Little Chute Soldier Known As 'Jap Killer'
With the 33rd Divison on Luzon - Promoted from private first class, Sergeant Howard Van De Hey, radio operator, son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Van De Hey, 822 Jefferson street, Little Chute, knows what it feels like to be a personal target of jap machine gun and he also knows what to do about it. A member of the 136th (Bearcat) Infantry regiment of the 33rd division, Sergeant Van De Hey has had much experience fighting the Japs both on northern Luzon and earlier in the second battle of Morotai island, in the Netherlands East Indies.
Known as 'Jap-killer' by his buddies, he killed a Jap officer on Morotai with his tommy gun, and has been killing Neps ever since. While still a private first class, Sergeant Van De Hey was on a patrol with his squad leader, Sergeant Eddie Grandziel, Chicago, Ill., and 14 Filipino Guerrillas in the mountainous terrain of northern Luzon near Bagulo,. Moving cautiously through low brush, they spotted a Jap running across a grassy clearing. They hit the ground just as a Jap light machine gun opened up on them, pinning them down. The long antenna of the radio formed a perfect aiming point for the Jap gunner, and as especially desirable target, as the Japs have learned that our radios are employed to send artillery and mortar barrages upon their machine guns.
Sergeant Van De Hey recalls that his situation was like popcorn on a griddle, as he kept dodging with the radio from side to side while the Jap gunner was mowing the grass all around them. Despite the harassing fire, the two Yanks succeeded in calling for and directing 4.2 inch mortar fire which knocked our the Jap gun. The patrol continued on its mission.
Sergeant Van De Hey has served more than two years overseas with his outfit, in Hawaii, New Guinea, in the second battle of Morotai and the Luzon campaign. He holds the combat infantry badge, the good conduct medal, the Asiatic-Pacific ribbon with two battle stars and the Philippines liberation rbbon with one battle star.
