Biography

  • Birth: Michael J O'Brien was born on August 2, 1943.
  • Death: He died on May 12, 2017, at age 73.
  • Note: Dr. Michael J. O'Brien, age 73, died Friday, May 12, 2017 of complications related to diabetes.

    He was born in Green Bay on August 2, 1943 to Dr. Erwin J. and Margaret (Hart) O'Brien and attended St. Patrick's Grade School and Premontre High School. At Premontre, he played on the basketball and golf teams. He graduated from the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana in 1965, and received his Ph.D. in American History from the University of Wisconsin - Madison in 1970.

    Michael taught history at the University of Wisconsin - Stevens Point from 1970 to 1972 and from 1972 to 2003 at the University of Wisconsin - Fox Valley where he earned several teaching awards. Michael coached youth soccer and worked for Boys and Girls Brigade and Habitat for Humanity. He served on the boards of the Boys & Girls Club and the Clark Lake Association.

    Michael authored nine books, including biographies of Senator Joseph R. McCarthy, Joe Paterno, Notre Dame's President Fr. Theodore Hesburgh, Senator Philip Hart, Vince Lombardi, and President John F. Kennedy.

    He will be deeply missed by his wife of 50 years, Sally (nee Pratsch), four children, Timothy (Jane) of Nashotah, WI; Dr. Sean (Angela) of Fairfax, VA; Jeremy (Andrea) of Woodbury, MN, and Carey (Craig) Podlesnik of Brookfield, WI. Michael was the proud grandfather of 12 grandchildren, Connor, Brendan, and Megan O'Brien; Dylan, Aidrian, and Patrick O'Brien; Emma, Jonah, and Kian O'Brien; and Nora, Claire and Ava Podlesnik. He is also survived by his brother, Rev. Dr. Charles O'Brien of Williamstown, MA, Rev. John O' Brien, and Patricia Schneider, both of Green Bay, WI; cousins; nieces and nephews; and friends.

    He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Fr. Christian (Tom) O'Brien, O. Praem; and four siblings-in-law, Donald Schneider, Elvy O'Brien, Rita Pratsch, and Bonnie Baldwin.

    Michael's life will be honored with a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated at 12:00 noon on Monday, May 15, 2017 at S.S. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Institute with his brother, Fr. John O'Brien, and his cousin, Fr. Bill O'Brien, concelebrating. Interment will be at Allouez Catholic Cemetery & Mausoleum.

    Visitation for family and friends will be held at the church, Monday morning, from 10:00 a.m. until the time of Mass.

  • Marriage: She was married on August 11, 1982 in Door County, Wisconsin.
  • Death: She died on July 3, 2016, at age 67.
  • Note: Bonnie Lee Baldwin, 67, of Forestville, Door County, formerly of Green Bay, passed away Sunday morning, July 3, 2016 at her home surrounded by her loving family.

    She was born November 27, 1948 in Green Bay, the daughter of the late Lloyd and Blanche (Goffard) Pratsch. Following her graduation from Green Bay West High School, Bonnie received her BA in Education from U.W. Green Bay. She continued her education receiving her Masters in Teaching from Leslie University. Bonnie was a teacher for life. She was employed with the Green Bay School District for nearly 30 years, teaching elementary and middle school students.

    On August 11, 1982, she married David O. Baldwin in Door County on the waters of Death's Door. They decided to enjoy an early retirement and in 2005 picked up from their New Denmark home and move to the New Mexico Mountains. They enjoyed the outdoors together, and hiked extensively in the Rockies. Always a teacher, she volunteer taught a Senior Women's work program in New Mexico, educating them with computer skills. Bonnie also loved landscaping at her homes creating beauty with and into her surroundings. After seven years out west they moved east to be nearer to family and eventually settled in Door County south of Sturgeon Bay.

    Bonnie was a supporter of the Green Bay Wildlife Sanctuary where she was a member of R-PAWS

    Her surviving family includes her husband, David; four children, Chad Anderson, Harlan Anderson, Heather (Philip Luders) Baldwin, Robin Woznica; six grandchildren, Lindsey Anderson, Briana Anderson, Connor Anderson, Ashley Woznica, Robert Woznica Jr., Cameron Woznica; three brothers, Lloyd Pratsch Jr., Robert Pratsch, Gordon Pratsch; three sisters, Sally (Michael) O'Brien, Linda (Larry) Reed, Carolyn (Richard) Dodd.

    A memorial service for family and close friends will be held at a later date to be determined.

  • Note: Bernice F. Manders, 84, De Pere, passed away peacefully on Saturday evening, October 29, 2016. She was born January 19, 1932. Bernice enjoyed playing cards, bingo, reading, puzzles, the Packers, and especially looking after her grandchildren.

    She is survived by her children, Michael (Pat) Manders, Linda (Jeff) Peloquin, Mark Manders, and her son in law Don Smet. Bernice is further survived by her grandchildren, Jessica, Thomas, Nicole, Clint, Ryan, as well as her great grandchildren, Logan, London, and one on the way. She was preceded in death by her daughter Mary Smet.

  • Marriage: She was married on July 3, 1971 in Green Bay, Brown Co, Wisconsin.
  • Death: She died on July 18, 2012, at age 60.
  • Note: Mary Ann Smet, 60, of De Pere, passed away peacefully on July 18, 2012. She was born on June 4, 1952 to Gerald Manders and Bernice Wauters in De Pere, WI. On July 3, 1971 she married Don Smet at St. Peter and Paul's in Green Bay. Mary enjoyed traveling, dancing, gardening, eating chocolate, and baking cakes, which she was well known for. Her favorite time of year was Christmastime, when she would set up her Christmas Village. She was a very hard worker, and spent time taking care of the people she loved.

    Mary is survived by parents; her husband, Don; her son, Thomas (Natasha) Smet, Milwaukee; her brothers, Michael (Pat) Manders and Mark Manders; and her sister, Linda (Jeff) Peloquin. She is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

    She was preceded in death by her grandmother and grandfather Wauters, her mother and father in law Smet, and her brother in law Smet.

    Visitation will be held on Friday, July 20, 2012 at RYAN FUNERAL HOME, 305 N. Tenth St., De Pere, from 4:00pm until 8:00pm, with a prayer service to be held at 7:00pm, Deacon Everett Doxtator presiding. Visitation will continue on Saturday, July 21 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 145 St. Joseph Dr., Oneida from 10:00am until 11:00am when a Mass of Christian burial will be held with Father John Kutumba and Deacon Everett Doxtator concelebrating.
