  • Note: Beatrice M. Wittlin, age 84, of Black Creek, passed away on Wednesday, November 5, 2014, at St. Elizabeth Hospital, Appleton. Bea was born on October 24, 1930, in Eagle River, to the late George and Caroline (Punches) Alsteen. She attended school in Rhinelander and was married to Clarence "Bud" Wittlin there in 1954. The couple moved to Black Creek where Bea and Bud raised their family and operated the family farm until the present day.

    Bea enjoyed being with her family, especially her grandchildren. She also enjoyed time spent with friends and traveling West each fall to Deadwood, South Dakota. "A friend in need is a friend indeed" was Bea's favorite expression and she lived her life on this moral concept. She was always offering to help with rides, meals, visits and babysitting. Bea will be greatly missed by family and friends.

    Survivors include her husband of 60 years, Bud; her children, Denice (Rick) A. Lorenz, Greenville; William "Bill" Wittlin, Black Creek; Rita Nuttall, Atlanta, Georgia; Ann Wittlin, Boston, Massachusetts; and Michael Wittlin of Black Creek; her three grandchildren, Jared and Brittany Nuttall and Jonathon Lorenz; and her sisters, Genevieve, Melva, Judy and Janet. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Bud, Herb and Gene, and her sister Evelyn.

    The Funeral Liturgy will be at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, November 11, 2014, at ST. PATRICK CATHOLIC COMMUNITY—STEPHENSVILLE, N3686 State Road 76, Hortonville, with Fr. Richard Allen officiating. Friends may call directly at the church on Tuesday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of services. Interment will be in St. Patrick Catholic Church Cemetery. The family would like to extend a sincere thank you to the Greenville First Responders and to the staff of the Emergency Room at St. Elizabeth Hospital for their loving care.   • Note: Merlin P. "Butch" Moderson, 85 of Appleton passed away on November 8, 2014. Merlin was born on September 14, 1929 in Kimberly, Wisconsin to Paul and Irene (Bartman) Moderson. He was a graduate of Kimberly High School. After graduation he served his country as a member of the U.S. Army. On April 11, 1953 he married his wife Dorothy and they enjoyed over 61 years together. He was a longtime employee of Appleton Coated Paper, where he was a member of the Quarter Century Club, working in the coating department and retiring on January 31, 1997. He attended Sacred Heart Parish in Appleton. Merlin was an avid Packers fan. He loved playing the Lottery and recently made a trip to Madison after winning $1,000.00. He also enjoyed Polka music and dancing. Merlin was also known for his love of bicycling. In 1972 he started riding his bike to work from his home and the family estimates that he has ridden well over 40,000 miles on his bicycle.

    Merlin will be sadly missed by his wife Dorothy, children: David (Kathy) Moderson of Appleton; Paul (Julie) Moderson of Kaukauna; Conni Moderson of Neenah; Patti Schmidt of Appleton; Michael Moderson of Appleton; grandchildren: Terra Durango; Mark (Hannah) Moderson; Greg (Naomi) Moderson; Kurt Moderson; Jill (Jeremy) Toombs; Jesse Moderson; Erik Schmidt; Erika (special friend Justin) Schmidt; Evan (Rachelle) Schmidt; great-grandchildren: Andrew, Makayla, Tyler, Lily, Nathaniel, Thaddeus, Neveah, Dominik, McKenna, Gavyn, Gabryella, Jayda, Althea and Myumi, brother: Ron (Jan) Moderson; sisters: Shirley Hale; Marlene VanRoy; as well as many other relatives and friends.

    He was preceded in death by his parents Paul and Irene Moderson, Dorothy's parents William and Leona Heiman; brothers-in-law: Don Hale and Adrian VanRoy.

    Friends may call at Wichmann Funeral Home, 537 N. Superior Street in Appleton on Thursday November 13, 2014 from 4:00 to 7:00 pm. There will be a Parish Prayer Service at the funeral home on Thursday at 6:30 pm. Visitation will continue on Friday from 9:30 to 10:30 am at Sacred Heart Parish, 222 E. Fremont Street in Appleton. Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday at the church at 10:30 am with military honors to follow. Burial at Highland Memorial Park.     Shawn Patrick Van Lanen, 26, a Green Bay resident, passed away unexpectedly on May 5, 2002, at a local hospital. He was born in Green Bay on Nov. 8, 1975, to Lyle and Patricia Fonferek Van Lanen. Shawn graduated from De Pere High School in 1994. He enjoyed working with John, Patsy, Bobby, Sandy, Jenny, and Matt at the Redwood Inn for many years. Shawn loved the outdoors, especially deer hunting with his uncles Joe and Mike, and during the winter months snowmobiling with his brothers, Matthew, Jeremy and Chad. He enjoyed working in his rose gardens and caring for his much loved animals, especially his dog, Kilo. Holidays were very special to him; especially Christmas, Halloween, and the Fourth of July. His 6-year-old daughter, Briana, was the shining star in his life, and the time spent together doing their special projects meant the world to him. His nieces Cassie and Donna will miss all the special moments they shared together. Survivors include his father and mother, Lyle and Patricia Van Lanen; two sisters, Melissa and Scott Glinski, Green Bay, and their children, Cassandra, Macayla, Donna and Renee; Christina Van Lanen and Andrew DeKeuster; three brothers, Matthew Van Lanen and Kari Anderson, Jeremy Van Lanen, and Chad Van Lanen, all at home. His very loved daughter, Briana, at home; Paternal grandparents, Harvey and Verona Van Lanen; Many Aunts, Uncles, and Cousins. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Norbert and Donna Fonferek. Friends may call at Proko-Wall Funeral Home on Wednesday from 4-8 p.m., and again on Thursday after 9 a.m. until the procession leaves for church. Parish wake service at 6 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home. Mass of Christian Burial 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Francis Church, De Pere, with the Rev. Anthony Dolski officiating. Entombment in the Shrine of the Good Shepherd Mausoleum. The family would like to extend special thanks to Dr. Vogels and the nursing staff at Aurora Bay Care Hospital for their compassionate care of Shawn and his family.

  • Note: Shirley Jane Hale, age 87 of Appleton, passed away Wednesday, October 28, 2015, at the Kimberly Assisted Living Facility. She was born November 7, 1927, in Kimberly, the daughter of the late Paul and Irene (Bartman) Moderson. Shirley attended area schools and graduated from Kimberly High School.

    On May 4, 1957, Shirley married Donald Hale. Donald preceded Shirley in death on August 12, 2003.

    Shirley worked in the healthcare field for many years, working in area nursing homes.

    She loved animals and being outdoors, as well as gardening and bird watching. Anyone who knew Shirley knew of her love for the color "purple".

    Shirley is survived by her daughter, JoAnn (Bobby) Horn of Red Oak, TX; son, Virgil (Barbara) Hale of Darboy; and grandchildren, Lauren Wilz of Oregon and Drew Wilz of Appleton. She is further survived by her brother, Ron (Jan) Moderson of Menasha; sister, Marlene Van Roy of Kimberly; sister-in-law, Dorothy Moderson of Appleton; brother-in-law, Jim (Paula) Hale of Indiana; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband Donald; Shirley was preceded in death by her brother, Melvin "Butch" Moderson; brother-in-law, Adrian Van Roy; and additional family members.

    A graveside service for Shirley will be held on Monday, November 2, 2015, at 1 p.m., at Highland Memorial Park, 3131 N. Richmond Street, Appleton.

    Shirley's family extends a Special Thank You to the Kimberly Assisted Living Facility and ThedaCare Hospice for the wonderful care given to her.
