held at Highland Memorial Park, Appleton. Friends will be received at the church on Wednesday from 3:00 p.m. until the time of service. Judith was a loving, caring woman who always had a smile on her face. She will be greatly missed by everyone who knew her.
