Lydia Grignon Freund Departs this Life
A Member of One of Kaukauna's Oldest Families
    6-21-1912

Mrs. Lydia Grignon Freund, wife of Charles Freund of Oconto, died Friday, June 14, 1912, at 5:40 o'clock, age 59 years.

Mrs. Freund was born in Kaukauna, her parents being Mr. and Mrs. Charles A. Grignon; her grandfather was Augustine Grignon who was the third earliest settler in Grand Kakalia and whose name is perhaps more intimately connected with all the first history of this city than any other.

Mrs. Freund always lived here until her marriage 27 years ago when they went to Oconto to reside. She was passionately attached to the old home in which she was born and which still stands on the lower river front, and each year she came back to spend several weeks at the dear old place with her sisters and brothers who still occupy it.

There is no more widely known name in the early history of the state of Wisconsin than that of the Grignons, as they were among the early territorial settlers long years before Wisconsin became a state, and who were once granted a tract of 1,000 acres of land along the river from by United States patent, and carried on the first commercial transactions in the old town Kaukauna had no church in the early days and the Grignon family attended the first Catholic church established in Wisconsin by Father Vandenbroek at Little Chute in 1836, and when it was planned to build the church anew of stone Mrs. Mary Grignon gave all the stone for the structure from their quarry. For many years, 11:30 a.m. for five or six weeks until her death there was reserved a pew for the Grignon family in St. John's church and the family lot is at St. John's cemetery where rests her father, Chas. A. Grignon.

Mrs. Freund was in delicate health for some time from chronic ailments but the immediate cause of her death was an acute stomach trouble which came on suddenly and from which she could not be relieved by medical aid.

She leaves a fond husband and daughter, Marie, who will always mourn her death and never cease to miss her gentle presence. Surviving also are her brothers and sisters, Fannie, Margaret and Mary at home, Augustine at San Antonio, Texas, Rosslier at Chickasha, Oklahoma and Charles A. at home.

The funeral was held Monday morning at nine o'clock from Holy Cross church under charge of Monsignoir P. J. Lochman, Vicar General of the Green Bay diocese, and interment was by the side of her mother in the family lot in the Holy Cross cemetery.

The pallbearers were John Lawe, Leo Lawe, John Claspill, Dr. W. N. Nolan, H. J. Mulholland and Joseph Reuter.

Those attending the Freund funeral from out of town were: Mrs. Alexander, Mr. C. A. Buckstaff, Dr. A. M. Freund, Mrs. A. Freund, Mrs. Orlando Clark, Mrs. H. Alexander, Mrs. C. A. Hukstaff of Appleton, Miss Mary Deoster, Miss Beaumont, Green Bay and A. J. Freund, Grand Rapids, Wis.
