Biography

  • Birth: Donald Schoenborn was born on October 10, 1935.
  • Death: He died on April 25, 1957, at age 21.
  • Note: Kiel Youth Is Killed In Car-Truck Crash. KIEL (Special) - A Kiel youth was killed instantly early today in a car-truck accident on Highway 32 on the east outskirts of the city. The victim was Donald J. Schoenborn, 21, son of Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Schoenborn, of 307 Fremont St., Kiel. His death - the seventh of the year in Manitowoc County - raised Wisconsin's 1957 traffic death toll to 219 compared with 233 on this date a year ago. Schoenborn was killed outright when the car in which he was riding glanced off the rear of a semi- trailer truck, crossed the highway and smashed into a concrete culvert. Manitowoc County traffic officers identified the driver of the car as (omitted for privacy), 24, of Route 2, Kiel. He was taken to St. Nicholas Hospital at Sheboygan with a minor concussion and shock. Hospital attendants described his condition at noon today as "satisfactory." Dr. Theodore Teitgen, Manitowoc County coroner, attributed Schoenborn's death to a fractured skull. He has scheduled an inquest into the death for May 9. Traffic police reported that the car, a 1951 Chrysler four-door sedan, apparently was
traveling at "a high rate of speed" when it hit the left rear of the west-bound semi-trailer. The driver presumably was thrown from the driver's seat after the impact before the auto careened wildly across the road and struck the culvert. The truck driver, Nicholas J. Wilger, 43, of Route 1, West Bend, was uninjured. He is an employe of the Harnischfeger Corp., of Milwaukee. The accident happened about 1:30 a.m. It was the first fatal accident reported in Wisconsin since Monday. Officers said the car was a "complete wreck." Donald J. Schoenborn was born Oct. 10, 1935, at Marytown, a son of Oscar and Edna Casper Schoenborn. He attended schools at Marytown and Kiel. After his graduation from Kiel High School in 1956, he attended Spencerian College in Milwaukee and in recent months had worked at a Standard Oil Co. station in Kiel. He was a member of the CYO at Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Kiel.

Brief rites at the Meiselwitz Funeral Home at Kiel at 9:30 a.m. Saturday will be followed by a requiem high mass at 10 a.m. at Ss. Peter and Paul Church. The Rev. George Kiefer, assistant pastor, will be the celebrant of the mass.
Parishioners of Ss. Peter and Paul Church, including the young people of the church, will hold a vigil at the church at 7:30 o'clock Friday evening.
