VERY SAD ACCIDENT – Wife of C. Verweyst Killed
About four o'clock on Tuesday afternoon our citizens were shocked and grieved to hear of the sudden death of Mrs. Verweyst which occurred at her home on South Madison Street. The lady had mounted a step ladder in her orchard and was picking crab apples. She had been at work but a short time when the ladder became unsteady and she fell forward to the ground, striking on her temple with such force that her neck was dislocated. Her little girl, who was with her, gave the alarm and Dr. Monk was called, though when he reached the unfortunate woman she was beyond all human help, probably have died instantly.
To make the accident more sad, if such a thing were possible, neither Mr. Verweyst nor his daughter, who has always waited upon her mother, were at home. The former was away at his work and the latter had gone over town to do some shopping. The grief of both on their return was heart rendering.
Julia Dara was born in Poland, Sept, 20, 1850. She came to America with her parents when seven years of age and lived in Washington County until 1861 when her parents moved to the town of Woodville, this county. On April 9, 1866 she was married to Cornelius Verweyst and twelve children were born to them, seven of whom survive. In 1883 she moved with her husband to the town of Charlestown and located on what is known as the Fadner farm. They resided there until 1894 when they moved to this city and she has since made her home here. In 1888 she lost four children through the dread disease, diphtheria. Mrs. Verweyst was spoken of by those who knew her well as a woman of exemplary character, unselfish, hard working and a true help mate to her husband. She was a member of the mother church and was buried at nine o'clock, Friday morning, from St. Mary's church, her remains being laid to rest in the German Catholic cemetery.
