    Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Smits, 645 S. Michigan street, well known and highly respected pioneer residents of De Pere and vicinity, will observe the fiftieth anniversary of their marriage next Monday, having been united in wedlock in St. Mary's church by the late Rev. Father Van Grotel, on May 7, 1878. To observe the occasion, a mass of thanksgiving will be sung by Rev. Father Peters next Monday, during which the couple will renew their marital vows.

    On next Sunday, the golden wedding will be celebrated with a family reunion at the home of one of their daughters, Mrs. Frank Van Vonderen of Lawrence, where the children, grandchildren and other relatives will offer congratulations.

    Mr. Smits was born at Venraal, Holland, Jan. 28, 1849; his wife, former Gertrude Cuene, is eleven years his junior, having been born at Horst, Holland, April 16, 1860. They came to this country in 1869. After their marriage in 1878, they settled on a farm in Rockland, where they resided until 1919, when they retired from active life and moved into the city. Both Mr. and Mrs. Smits are hale and hearty and bid fair to live for many years to enjoy a well earned rest.

    Their union was blessed with thirteen children, nine of whom are living to enjoy the privilege of attending their parents' golden wedding. There are also 42 grandchildren. The children are: Anna (Mrs. F. Van Vonderen), Lawrence; Martin, De Pere; John, West De Pere; Frank, at home; Kate (Mrs. Jos. Oskens), Rockland; Sophie (Mrs. And. Terrien), Morrison; Sylvester, manager of the West De Pere branch of the State Bank of De Pere.

    Born Dec. 15, 1884 in the town of Rockland, she was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Smits. Her husband, the late Joseph Hoskens, died in 1934. He was one of the early breeders of registered Holstein cattle in Brown county.

    Survivors are four sons, Peter, Louis, Joseph and Edward, all of De Pere; five daughters, Sister M. Lucida, ND, of Chicago, Mrs. Robert Verboort of West De Pere, Mrs. John Schmidt of De Pere, Mrs. Gene Kieffer, Milwaukee, and Mrs. Thomas Rotzenberg, Hollandtown; 25 grandchildren; four brothers, Michael, John and S.W. Smits, all of De Pere, and Frank, Los Angeles, Calif., and one sister, Mrs. Andrew Terrien.

    The body is at the Ryan Funeral home but final arrangements are incomplete. Mrs. Hoskens was a member of the St. Mary Catholic parish and of the Confraternity of Christian Mothers."

    Funeral services were held Monday morning at St. Mary's Church for Henry J. Smits, 53, who died Friday morning at the Veteran's Home, Mendota, and interment was in Mt. Olivet cemetery. The body was brought to De Pere by the Schumerth Funeral home and remained at the home of a brother, Martin, 220 S. Ontario street until time for the funeral.

    Pallbearers were: John De Groot, Ervin Van Vonderen, Emil Van Vonderen, Louis Hoskens, Joseph Van Vonderen and Jerome Terrien, all nephews of the deceased.

    Full military honors were accorded the deceased, an American Legion squad firing the salute over the grave followed by a bugler blowing taps.

    Henry J. Smits was born in De Pere on Jan. 30, 1888, and spent his entire life here as a carpenter. He became ill over three years ago and has been at the Veteran's home since that time.

    Survivors include five brothers, Martin, De Pere; John, West De Pere; Frank, Oshkosh; Louis, De Pere; and Sylvester, West De Pere; and two sisters, Mrs. Joseph Hoskens and Mrs. Andrew Terrien, both of De Pere.

    De Pere Businessman Dies After Illness

    Sylvester Smits Prominent In Area Bowling Circles

    Sylvester W. Smits, 55, president of Ford's Purity Bakery, died at 7 o'clock Monday morning in a Green Bay hospital after a short illness.

    Born Dec. 6, 1896 in the town of De Pere, he was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Smits. A graduate of St. Norbert college, he was employed at the State Bank of De Pere until 1929 when he became associated with George P. Ford in the latter's bakery business at 522 George St. The firm was later incorporated and eight years ago he became president.

    A veteran of World War I, he was a charter member of Heesaker-Brown post, American Legion. He was a member of Columbus court No. 315, Catholic Order of Foresters, the Green Bay council No. 617, Knights of Columbus, the De Pere Chapter of St. Norbert Alumni assn., and the Holy Name Society of St. Boniface church.

    Prominent Bowler - Prominent in area bowling circles, Smits was a regular with the old National Band and Mc's Bakery teams in the Green Bay Majors of 20 years ago. He was on the five-man team from De Pere that established the all time high score of 2,999 pins for a Fox River Valley Forester tournament. In baseball, he played second base with the De Pere city team for many years.

    Survivors are his wife, the former Helen Van Dyke of Wrightstown to whom he was married in 1927; two daughters, Carol of Fon du Lac and Mary of Milwaukee; two sons, William and Robert at home; one sister, Mrs. Andrew Terrien of De Pere; and four brothers, John, Louis and Martin of De Pere and Frank of Fon du Lac.

    Funeral services were conducted at 9 o'clock Wednesday morning at St. Boniface church. Father Joseph Jansen was a celebrant of the Solemn Requiem High Mass. Father Francis B. McHugh, O. Praem., was deacon and Father Leo Schmitt was subdeacon. Pallbearers were Harry Danen, John, William and Norbert Daanen, John Cuene and Leo Janssen. The Ryan Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

    "The funeral of Miss Mary Smits, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Smits, who died last Thursday, was held from St. Mary Church on Monday morning. Interment was in Mt. Olivet cemetery. The pall bearers were six brothers of the deceased, Martin, John, Frank, Henry, Louis and Sylvester. Six young ladies of the Sodality of which she had been a member, acted as honorary pall bearers, namely, Misses Ella Danen, Stella Smits, Rose Broekman, Rose Janssen, Henrietta Vermeulen and Doris Janssen."

    Death of Loved Daughter
    Promising Young Lady Succumbs To Fatal Illness
    The loved daughter, Josephine Antoinette Smits, of Mr. and Mrs. Jac Smits of Rockland died Thursday evening at her home at the age of 16 years. Death came peacefully and found her resigned to her fate, consoled with all the graces of the Catholic church of which she was a faithful member.
    Deceased leaves to mourn her loss her parents, four sister and six brothers. They are (Anna) Mrs. F. Van Vonderen; (Katie) Mrs. Jos. Hoskens, Sophia and Mary at home; Martin and John of De Pere; Frank of Surprise, Neb.; Henry, Lewis and Sylvester at home.
    Funeral services will be held at St. Mary's church on Monday morning at nine o'clock. The pall bearers are the brothers mentioned above.
