  • Marriage: He and Catherine Steffen were married in 1947.
  • Death: Robert F Schmieder died on October 11, 2015, at age 93.

Bob moved with his parents to Appleton in 1923. He attended St. Mary's Elementary School, as well as St. Joseph's Elementary School and graduated from Appleton High School in 1939. He attended Lawrence University for two years, interrupting his college education when he enlisted into the U.S. Navy V-5 Program, the Naval Aviation Cadet Program where civilians were trained to serve as Naval Aviators. Bob graduated from this program in 1943 and spent four years as a Navy Flyer, leaving the service as a Lieutenant J.G. He returned to Appleton and married Catherine (Katy) Steffen in 1947.

Bob owned and operated Schmieder's Grocery for 14 years, where he invented a recipe for Pasties under the Schmieder's Pasties brand, which was distributed in stores such as SuperValu in Minneapolis. He later was a construction sales representative for Structo Manufacturing and also served as an Outagamie County Board Supervisor and an Airport Commissioner for several years in the 1980s. He ended his full and varying career at ATW Cheese & Sausage, a specialty food retail shop located at the Appleton Regional Airport, which he and Katy owned and operated as a semi-retirement opportunity 1990-2006.

Bob is preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Katy, who passed away December 29, 2014, and is survived by their seven children Steve (Valerie) Schmieder, Denver, NC; C.C. (Bruce) Nesvig, Wilmette, IL; Bob "Norty" (Kris) Schmieder, Rocklin, CA; Jed Schmieder, Weyawega, WI; Mimi (Bill) Robertson, Neenah, WI; Willy (Martha) Schmieder, Brooks, GA; and Mardi (Paul) Larson, Minneapolis, MN; and by 12 grandchildren and 23 great grand children.

Bob led a full, active and rich life doing the things he loved. His passions included his family and long-time friends, flying airplanes (in the early '50s he and Katy co-owned a plane with another couple and flew it regularly as a weekend hobby), as well as celebratory gatherings and cooking. Bob loved certain foods such as cheese, sausage and pretzels - items sold at the ATW store -- as well as personally preparing German traditions like sulze, head cheese, Sauerbraten, Hasenpfeffer and, of course, Pasties.

His family and friends are deeply saddened by his death, but know that he is in his final resting place together with wife, as well as so many friends and family members that went before him.

Family and friends will celebrate the lives of both Katy and Bob on Saturday, November 7, 2015, with a Visitation at 1 p.m. and Memorial Service at 2 p.m. at Valley Funeral Home 2211 N. Richmond St., Appleton. A celebration will follow at Fox River House (formerly Schreiter's Coach Lamp Inn), 211 S. Walnut, Appleton.

Parents

Biography

  • Birth: Catherine Steffen was born on September 28, 1926 in Marquette, Marquette Co, Michigan.
  • Marriage: She and Robert F Schmieder were married in 1947.
  • Death: Catherine Steffen died on December 29, 2014, at age 88.
  • Note: SCHMIEDER, Katy

Catherine (Katy) Schmieder, age 88, died peacefully in her sleep on Monday, Dec. 29, 2014, at her home, in Appleton..

Katy was born in Marquette, MI, Sept. 28, 1926, the daughter of the late Catherine and Charles Norton Steffen. She married the love of her life, Bob Schmieder, on Sept. 6, 1947, and had 68 beautiful years together building a family of seven children, running Schmieder's Grocery Store, serving as a nurse in the ER at St. Elizabeth's Hospital and for Dr. Keith Buchanan, as well as creating a unique semi-retirement opportunity as owner and operator of ATW Cheese & Sausage, a small shop in the Outagamie County Airport, which she and Bob ran together for more than a decade.

A loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother, she was fiercely independent and had a you-can-do-anything attitude, which she firmly rooted in her children. Drawing on her nurses training and experience, she was a skilled caretaker to her husband for the past several years and helped her many friends living in the Ridgeview Highlands Apartments.

(Bruce) Nesvig, Wilmette, IL; Bob "Norty" ( Kris) Schmieder, Rocklin, CA; Jed Schmieder, Fond du Lac; Mimi (Bill) Robertson, Neenah; Willy (Martha) Schmieder, Brooks, GA; and Mardi (Paul) Larson, Minneapolis, MN; and by 12 grandchildren and 20 great grand children.

It was rare to see a frown on Katy's face and her smile and sparkly blue eyes became her signature -- recognized by many in the community.

"She was my favoritest person!" says husband Bob.

A service to celebrate Katy's beautiful life will be held at a later date.
