B8 (photo included) Bernice Simon Schaefer, 69, of rural St. Cloud, died Wednesday, May 24, 2000, at Calumet Medical Center in Chilton after a lingering illness. She was born April 28, 1931, in Oakfield, the daughter of the late August and Isabella Lefeber Sippel. She attended St. Mary Catholic Grade School in Marytown and New Holstein High School. She married Arland Simon on April 28, 1953, and they resided in the Wolf Lake area until he died in 1974. She married Francis Schaefer on July 28, 1978, and they resided on the Schaefer homestead in rural Mt. Calvary until 1993 when they moved to the Wolf Lake area. Mr. Schaefer died in 1996. Bernice was employed at Tecumseh Products in New Holstein for more than 15 years. She was a member of Holy Cross Church at Mt. Calvary and Abler-Engel American Legion Auxiliary of Mt. Calvary, in which she served as an officer and avid volunteer for all the local parades. She also volunteered at Mt. Calvary Senior Center and donated numerous gallons of blood to Fond du Lac County blood drives. She loved her family and friends and her grandchildren and enjoyed bowling, playing cards, fishing, swimming and going on bus trips. She also enjoyed raising chickens and pigs and she was even referred to occasionally as "porker." She enjoyed being outdoors and being barefoot. She lived a carefree, happy life. She was always there to help people, never afraid to lend a hand or an ear to listen, especially for things her four loving children all needed her for. Bernice came from a large family. She enjoyed spending time with all her sisters and brothers. She will be missed dearly by all. She is survived by one son, Bernie (Connie) of Hilbert; three daughters, Judy Hanna and Sue (Charlie) Brown, all of Chilton, and Chris (Guy) Van Grinsven of rural St. Cloud; 10 grandchildren, Christopher "Fargo" Hanna and special friend Katrina Mallman, Kelly Hanna, Katie Hoen, Pam Brown, Rick Brown, Sarah Van Grinsven, Sarina Van Grinsven, Shelly Jo Van Grinsven, Eric Simon and Curt Simon; four great-grandchildren, Alicia Schmitz, Justine Schmitz, Alex Brown and Noah Brown; six sisters, Erma (Nathan) Danner of Grayslake, Ill., Tharcilla (Willard) Matznick of Marytown, Lillian Sippel of New Holstein, Dianne (Ronald) Reese of New Holstein, Mary Ann (Howard) Meyer of Kiel and Jean (Gary) Anderson of Portage; and two brothers, Harold Sippel of Hilbert and Donald (Helen) Sippel of Plymouth. Survivors also include brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, James and Delores Knaus of Weyauwega, Joseph and Pat Simon of Mt. Calvary, Remeiga Simon of Malone, Mary and Doug Viegut of Kaukauna, Cyril and Mary Schaefer and Jim and Mary Schaefer, all of Mt. Calvary, Claude and Stella Schaefer of Malone, Clarence and Stella Schaefer of Malone, Leona Engel of Fond du Lac, Edna Sabel of Fond du Lac, Virginia and Eugene Lefeber of St. Joe and Ray Ziegelbauer of Mequon; numerous loving nieces and nephews; neighbors and friends. She was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Garry Hanna; a granddaughter, Tammy Lynn Hanna; a sister-in-law, Carol Sippel; and a brother-in-law, Dan Danner. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Huss Funeral Home in St. Cloud and at 10:30 a.m. at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Mt. Calvary. The Rev. Peter Kutch will officiate. Burial will be at St. Joe Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. There will be an American Legion service at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. CHILTON - A 34-year-old Chilton man became the city of Chilton's and Calumet County's first traffic fatality of the year when he was killed early Sunday evening. Gary J. Hanna of N3376 Irish Road, Chilton, died of a severe trauma to the head. Calumet County Coroner Larry Adams said an autopsy is being conducted on Hanna. According to Chilton Police Chief Dan Albedyll, Hanna was the driver of a motorcycle that was involved in a collision with two cars on Highway 151 at the east city limits. Albedyll stated that the accident is under investigation and that details of the accident will be released on Tuesday morning.

Funeral services for Gary Joseph Hanna, 34, of N3376 Irish Road, Chilton, will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Wieting Funeral Home, Chilton. The Rev. Loren Nys, S.D.S. will officiate. Burial will follow in Hillside Cemetery, Chilton. Friends may call today from 4 to 8 p.m. and Wednesday from 7:45 a.m. to the hour of services at the funeral home. Mr. Hanna died Sunday, June 17, 1990, at Calumet Medical Center, Chilton, following a motorcycle accident. He was born June 26, 1955, in Menominee, Mich., a son of the late Harvey and the late Germaine Stauber Hanna Hayward. On July 6, 1974, he married Judy Simon in Chilton. Mr. Hanna attended Chilton High School and was employed with Ariens Co., Brillion. Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Kelly Lynn; one son, Christopher Joseph; one sister, Judy Hanna Luchinski of Mayville; and three brothers, Jerry Hanna and his wife Carol, Terry Hanna and his wife Betty and Donald Hayward, all of Chilton. A daughter, Tammy Lynn, preceded him in death.

She died Saturday evening at Theda Clark Hospital, Neenah, where she was a patient since shortly after birth. She was born March 22 at Calumet Memorial Hospital, Chilton. In addition to her parents, she is survived by a brother, Christopher at home; maternal grandmother, Mrs. Bernice Simon of Route 1, St. Cloud; great-grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. August Sippel of Marytown and Mrs. Arnold Simon of Mt. Calvary; and paternal grandparents, Mrs. Germaine Hayward of Chilton and Harvey Hanna of Escanaba, Mich. Burial was in the parish cemetery. Huss Funeral Home, St. Cloud, was in charge of arrangements.
