  • Note: Richard W. "Dick" Van Boxel, Sr., 83, Green Bay, passed away Wednesday, May 23, 2012, at Aurora Baycare Medical Center. He was born April 16, 1929, to the late George and Thanna (White) Van Boxel. On July 30, 1949, he married Mary Pommier. They had 63 memorable years together. They owned and operated Van Boxel's Bar from 1972 to 2005 when they sold the business to their son and daughter-in-law, James and Debbie. From 1956 to 1972, Dick and Mary ran the Packer concessions for Walter Proski. Dick had worked in construction building homes and at Neville Insulation and as a bartender for Proski's Lounge, the Bay Bowl and Paul's Lounge. He retired from Georgia Pacific, formerly Northern Paper Mill, after 47 years.

    Dick enjoyed playing softball, golfing, bowling with the ABC's, hunting at the Zepp Club and in Wyoming, fishing at Washington Island, playing cards and shaking dice with his customers over the years and running trips to Las Vegas. He was a member of the Brown County Tavern League and was given an award for years of assisting Syble Hopp students to attend camp and Bay Beach outings. He was also a member of the Moose Lodge, the Elk's Club and the Eagle's Club.

    Survivors include his wife, Mary; five children and their spouses, Susan and Tony Le Comte, Richard "Butch" Van Boxel, Tom and Deniese Van Boxel, John and Kim Van Boxel, James and Debbie Van Boxel; his grandchildren, Jodi (Lee) Bain, Jeff (Joy ) Le Comte, Adam Van Boxel, Alex (special friend, Lori) Van Boxel, Kim (Kevin) Ahlswede, Niki Stuckart, Tara (Chris) DeGrand, Amie (Chris) Hvizdak; great-grandchildren, Paige, Brock, Heather, Briana, Autumn, Blake, Braxtan, Deidra , Braden; his sisters, Ione Piontek, Elaine Blohowiak, Joanne (Dave) Minten; sisters-in-law, Diane Pommier, Joan Winiecki, Linda (Carl) Grub, Phyllis (Dale) Paluch; nieces, nephews and dear friends.

    In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings and their spouses, Al and Jean Van Boxel, Don and Phyllis Van Boxel, George and Donna Van Boxel, Lucille and Bob Burgoyne, Betty and Chet Czieslewicz; his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Ethel and Elmer Pommier; brothers-in-law, James Pommier, Richard (Winifred) Pommier, Ray Winiecki; Fritz Piontek and Ken Blohowiak.

    Friends may call at Proko-Wall Funeral Home, 1630 E. Mason St., from 2 to 7 p.m. Friday. There will be a parish wake service at 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at SS. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, 710 N. Baird St., at 10 a.m. Saturday with Rev. Tony Cirignani, OFM officiating.
