  • Note: Trisha Lynn Simon (nee Gerndt) age 40, of Bartlett, Illinois since 1998, formerly of Suring passed away on August 22, 2012. Beloved wife of Jeff; loving mother of Nicolas and Ian; cherished daughter of David and Mary Gerndt; dear sister of Brian Gerndt; fond daughter in law of Roger and Carol Simon; many loving nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. A special thank you to her wonderful medical team. Trisha was the Director of Community Health for Hanover Township, a member of the Bartlett Fire Department and a past employee of Northwest Oncology.

    Gathering of family and friends will be held at Maple Valley Community Church in Suring on Saturday, September 1, 2012 from 10 AM until the memorial service at 11 AM with Pastor Rick Cooney officiating.   • Marriage: He and Regina Kuepper were married on December 29, 1894 in Holy Angels Church, Darboy, Wisconsin.
  • Marriage: John Peter Hopfensperger and Petronella Adriana VanHandel were married on August 23, 1900 in Holy Angels Church, Darboy, Wisconsin.
  • Death: John Peter Hopfensperger died on March 12, 1932, at age 66, in Town of Buchanan, Outagamie Co, Wisconsin.
  • Burial: He was buried in Holy Angels Cemetery, Darboy, Wisconsin.
  • Note: John Hopfensperger, Sr., 66, died suddenly from a hear attack at 5 o'clock Saturday afternoon while sitting in a chair at his home in the town of Buchanan. Mr. Hopfensperger, a retired farmer, was born in the town of Buchanan and lived there his entire life.
    Survivors are the widow; seven daughters, Mrs. Harry Van Denzen, Mrs. Edward Steidl, Kaukauna; Mrs. Antone Braun, Menasha, Mrs. Earl Coffey, Milwaukee, Louise, Blanche and Carmen, at home; ten sons, John and Alois, Kaukauna; Charles of Little Chute; Arthur of Kimberly; Barney of Menasha; Joseph, Richard, Reynold, Elmer and Earl, at home; one sister, Mrs. Martin Toonen, Appleton; and 30 grandchildren.
    The body was taken from the Schommer Funeral home to the residence Sunday afternoon. The funeral will be held from the home at 9:30 Wednesday morning, with services at 10 o'clock at Holy Angels church, Darboy. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.

    Darboy Resident Dies at Age 96, Rites Saturday
    Mrs. Nellie Hopfensperger, 96, of Darboy died Wednesday after a three month illness. She was born January 12, 1878 in the Town of Vandenbroek and had lived in the Darboy area for the past 74 years. She was a member of the Third Order of St. Francis and of the St. Ann's Society at Holy Angels Catholic Church, Darboy.

    Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Otto [Louise] Lemke and Mrs. Robert [Blanche] Lehrer, both of Neenah; and Mrs. Alois [Carmen] Thiel, Rt. 1, Menesha; four sons, Richard, Appleton; Reynold, Rt. 4, Appleton; and Elmer and Earl, both of Rt. 4, Kaukauna; one step daughter, Mrs. Earl Coffey, Milwaukee; 40 grandchildren and 74 great grandchildren and 19 great-great grandchildren.

    Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Saturday at Holy Angels Church, Darboy, with interment in the parish cemetery. Chief Concelebrant of the Mass will be her grandson, Rev. Ronald Hopfensperger, assisted by Rev. Stan F. Kolbusz and Rev. Andrew g. Linsmeyer. Friends may call at the Greenwood Funeral Home after 4 p.m today. St. Ann Society will recite the rosary at 7 o'clock and a prayer service will be at 8 p.m this evening.

    Earl F. Hopfensperger W4958 Schmidt Road, Kaukauna, age 83, died peacefully Sunday June 24, 2001, at his home. He was born June 1, 1918, in the Town of Buchanan, son of the late John and Nellie (Van Handel) Hopfensperger. On October 11, 1949 he married the former Mary Striegel at St. Edwards Catholic Church, Mackville. The couple resided in the Darboy area their entire married lives. Earl was a farmer for over 70 years. His favorite pastime was dancing with his 'lovely wife' of 59 years, Mary. Earl was an active member of Holy Angels Catholic Church, Darboy, where he served as an usher, helped with the church picnic and was a past member of the Holy Name Society.

    Survivors include his wife, Mary, Kaukauna; two sons and daughters in-law, John 'Jack' (Lyn) Hopfensperger, Sherwood; Ralph (Sue) Hopfensperger, Kaukauna; four daughters and sons in-law, Gerri (Jim) Steger, Appleton; Martha (Dan) Vanevenhoven, Little Chute; Marilyn (Alan) Portman, Little Chute; Suzie (Kurt) Weyers, De Pere; 19 grandchildren, Judy (Jim) Thomas, Atlanta; Brian (Mary) Hopfensperger, Connecticut; Donna (Paul) Papenfuss, Kaukauna; John (fiancee, Heather), Stevens Point; Ken, Kris and Kim Van Rossum, all of Sherwood; Heidi, Jennifer (fiance, Matthew Binsfield), Stephanie and Nicole Hopfensperger, all of Kaukauna; Sheila (Ross) Van Handel, Mickey Steger, all of Appleton; Scott (Becky) Vanevenhoven, Kaukauna; Todd (Althea) Vanevenhoven, Kimberly; Amy (Scott) Janssen, Little Chute; Aaron Portman, Michigan; Leah and oOlivia Weyers, De Pere; 17 great grandchildren; a sister, Carmen Biese, Sherwood; a sister in-law, Ceil Hopfensperger, Darboy; numerous nieces and nephews. He is further survived by his wife's family, Estell Moehring, Seymour; Bob (Dorothy) Striegel, Mackville.

