Biography

  • Birth: Mary Catherine Garvey was born on July 3, 1928 in Appleton, Outagamie Co, Wisconsin.
  • Marriage: She was married on September 8, 1954 in Madison, Dane Co, Wisconsin.
  • Death: She died on September 15, 2015, at age 87.
  • Note: Mary Catherine Garvey Hughes died September 15, 2015, at her home after a short illness. She was born in Appleton, Wisconsin, on July 3, 1928 to Rose and William Garvey.

On September 8, 1954, she married John Byron Hughes in the University of Wisconsin Chapel in Madison Wisconsin. Mary worked in banking in Freedom, Wisconsin and then in Madison while her husband completed Medical School at the University of Wisconsin. After John graduated medical school, they moved to Reno, Nevada, where John served in the Air Force. While there, they made life long friendships and Mary discovered gambling, but never lost more than a dollar. They spent any free time they had exploring Lake Tahoe, San Francisco and the west coast.

Two years later they moved to Milwaukee. While John completed his pediatric residency, Mary was caring for their two oldest children and teaching bridge at the Junior League of Milwaukee. They moved to Oshkosh in 1961, where she built a life around family, friends and community. Mary was an active member of St. Peter's Catholic Church. She was a member of Infant Welfare, Winnebago County Medical Society, Service League, and served on the board of the Oshkosh Public Museum for many years of which she was a past president.

Anyone who ever had the " Mary experience" knew she could always tell a good story with a twinkle in her eyes, a wink and a nod. Those who probably knew this best were her many bridge partners, tennis partners and close friends. As a business woman, she had a great financial sense and thus, a successful apartment rental business.

Mary's greatest pleasure was spending time with her children and grandchildren. She made each of them feel truly treasured and loved. Many fond memories were built at their cottage in Waupaca: making apple coffee cake, yard games, swimming, boating, sailing, water skiing and fishing. A favorite rainy day activity was playing bingo with a prize of penny candy. She made the cottage a gathering place for many childhood friends.

Mary is survived by her loving, husband of sixty-one years, John: son, Dr. Patrick Garvey Hughes, his wife, Dr. Sheila Anderson; daughter, Ellen Loftus, her husband, Mike and children, John, Elizabeth and Dan; son, Dr. Michael Garvey Hughes, his wife, Cyndy and children, Ryan, Tommy Pat, and Megan; daughter, Molly Penny, her husband, Rick and children, Richard John and Mary Catherine; sister-in-law, Zane Flemming; brother-in-law, Dr. Richard Hughes (Marsha); sister-in-law, Margaret Sharp (Tom); and numerous nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her parents, Rose and William Garvey, sister, Lola Hennis and a brother-in-law, Keith Flemming.

Visitation will be Friday, September 18, from 4 to 6 p.m. at Fiss & Bills-Poklasny Funeral Home, 865 South Westhaven Dr, Oshkosh, Wi. with a prayer service at 6 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated for Mary at Most Blessed Sacrament Parish, St. Peter's Church, 435 High Ave., Oshkosh, Wis., on Saturday September 19, at 10:45 a.m. There will be no visitation at the church prior to the Mass. Interment will be in Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery. In lieu of floral expressions, a memorial fund will be established in her name.

The family would like to thank all those involved in her care at Aurora ICU, Preferred Home Health Care, Valley VNA and Dr. Amar Alzoubi and his staff.
