She was born January 11th, 1894, in Kaukauna, and was a lifelong resident. She was a World War II Gold Star mother, a member of the auxiliary of the VFW Post 3319, and a member of St. Mary Alter society. Survivors include three daughters and two sons in law, Johanna and Clarence Fink, of Algoma, Regina and Walter Swaningson, and Rosemary Kramer, all of Kaukauna; three sons and daughters in law, Ervin and Dorothy Verhagen, Eugene and Rita Verhagen, all of Kaukauna, Jerome and Kathryn Verhagen, of Waupaca; 25 grandchildren; 66 great-grandchildren; and sixth great great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Louis; two sons, Stephen, in World War II, and Melvin; and a daughter Lucine. The funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, at St. Mary Catholic Church,, with the Rev. Theodore Hendricks officiating. Burial will be in Holy Cross cemetery, Kaukauna.

He had been an area resident except for 10 years when he lived in Rock Island, Illinois, and currently was employed as manager of the Laydwell Floors Store, Oshkosh. He was an air force veteran of the Korean Conflice. Survivors include his wife, Carol Kersten Staniak; his parents, Mrs. Clarence (Joanne) Fink, Algoma; and Edward Staniak, Green Bay; five daughters: Lynn, Sue, Dianne, Barbara and Dawn; and a son, Dale, all at h ome; a half brother, Richard, Green Bay; and his maternal grandmother, Mrs. Catherine Verhagen, Kaukauna. The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary Catholic church, Kaukauna . . .

  • Note: Verhagen, Steven 1942 Kaukauna Times dated 1/20/1943; Kaukauna Times dated 1/20/1943; Corporal Steven C. Verhagen killed in action in Pacific; Mr. and Mrs. Louis Verhagen, 206 West Seventh Street, received a telegram from the adjutant general of the War Department Saturday informing them that their son Corporal Steven C. Verhagen 26, was killed in action in defense of his country December 31st, in the southwest Pacific area. Verhagen apparently died in the assault on Burma. He was one of four brothers in the service. He was born May 11th 1916 in this city and attended St. Mary's parochial school. He joined the Army in September 1940 as a member of Company D of Appleton. Early in December he met his brother, Sergeant Ervin Verhagen in New Guinea. They had not seen each other for two years and had been stationed only 7 mi. apart. It was a happy meeting for the two brothers. A letter received by the family informed them that the two brothers had planned on meeting again on December 30th the day before Steven was killed. Steven served as a machine gunner. Survivors are his parents; four brothers Sergeant Ervin serving in New Guinea, second-class seamen Melvin of Mare Island California, second-class seaman Eugene Indianapolis, Indiana, Jerome at home; three sisters Mrs. Walter Swaninnson, Mrs. Vincent Biese of Kaukauna, Mrs. Edward Staniak, Menasha, the grandmothers, Mrs. Mrs. Dora Verhagen of Little Chute and Mrs. Catherine Bergman, Waupaca. A requiem High Mass was held at St. Mary's Catholic Church for Corporal Verhagen Monday morning.
