  • Note: Lawrence J. Ebert, Wissota Health and Regional Vent Center in Chippewa Falls, Wis., previously of Eau Claire, Wis., passed away at Sacred Heart Hospital in Eau Claire on Sunday, Feb. 7, 2010.

    He was born to Joseph and Katherine (Meier) Ebert in the Township of Lessor, Wisconsin, on Dec. 21, 1921.

    In his younger years, Larry helped on the family farm, worked with his father's logging crews, and drove truck. He joined the Army in July of 1943, and was a technical sergeant during World War II in the Pacific theater. He was honorably discharged in January of 1946.

    Larry married Ruth Staub in Shawano, Wis., on Nov. 20, 1946.

    After their wedding he worked in the insurance business, then for many years as an industrial engineer in the pulp and paper industry. In 1973, Larry began working for UW-Eau Claire Facilities Management, and retired in 1984.

    Over the years, Larry was active in Boy Scouts, the Rhinelander Sportsman Club, and various Catholic Church councils in the different towns they lived in. He was a VFW commander while in Rhinelander, Wis. During his retirement, he enjoyed travelling, trout fishing and hunting at his cabin up north, and most importantly spending time with his family.

    Larry always wanted a large family. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Ruth; his children, Nan (Don) Bongers, Jim (Ingrid) Ebert, Mark (Diane) Ebert, Mary (Chris) Hoff, Greg (Pat) Ebert, Renee (Jesse) DeWitte; his daughters-in-law, Brenda Ebert and Karla Ebert; his grandchildren, Diana (Brad) Friis, Matthew Bongers, Benjamin (Cheryl) Ebert, Adam (Michele) Ebert, Tamee (Jacint) Simon, Michelle and Jessica Ebert, Timothy (Victoria) Hoff, Bethany and Nathan Ebert, Erin (Ali'i) Guzman, Brett Anderson, Katherine Ebert, Jon and Jamie Ebert, Eric and Rachel DeWitte; his great-grandchildren, Tyler and Nicole Friis, Joshua, Dawson and Mariah Bongers, Isabella and Bennett Guzman; and sister-in-law, Ardis Schultz. Larry is also survived by cousins, nieces and nephews.

    He was preceded in death by two of his sons, Steven and Thomas; an infant granddaughter, Adrianne Nicole Ebert; his parents, Joseph and Katherine; nine brothers and sisters, Howard, Beatrice, Cletus, Cordell, Lloyd, Marion (and their spouses) and Patricia, Margaret and Joseph, He was also preceded in death by his brother-in-law, Rueben Staub; his in-laws; and some nieces and nephews.

    A gathering of family and friends will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 10, at Stokes, Prock & Mundt Funeral Chapel, 535 S. Hillcrest Parkway, Altoona. The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Friday, Feb. 12, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Shawano, Wis. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. The burial, with military honors, will be held at Sacred Heart cemetery following the funeral.

    Larry was very grateful for the care he received at Wissota Health in Chippewa Falls. The family would like to thank Dr. Jeffrey Shepich of Marshfield Clinic and Dad's caregivers at Wissota Health and at Sacred Heart Hospital for their compassionate care. We are greatly appreciative of the support and guidance from Rev. Edmund Klimek at Sacred Heart Hospital.

  • Note: Ruth Clara Elizabeth Staub Ebert (previously of Eau Claire, Wisconsin) passed away Thursday, August 4, 2011 at Wissota Health and Regional Vent Center in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin. She was born November 25, 1921 in Shawano, Wisconsin to Paul and Clara (Mueller) Staub.

    Ruth grew up in Shawano and was valedictorian of the class of 1940 at Shawano High School. She was also the editor of the 1940 high school year book which won an award for editing that year. After high school, Ruth worked for the Shawano County Health Department until her marriage to Lawrence J. Ebert on November 20, 1946.

    Ruth was a homemaker, raising eight children. Ruth, Larry and the kids made their home in various cities over the years. They lived in Shawano, Rhinelander, Appleton, Kaukauna, and then 35 years in Eau Claire, Wisconsin before moving to Wissota Health in Chippewa Falls in the spring of 2009. Larry passed away February 7, 2010.

    She was a gentle woman loved by all that met her. Ruth loved to sew, do crossword puzzles in ink, play cards, and read. She loved babies and loved to read to her grandchildren. Her grandchildren always knew there were cookies in the cookie jar in her kitchen!

    Ruth and Larry were able to travel for some years after his retirement in 1984. They loved to hop in the car to visit family all over the country. They also enjoyed travelling to Europe a few times.

