  • Note: ARTS, John, MRS. (Obit) Monday evening at 5 o'clock occurred the death of Mrs. John Arts at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Peter Van Deneng of Freedom. The body arrived here early Wednesday morning and was taken to the home of her son, Cornelius Arts, where her remains laid until Thursday when the funeral was held at half past nine o'clock from St. Francis church of which she was a member. Deceased was born in Zeeland, Holland, September 7, 1818, and was consequently 87 years old at the time of her demise. At the age of 30 years she was married to John ARTS which union was blessed wtih eight children. A few years after her marriage together with husband and two children and a party of other colonists they came over from Europe and migrated to Wisconsin settling at what was then known as Franciscus Bosch, now Hollandtown. June 8, 1848. In December 1964 [1864], her husband died leaving six small children to the sole and tender care of a kind and loving mother. About two years after she was again married to George Peerenboom with whom she made her home at Little Chute and shortly after at Appleton. In May 1872, Mr. Peeremboom died, again leaving her a widow. Shortly after she removed to Holland where she had lived up to about three years ago when she went to live with her daughter at Freedom. She is survived by one son and five daughters namely: (Cornelia) Mrs. Peter Dietzler, at Cadott; (Hattie) Mrs. Peter Van Deneng at Freedom; (Hannah) Mrs. John Debruin, (Nellie) Mrs. John L. Debrin; (Mary) Mrs. Henry Van Vreede and Cornelius Arts at Holland. We have lost our darling mother, She has bid us all adieu; She has gone to live in Heaven, And her person is lost to view.     Kaukauna Soldier Dies in Action On Western Front

    Joseph Verhagen


    A Kaukauna soldier has been killed in action in Germany. Word was received Thursday that That Staff Sergeant Joseph Verhagen, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Verhagen, route 1, Kaukauna was killed in action in Germany December 6, 1944. Staff Sergeant Verhagen was a tank commander and has been in the service for three and one half years.

    He is survived by his parents, four brothers, Private First Class Earl Verhagen, stationed in Madison, Richard, Mark, Paul, and three sisters, Mary Jean, Leone and Ruth.

    Age 85, a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend passed away at her home on Thursday January 9, 2003 following a brief illness. Dory was born December 8, 1917 in Appleton the daughter of the late Frank and Rose (Ecker) Tank. She has resided in Appleton all of her life. Doris was united in marriage to Eugene Weiland on February 1, 1941, sharing 51 years together before his death on March 22, 1992. Doris was a life long member of Zion Lutheran Church and a volunteer at the Memorial Park Arboretum. She loved playing cards, music, reading, and a good Green Bay Packer game. Her most important processions were her family and dear friends. Dory will be deeply missed by her daughter Pam (Dan) Becker of West Lafayette, IN. daughter-in-law Jeanne Weiland of Appleton grandchildren Sarah (Raymond) Hestres of Appleton and Charlie Weiland of Middletown, PA great grandson Sidney Hestres and a soon to be born great granddaughter and her sister Dallas Thompson of Indianapolis, IN other relatives and dear friends. In addition to her parents and husband, Doris was preceded in death by a son Daniel Weiland on January 17, 2001.

    Funeral services will be held 11AM Tuesday January 14th at Zion Lutheran Church, 920 N. Morrison St., with Rev. Larry Matthews officiating. Burial will take place at Highland Memorial Park. Friends may call at the Brettschneider-Trettin-Lederer Funeral Chapel from 5-8PM Monday and then directly at the church from 10AM Tuesday until the time of the service.

    Memorial funds have been established for Zion Lutheran Church and the Memorial Park Arboretum.

    Age 67, died unexpectedly Saturday, September 30, 1989 at his sister's cottage on Richard Lake. He was born July 8, 1922 in Kaukauna, the son of the late Harry and Christine [Vanden Heuvel] Verhagen. Earl served with the U.S. Air Force during World War II. He was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus Council 1033, and the Lions Club. He was a very helpful and caring person.

    He is survived by two brothers and three sisters in-law; Richard and Blanche Verhagen, Kaukauna; Paul and Theresa Verhagen, Kaukauna; Irene Verhagen, Little Chute; two sisters and two brothers in-law, Ruth and Ervin Rosin, Little Chute; Mary and Gene Van Lannen, Kaukauna; many nieces and nephews.

