Grandpa Gene went to St. John School from his first day of school until 12th grade. He had to walk to school every day from Freedom Road in Little Chute. He even had to walk to school when the snow was as high as the telephone poles!
Grandpa Gene went to the army. He was a cook in the army. Grandpa had a sergeant who hung around in the mess hall, which we call a cafeteria, and looked for extra food to eat. Well, this sergeant would eat anything my grandpa would give him. One day my grandpa knew he loved sponge cake, so he took two sponges and a lot of frosting. He iced the sponges and gave it to the sergeant. The sergeant cut the sponge cake and found out it was sponges, so the sergeant grabbed the sponges and squished it in his hands!
Grandpa Gene worked at Thilmany Paper Mill for 42 years. He has been retired for 7 years.