    Earl was preceded in death by a daughter at birth, Mary Martha Hopfensperger; two grandchildren, Rachel and Beth Weyers; four brothers, Joseph, Richard, Elmer and Jim; three half sisters and five half brothers.

    Funeral services will be 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at Holy Angels Catholic Church, Darboy, with Father Tom Pomeroy officiating. Burial will be in the parish cemetery. Friends may call directly at the church from 2:30 p.m. Wednesday until the time of services. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in his name.     On Saturday, April 9, 2016, God gained a special angel. It is with great sadness we announce that Geraldine A (Gerri Hopfensperger) Steger traveled to heaven surrounded by her family after a 2 year courageous battle with lung cancer. Gerri was born on August 6, 1944 in Appleton, Wisconsin, the daughter of Mary Hopfensperger and the late Earl Hopfensperger. Gerri graduated Kaukauna High School in 1962 and on September 16, 1967, she married Jim Steger, the love of her life. She loved to travel and was fortunate enough to travel many times to Europe, the Caribbean and Hawaii. She saw the Panama Canal, Niagara Falls, Mount Rushmore, Grand Canyon, and traversed the continental United States. Many wonderful memories were created when she and Jim took the whole family on a trip to Disney. Gerri was also blessed to winter in Arizona for seven years.

    Gerri was the kind of wife, mother, nana, sister and friend of which legends are made of. She loved and treasured her family and devoted her life to them. She was simply her family's hero. Gerri was very close to her five grandchildren. She followed their lives with pride and enjoyed watching their high school sporting events. Gerri adored spending time with her family at their Pine Lake cottage in Waupaca.

    One of her other great passions was her job at Thilmany, spending 43 years trying to make a difference. After retirement, she even went back for a short time. Gerri volunteered her time and talents for the Red Cross, the Community Center and her church. She was a member of Holy Spirit Church for many years.

    Gerri always loved her flower gardens and loved to give tours of them. She loved reading and was proud of her book collection. After retirement, she began playing bridge and met wonderful new friends. She also took up stained glass work. Her finest piece being a Tiffany stained glass lamp shade.

    Gerri is survived by: her husband of almost 49 years, Jim; Children: Sheila (Ross) Van Handel and Mickey C Steger (special friend Carrie); Grandchildren: Frank, Claire, Lilli and Luke Van Handel and Mickey J Steger. She is furthered survived by her mother Mary Hopfensperger and brothers and sisters: Jack Hopfensperger, Ralph (Sue) Hopfensperger, Marilyn (Al) Portman, Suzie (Kurt) Weyers and Brothers-in-law Dan Vanevenhoven and Fred (Susie) Steger and numerous nieces and nephews. She was blessed with her special life-long friends Patricia Jansen and Kay Busse. She was preceded in death by her father Earl Hopfensperger, mother and father-in-law Harriet and Donald Steger, sister Martha Vanevenhoven, sisters-in-law Kathy Steger and Lyn Hopfensperger.

    A private family funeral will be held. Gerri will be buried next to her dad in the Holy Angels Cemetery. "Back to her roots!"

    Gerri will live on in each of us who carry and cherish her legacy of love and kindness.

    The family would like express a special thank you to Dr. Guenther and the FVHO staff, Dr. Munson and his staff, and Thedacare Hospice for their compassionate care. We would also like to thank family and friends for their help through this journey.

  • Note: Martha L. Vanevenhoven, Little Chute, age 64, died on Tuesday, December 4, 2012, with her family present, following a courageous 40 year battle with multiple sclerosis. Martha was an angel here on earth and now she is an angel in heaven. She was born May 15, 1948, in Darboy, Wisconsin, daughter of Mary (Striegel) Hopfensperger and the late Earl Hopfensperger. On September 22, 1972, Martha married Daniel Vanevenhoven. The couple lived in Little Chute their entire married lives. Even with the debilitating disease that was handed to Martha, she still enjoyed her time here on earth. She maintained a positive attitude and was a courageous fighter through it all. She truly loved life and lived every minute to the fullest. She enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. She absolutely loved the time she spent in her sunroom and enjoyed spending summer days out in her garden.

    She is survived by her husband of 40 years, Dan; her children: Scott (Becky) Vanevenhoven and their children Thomas and Keira: Todd (Althea) Vanevenhoven and their children Allison, Trey and Henry; her mother, Mary Hopfensperger; her brothers: Jack Hopfensperger, Ralph (Sue) Hopfensperger; her sisters: Gerri (Jim) Steger, Marilyn (Al) Portman, Susie (Kurt) Weyers; her sister-in-law, Nancy (David) VandenHeuvel. She is further survived by nephews, nieces, and many other relatives.

    She was preceded in death by her father, Earl Hopfensperger; her father and mother-in law, Ralph and Angie Vanevenhoven; and her sister-in-law Lyn Hopfensperger.

    The Mass of Christian Burial will be at 4:30 p.m. on Friday, December 7, 2012 at ST. JOHN NEPOMUCENE CHURCH (323 S. Pine Street, Little Chute) with Msgr. James Vanden Hogen celebrating.
