    William Bates, 79, grain and commission merchant in Waterloo for more than 50 years, and a veteran of the Civil War, died at 9:20 p.m. yesterday at the home, 519 Fourth street east, after an extended illness of Bright's disease. He had been bedfast for the last two weeks.

    Mr. Bates was born Aug. 5, 1847, at Davies, Ill. When a small child he moved with his parents to Hazel Green, Wis., where he spent his boyhood. When only 16 years of age, he enlisted in the army for service during the Civil War. He enlisted in Co. I., Sixteenth Wisconsin infantry, which became a part of the Seventeenth army corps. He served in that company two years till the end of the war.

    Discharged in Illinois, Mr. Bates returned to his home at Hazel Green and on March 4, 1869, married Miss Salome Harper. Immediately following his marriage he brought his wife to Waterloo, which has been their home since. They celebrated their golden wedding her in 1919.

    Mr. Bates entered the produce and grain and commission business when he first came to Waterloo and became widely known thruout the state. He was actively engaged in business until forced to his bed two weeks ago.

    He was a member of Christ Episcopal church for many years and was the youngest member of Robert Anderson post, G.A.R.

    Surviving besides his widow are four children; three daughters, Mrs. H.D. Haffa, Mrs. T.R. McCoy, Waterloo, and Mrs. Harland Krueger, Chicago; and a son, Edward Allen Bates, whose whereabouts are unknown. Two grandchildren, Miss Dorothy Haffa and Henry Haffa, jr., and a great granddaughter, Virginia Haffa; two sisters, Mrs. Samuel Shilliam, and Mrs. F.F. Strayer, Waterloo, and a brother, Frank Bates, Los Angeles, Cal., also survive. A brother, J.E. Bates, Waterloo, died two years ago.

    Funeral services will be at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday in Christ Episcopal church. Rev. E.B. Mounsey, pastor, officiating. Brief prayer services in the home will precede the church service. Burial will be in Fairview. The body will be at the O'Keefe & Towne mortuary until Wednesday morning.

    MRS. WM. BATES, RESIDENT OF CITY SINCE 1869, DIES
    Widow of Civil War Soldier and "Granddaughter of Revolution."

    Mrs. Salome Bates, 85, widow of William Bates, and a pioneer resident of Waterloo, died at midnight Wednesday at her home, 519 Fourth street east, of a complication of diseases incident to advanced age. She had been bedfast for 15 months.

    Mrs. Bates came to Waterloo with her husband in 1869, and Mr. Bates engaged in the produce business. Later he traveled for the grain commission trade.

    Salome Harper was born Dec. 20, 1848, at Hazel Green, Wis., the daughter of Moses Allen and Hester J. Harper. She grew to young womanhood there and on March 4, 1859, was married to William Bates, at Hazel Green.

    Husband on Sherman's March--Mr. Bates had enlisted in the Union forces at the age of 16 and served thruout the Civil War, being with Sherman on his march to the sea.

    The couple celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1919 at Waterloo.

    Mrs. Bates was a member of Christ Episcopal church and of the Ladies' guild and Circle No. 1 of the church; and a member of the Happy Hour club. Mrs. Bates was one of two granddaughters of Revolutionary war soldiers residing in Waterloo, the other being Mrs. C.F. Brown, 420 Commercial street.

    Mrs. Bates' husband preceded her in death, January 31, 1927 at Waterloo.

    Four Children Survive--Surviving are three daugthers, Mrs. H.D. Haffa, 113 Lafayette street; Mrs. T.R. McCoy, 706 Fourth street east; and Mrs. Harland Krueger, Oshkosh, Wis.; one son, Edward Allen Bates, Chicago; two grandchildren, Dorothy Haffa and Henry Haffa, jr.; four great grandchildren; three brothers, Charles Harper, Dr. Neil Harper and J.C. Harper, all of Madison, Wis., and two sisters, Misses Caroline and Mildred Harper, both of Hazel Green, Wis.

    There will be a private service for the family at 2:15 p.m. Saturday at the home, 519 Fourth street east, followed by a public service at 2:30 in Christ Episcopal church, Rev. E.H. Mounsey, rector, officiating, assisted by Rev. E.D. Hull. Burial will be in Fairview cemetery, beside the grave of her husband.

    The body is at the Parrott & Wood funeral home.

    Katherine L. Krueger, 86, of Oshkosh died Saturday Jan. 12, 1991, in Mercy Medical Center.
    She was born April 10, 1904, in New York, N.Y., the daughter of William and Calome Bates. She married Harland Krueger in Chicago.
    Katherine was a photographer for Miles Kimball for 32 years, after moving to Oshkosh in 1931. She was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church.
    Her Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Calome and Kelly DeCianni, and a son and daughter-in-law, Harland and Donna Krueger, all of Oshkosh; eight grandchildren, Kristy Davis, Jody Hutchinson, Sharli Krueger, Jenny Walters, Melanie Weber and Keith, Dave and Mike DiCianni; and four great-grandchildren, Jennifer, Kitie and Peter Davis and Mindi Walters.
    Private services were held with inurnment in Riverside Cemetery.
