    Martin Duffy

Martin Duffy, aged 80 years, died Monday evening at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Joseph Dietzler, at the corner of Kenneth avenue and Seventh street, after only a few hours illness of paralysis. He became unconscious at once after the fatal seizure, passing away 2 ½ hours from the time it commenced.

Mr. Duffy was born at Ennis, County Clare, Ireland, and came to America at the age of 15 years to Poughkeepsie, N.Y., where he lived a short time and then came west with his mother and two sisters to Brothertown, Calumet county, where 56 years ago he was married to Mrs. Eliza Conaughton and where he resided many years, raising an interesting family of children, three of whom are now living.

Mr. Duffy was a well-educated man and for a number of years was clerk of Calumet county. He later became a resident of Oshkosh where he was a bookkeeper for four years, in the offices of the Paine Lumber company, until he accidently broke his thigh bone. The accident so incapacitated him for business that he retired. Up to that time, he had led an active life, being as he was one of the early pioneers of the great state of Wisconsin and moving into Calumet county before its trackless forests had been conquered by the hand of man. He had been instrumental in blazing the way for the thrifty people who now populate that rich section of the state. Recognizing that knowledge is the key to power he gave all his children the best education obtainable and who now revere his memory for all he did for them.

His wife died three years ago and since then he has made his home mostly with his daughter in this city.

Five children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Duffy, three of whom are now living: Mrs. Joseph Dietzler, Kaukauna; Mrs. Albert Vander Heiden, Glenwood; and Mrs. Fred Gleed Bonners, Ferry, Idaho, the latter being unable to reach here for the last sad rites on account of the distance and the brief period intervening.

The funeral was held from St. Mary's church at nine o'clock Wednesday morning, Father F. X. Steinbrecher officiating, with interment in the parish cemetery. It was his request that his funeral be private without flowers. On account of the rules of the Catholic church and the hours set aside for service during Holy Week preceding Easter, it became necessary to hold the funeral Wednesday instead of Thursday, which no doubt proved a disappointment to quite a number who had planned to attend.

The pallbearers were the Messrs. Jos. La Cass, Ferdinand Klarer, Barney Verfuerth, Peter Hoolihan, William Blair and Jack Kline.

Those in attendance from out of the city were: Mr. and Mrs. Luke Owens, Chilton; Mrs. J. Dufy and daughter, Aileen, of Manitowoc; Mrs. Schumacher and Mich. Dietzler, Appleton; Mr. and Mrs. Fred Hartzheim, Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Dietzler and sons, Martin and Stephen, of Darboy; Mrs. Kitto and daughter, Nelli, of Combined Locks; Prof. and Mrs. Klumb of Little Chute.