    Survivors include Ruth's children; Nan (Don) Bongers, Jim (Ingrid) Ebert, Mark (Diane) Ebert, Mary Ruth (Chris) Hoff, Greg (Pat) Ebert, Renee (Jesse) DeWitte, her daughters-in-law; Brenda Ebert and Karla Ebert, her grandchildren; Diana (Brad) Friis, Matthew Bongers, Benjamin (Cheryl) Ebert, Adam (Michelle) Ebert, Tamee (Jacint) Simon, Michelle and Jessica Ebert, Timothy (Victoria) Hoff, Bethany and Nathan Ebert, Erin (Ali'i) Guzman, Brett (Carly) Anderson, Katherine Ebert, Jon and Jamie Ebert, Eric and Rachel DeWitte, her great-grandchildren; Tyler and Nicole Friis, Joshua, Dawson and Mariah Bongers, Isabella and Bennet Guzman, her sister; Ardis Schultz, and a sister-in-law, Doris (Carl) Buchholtz. Ruth is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

    Ruth was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Larry; two sons, Steven and Thomas; an infant granddaughter, Adrianne Nicole Ebert; her brother, Rueben Staub, her parents and in-laws. She was the last of the aunts and uncles on the Ebert side, being preceded in death by Larry's sisters, brothers and their spouses.

    A gathering of family and friends will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, August 10, 2011 at Stokes, Prock & Mundt Funeral Chapel, 535 S. Hillcrest Parkway, Altoona. The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, August 11, 2011 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Shawano, Wisconsin. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. A luncheon will immediately follow the service, and burial will be after the luncheon at Sacred Heart cemetery. The family would like to thank all of the wonderful caregivers at Wissota Health in Chippewa Falls. Everyone was always so kind and compassionate towards our parents. We always enjoyed seeing all of your smiling faces. You were truly an extension of our family, and we will miss you all.

  • Death: He died on June 11, 2009, at age 49.
  • Note: Thomas A. Ebert, 49, of Eau Claire passed away Thursday, June 11, 2009, at his home, surrounded by the love and support of his family and friends after living with cancer for the past two years.
    Tom was born in Kaukauna on July 15, 1959, the son of Lawrence and Ruth (Staubb) Ebert.
    He graduated from high school in 1977. Tom received his accounting degree from UW-Eau Claire in 1981 and worked for several years as a certified public accountant. He received his MBA from UW-Oshkosh in December 1989.
    He married Karla Kurth in Eau Claire in 1990.
    Tom followed his passion for learning and teaching by becoming an instructor at UW-Stout in Menomonie. He also taught at Purdue at Fort Wayne, Ind., at UW-LaCrosse and at Winona (Minn.) State University. He was employed as the controller at Indianhead Food Service Distributors before returning to teaching at UW-Stout in 2003, where he was most recently employed. He had recently been honored by achieving tenure at UW-Stout.
    Tom was always willing to help others. He was active in the Eau Claire Jaycees for many years and was scoutmaster of Park School Pack 183 and assistant scoutmaster and treasurer for Grace Lutheran Troop 36 until May 2009. He was also a committee member for the 2008 Blue Angels Air Show in Eau Claire.
    Tom's smile was contagious. He enjoyed trout fishing, hunting, snowmobiling and golfing at his family's cabin. His love of remodeling and his brother Greg's vision provided many experiences in home renovation for his close friends and family. He was most happy spending time with his children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He enjoyed our many family gatherings.
    Tom's courage and determination to live his life fully is an inspiration to us all. He will be greatly missed.
    Survivors include his wife, Karla; his children, Erin (Ali'i) Guzman, Brett Anderson and Katharine Ebert; two grandchildren, Bella and Bennett; his parents, Lawrence (Ruth) Ebert, all of Eau Claire; six siblings, Nan (Don) Bongers of DePere, Jim (Ingrid) Ebert of France, Mark (Diane) Ebert of Appleton, Mary (Chris) Hoff of Oshkosh, Greg (Pat) Ebert of Eau Claire and Renee (Jesse) De Witte of Carlton, Minn.; his sister-in-law, Brenda Ebert, and his mother-in-law, Dorothy Backstrom, both of Eau Claire. He is further survived by nieces, nephews other relatives and friends.
    Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Monday, June 15, 2009, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Eau Claire, with the Rev. Eugene Klink officiating.
    Interment will be in Rest Haven Cemetery, town of Washington.
    Family and friends may call from 2 to 5 p.m. today at Stokes, Prock and Mundt Funeral Chapel, U.S. 12 East, Altoona, and an hour before services on Monday at the church.
