    A CANADIAN SOLDIER
One hundred and sixteen years ago tomorrow (March 11, 1826) a French-Canadian soldier died at Vaudreuil. Captain Jean Baptiste Lefebvre La Cerisiac was born at Pointe Claire, Sept. 8, 1753. His civil occupation is not stated, but he was evidently a good soldier, because his name is in Mr. L. H. Irving's Toronto-printed list of British officers who served with honor in the war of 1812-'15. He was a captain in the Vaudreuil militia, of which Hon. Alain Chartiere de Lotbiniere was colonel. Under the command of Lieut.-Col. D'Eschambault his battalion tool part in a battle at Pittsburg, N.Y., Nov. 13, 1813.
The worthy captain lived in history not as a soldier, but as a benedict, with a very big B, for he was married no fewer than six times. He was 25 years old when on Jan. 13, 1778, he married Rosalie Bicaire, in her 19th year. She died six years after her marriage, Feb. 15, 1784, leaving three children. After 20 months of widowhood Lefebvre, on Nov. 21, 1785, took a second wife, Archange Daout, 20 years old. She was Madame Lefebvre for seven years, dying in 1792, her only child predeceasing her.
Lefebvre waited 15 months before he married his third wife. She was Eugenie Gauthier, aged 27, but she lived only four years, dying in March, 1798. Her son, Joseph Lefebvre, was married in 1836 to Marguerite Riel, and they founded a well-known Montreal family.
Having tried three maidens, the captain next turned his attention to widows. His fourth wife, married April 15, 1799, was Dame Ursule Sabourin, who was no youngster, for she had been first married 30 years before. She did not comfort the captain long, dying on the Nov. 2 following her wedding.
One experiment with a widow was not enough for Captain Lefebvre. Less than a year after the death, a second widow became the hostess of the Lefebvre home. She was the widow Francis Lalonde, who had been married at 16 and had a number of children, whom Lefebvre took in charge when their mother became the fifth Madame Lefebvre in 1800. Her regime lasted to March 15, 1811, after which she was buried in the parish churchyard.
Three years elapsed, years of alarms and war, and the good captain was presumably too busy at his soldering to seek a new wife; but when it was certain that the Americans had been defeated and that Canada was safe, Captain Lefebvre returned home to Vaudreuil, threw off his uniform and on Sept. 27, 1814, took a sixth wife, a third widow, Marguerite Charlebois Mondion, whose own first wedding dated 30 years back and who lived to a ripe old age, because she did not die until 1846, 20 years after her much-married spouse.
Published March 10, 1942 in the Lethbridge Herald, Alberta, Canada.
