  • Note: JEAN GUION, SIEUR DU BUISSON
ED. NOTE: THIS SHORT HISTORY IS AN EXTRACT FROM VOLUME 3 OF
THE “RED DRUIN” SET, KNOWN MORE FORMALLY AS THE
DICTIONNAIRE NATIONAL DES CANADIENS FRANÇAIS BY GABRIEL
    DROUIN.
It was in 1634 that the French emigration began, never to be interrupted.
Jean Guion was part of the first group brought from Perche by Robert
Giffard, first Seigneur of Beauport. He disembarked at Quebec on June 4,
1634. Jean Guion bore the title Sieur de Buisson. This was the name of the
fief he had received from his Seigneur. From the moment of his arrival in
the country, Jean Guion settled on his domain and began to clear the land
    with great energy.
Jean Guion was a mason by trade, but this did not prevent him from
cultivating his lands and acting as a notary. It was in this latter capacity
that he drew up the first marriage contract in the country, that of Robert
    Drouin… .
A fervent Catholic, Jean Guion, your ancestor, has his name linked with
diverse charitable works of an emerging Canada. In addition, he is seen also
as participating in all religious gatherings. Here is what the Jesuit Journals
have to say in a very interesting account concerning the order to be
followed during the Corpus Christi procession in 1646.
Since it seemed there were discussions from all ~ - sides, the writer
tells us: "Someone remembered that the honor of trades had to be
kept, even though our Liege brother suggested there was no point
in regarding honor. In other matters, the [participants] were to
agree among themselves, such as whether it was necessary for the
fathers to bring their children. In the end, the two oldest walked
first: that is, Zacharie Cloutier and Jean Guion."
This was perhaps the first official recognition of the right of
representation of a corps of trades in a public holiday in Quebec.
The order of the procession follows:
"Two bell-ringers marched in front, then the banner, whose bearer
wore a hat of flowers. The Cross followed, carried by a young man
of 20 years wearing an alb and a stole; on both sides, two children
in surplices and stoles. For the first time, there followed torches, six
in number. It had been determined that the carriers would
represent the tradesmen of the country, namely: carpenters,
masons, sailors, tool-makers, brewers and bakers; the torches were
sent to them the night before. The torches were of our
manufacture, made of our wax, and then decorated with ribbons.
Jean Guion, the mason, placed on his torch an escutcheon featuring
the tools of his trade: hammer, compass, and ruler ..."
On October 18, 1653, Jean Guion donated to the church of Saint-
Jean-de-Mortagne in Perche, for charitable purposes, a house and
garden, on condition that he and his wife be listed among the
    number of benefactors.
On July 30, 1646, your first ancestor visited the Seigneur of
Beauport, Robert Giffard. He went to the lordly residence to offer
fidelity and homage, in accordance with an ancient feudal custom
then in vogue, in gratitude for the fief of which he was the
    proprietor.