    He was preceded in death by two brothers; Joe in 1944; Mark in 1968; and a sister, Leone Vand Hey in 1983.

    The funeral services will be at 10:30 Wednesday, October 4, 1989, at Holy Cross Catholic Church with Father Jack Mullarky officiating. Burial will be in St. John Cemetery, Little Chute. Friends may call at the Fargo Funeral Home, 400 W. Wisconsin Ave., Kaukauna, from 4 until 9 p.m. on Tuesday and after 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday until the cortege leaves for the church. There will be a parish prayer service at 7 p.m. Tuesday and the Knights of Columbus rosary will be at 7:30. A memorial fund has been established in his name.

    Verhagen, Richard G. "Rich"


    Richard Verhagen, 86, Kaukauna, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, April 23, 2010, at Appleton Medical Center with his family by his side. He was born on March 6, 1924, in Kaukauna, the son of the late Harry and Christine (VandenHeuvel) Verhagen. On May 6, 1947, he married Blanche Verhagen at Holy Name Catholic Church in Kimberly. Rich was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church. He was employed at the Combined Locks Paper Mill for 39 years, retiring in 1986.

    Rich enjoyed golfing, bowling and deer hunting with his sons in Tigerton. After his retirement, he would spend time at Partridge Lake in Fremont, fishing. Rich loved his farm, his garden and most of all his family.

    He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Blanche Verhagen; 11 children, Bev (Clarence) Weyers, David (Audrey) Verhagen, Mary (special friend, Tom) Lappen, Jeff (special friend, Cindy) Verhagen, Sheila (Bob) Cook, Dennis (special friend, Joy) Verhagen, Rick (Karen) Verhagen, Catherine Reetz, Brian Verhagen, Alan (Julie) Verhagen and Susan Verhagen; 25 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren; sisters, Ruth Rosin and Mary Jean VanLanen; brother, Paul (Theresa) Verhagen; three sisters-in-law, Donna Verhagen, Irene Verhagen and Delores Hennessey; and two brothers-in-law, Eugene (Rosie) Verhagen and Russell Hassell. Rich is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

    He was preceded in death by his daughter, Patricia (James) Lambie; an infant great-grandson; sister, Leone (Frederick) VandeHey; brothers, Joe Verhagen, an infant brother Joe, Earl Verhagen and Mark Verhagen; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Louis and Mary Verhagen; sister-in-law, Yvonne Hassell; brothers-in-law, Eugene VanLanen, Ervin Rosin, Harlan (Ann) Verhagen, Marvin Verhagen, Averd (Gladys) Verhagen, Clayton Verhagen and Ken Hennessey.

    The funeral liturgy for Richard will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, April 27, 2010, at HOLY CROSS CATHOLIC CHURCH, 309 Desnoyer Street, Kaukauna. Father Tom Pomeroy will be officiating. Burial will take place at the parish cemetery. A visitation will take place on Tuesday at the church from 9 a.m. until the time of Mass.

    In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established in his name.

On May 6, 1947 she married Richard Verhagen at Holy Name Catholic Church in Kimberly and together they enjoyed 62 years before Richard passed away on April 23, 2010. Blanche had a heart of gold and her family was her life. She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother and loved to cook and can. Blanche enjoyed golfing, bowling, camping and traveling, including her trip to Hawaii. In her later years she enjoyed watching the deer and turkeys in the back yard. Blanche was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church.

    Blanche is survived by 11 children: Bev (Clarence) Weyers, David (Audrey) Verhagen, Mary (special friend Tom) Lappen, Jeff (special friend Cindy) Verhagen, Sheila (Bob) Cook, Dennis Verhagen, Rick (Karen) Verhagen, Catherine Reetz, Brian Verhagen, Alan Verhagen and Susan Verhagen; 25 grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren; one sister:, Delores Hennessey; one brother: Eugene (Rosie) Verhagen; sisters-in-law: Ruth Rosin, Mary Jean VanLanen and Donna Verhagen and a brothers-in-law: Paul (Theresa) Verhagen and Russell Hassell. Blanche is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
