  • Note: Donald Everett Helf passed away peacefully at home on May 18, 2011. Don was born in North Tonawanda, NY, on May 22, 1920, to Walter and Grace (Congdon) Helf. On April 6, 1944, he married Ruth Anne Foehl in Anderson, IN, and they celebrated 67 years of marriage this year. Don was in the Army for four years serving much of that time as a Medic in France during WWII. After the war, he and Ruth returned to his hometown, where he worked for FG Herd & Sons, an Oldsmobile dealership and Brown Motors selling and servicing Nash automobiles. In 1952, he began working for General Motors, first as an instructor in one of their training centers in Western NY, then moving between New York City and Detroit working for the Delco Division. Upon his retirement from GM in 1980, he and Ruth moved to Neenah, WI, where they built the home they lived in until they moved to Touchmark in October 2009. Don taught himself to play the piano and loved to play and sing, especially with others. He loved visiting with their many friends around the country. He also was a Red Coat volunteer at Theda Clark Medical Center for many years.

    He is survived by three daughters: Jan (Dan) Curtin, Mary Jo (Mike) Baseman, Brenda (Keith) Krisher; eight grandchildren: Brett (Stephanie) and Jason (Lori) Kemp, Jon (Shanda), Jeremy, Joel (Mariah) and Suzanne Baseman, Jessica (Andy) Pamenter and Alison (Jeff) Whitehead, along with seven great-grandchildren: Kyle, Katie, Arianna, Maddison, Kailey, Ayla and Braedan. Don is also survived by his brother Stewart and his wife Irene as well as many nieces and nephews and their children.

    He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth, on May 7, 2011, just 11 days before him; his mother and father; his baby brother, Ralph Keith; his brother Chester and sister Frances.

    Don's family will greet visitors at Valley Funeral Home on Saturday, May 21, 2011, from 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. with the funeral service to follow at 1 p.m. A private burial will be in Highland Memorial Park in Appleton, WI.

    The family would like to express their gratitude and appreciation to nurses Janet and Kathy and all of the wonderful caregivers at Touchmark and to Cindy and all of the caregivers at Heartland Hospice. You made their life so much better over the last year and provided loving care at the end.

  • Note: Ruth Anne Helf, 89, passed away peacefully on May 7, 2011, at home. She was born on July 27, 1921, in Anderson, IN to Herman and Janie (Koeniger) Foehl. She married Donald Helf in Anderson, IN on April 6, 1944, and they just celebrated 67 years together. They went to Virginia right after their wedding but Ruth then returned to Indiana where she worked in a factory making radios while Don served in France as an Army Medic during WWII. Upon Don's discharge from the Army after the war ended, they returned to North Tonawanda NY. Ruth was a homemaker most of her life. She was a wonderful cook and could prepare a meal on a moment's notice and always had room for overnight guests. They lived in several homes in New York, New Jersey, Michigan and finally settling in Neenah, WI after Don's retirement from General Motors. They built a new home in Neenah where they lived until October 2009, when they moved to Touchmark Assisted Living in Appleton, WI.

    Ruth is survived by husband, Don, and three daughters: Jan (Dan) Curtin, Mary Jo (Mike) Baseman, and Brenda (Keith) Krisher; eight grandchildren: Brett (Stephanie) and Jason (Lori) Kemp, Jon (Shanda), Jeremy, Joel (Mariah) and Suzanne Baseman, Jessica (Andy) Pamenter and Alison (Jeff) Whitehead, along with seven great -grandchildren: Kyle, Katie, Arianna, Maddison, Kailey, Ayla and Braedan.

    Ruth was preceded in death by her parents, her sister and brother-in-law, Doris and Howard Foth, and her sister Jeanette Foehl.

    Ruth's family will greet visitors at Valley Funeral Home on Wednesday May 11, 2011 from 4 - 7 p.m. with a funeral service to follow at 7. Burial will be Highland Memorial Park in Appleton WI.

  • Note: Bernice Beyer, 90, of Appleton, passed away on Tuesday, May 10, 2011, at Brewster Village. Bernice was born on November 21, 1920, in the town of Black Creek to Fred and Laura (Sedo) Krueger. She was baptized and confirmed at St. John's Church in Black Creek. On November 20, 1943, she married Lester Beyer in Black Creek, and he preceded her in death in 1986 after 43 years of marriage. She joined Zion Lutheran Church in Appleton in 1948 and was very active in the church volunteering and cooking many meals. Bernice was a loyal member of the American Legion and the VFW.

    Bernice is survived by her sisters-in-law: Ruth Krueger, Ellen (Arthur) Beyer, a nephew Tom (Mary Lynn) Krueger, and many other nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

    Bernice was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her brother Kenneth Krueger, and a sister-in-law Ione Nieland.

    The funeral for Bernice will be held on Friday, May 13, 2011, at 6 p.m. at the WICHMANN FUNERAL HOME with the Rev Leon Knitt officiating. A time of visitation will be held on Friday from 4 p.m. until the time services at the funeral home. Interment will be in the Highland Memorial Park.

    The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at Brewster Village for all of the wonderful care shown to Bernice.
