Man may have died before car hit embankment
Town of Vandenbroek - A man who was killed when his car veered off U.S. 41 and struck an embankment might have been unconscious or dead before the collision, officials said.
Donald J. Edmonds, 30, 1338 W. Fourth St., Kimberly, died in the accident at 1:12 p.m. Wednesday along U.S. 41, one-half mile north of the State 55 interchange.
An autopsy was being performed today to determine a cause of death. Officials said the vehicle traveled off the highway for more than a half mile before the collision.
“We have reason to believe he had a medical problem that caused him to go off the road,” said Sgt. Harry Herres of the Outagamie County Sheriff's Department.
Edmonds, an employee of the Creamette Co., was driving a new, company-owned vehicle. Officials do not suspect a mechanical problem. Deputies said alcohol was not a factor in the accident.
Edmonds was driving south on 41 when his vehicle veered into the median strip. It traveled 2,917 feet before striking an embankment at a highway turnaround,. The car became airborne, crossed the turn-around, crashed into the median strip and overturned.
