  • Note: Vern Chalupa, age 87, passed away peacefully but unexpectedly on Thursday, November 21, 2013 at his home. Vern was born in Oshkosh on April 21, 1926, son of the late Frank and Minnie (Drinks) Chalupa. Vern graduated from high school in Oshkosh, and served his country faithfully during World War II as a member of the United States Navy from 1944 until 1946. Shortly after his honorable discharge, he married the former Josephine Kotkoskie in Oshkosh; she preceded him in death in 2000, after fifty-three wonderful years together. In his early years, Vern worked for Omar Bakery, a job which brought him to the Fox Valley area. He then worked as a sales representative for H.J. Heinz Company, was an independent insurance agent for many years, and also held down a second job at the Kimberly mill. He loved to read, and always enjoyed driving a nice car.

    Vern is survived by three children: Joanne (Raymond) Tompkins of Kimberly, Butch (Sandra) Chalupa of Kimberly, and Pati (Dick) Merbach of Kaukauna; nine grandchildren: Daniel (Tamra) Retlick, David Retlick, Melissa Tompkins, Thomas Tompkins, Stacey Hennessey, Angela (Sven) Loberg, Matthew (Holly) Merbach, Kiley Martin, and Alex Merbach. There are also four great-grandchildren: Hanna, Landon, Olivia, and Ava. Vern was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Josephine in 2000, and brothers Frank, Robert, and Bernard (Elizabeth) Chalupa.

    The Christian Funeral Service for Vern will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, November 25, 2013 at ST. LUKE EV. LUTHERAN CHURCH, 705 Greenfield Drive in Little Chute, with Rev. Ronald Szep officiating. Interment will be in Union Cemetery, Kaukauna. Family and friends are invited to gather at the church on Monday morning from 9:30 AM until the time of the service. Online condolences may be offered at www.wichmannfargo.com. A memorial fund for Vern is being established for St. Paul Elder Services.

    Vern will forever be remembered as a kind man who showed a genuine love for his family and for others. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him.

    The family would like to offer their appreciation to all of the caregivers at St. Paul Elder Services in Kaukauna. We will never forget the extra love and tender care you gave him during his stay.

  • Note: Eileen M. Johnson, Kaukauna, age 78, died peacefully on Tuesday, January 27, 2015 at Appleton Medical Center, with her family at her side, following a bout with pneumonia. She was born March 6, 1936 in Kaukauna, daughter of the late Joseph and Leona (Meulemans) DeBruin. On June 27, 1957 Eileen married James Johnson in Kaukauna, he preceded her in death. Eileen was employed by Piggly Wiggly for 20 years. She liked playing bingo and sheepshead and especially enjoyed time spent with her family and friends.



    She is survived by her son, Kevin (Terri) Johnson, Combined Locks; her daughter, Debra Johnson (William Bach), Superior; grandchildren: Emily (Tim) Opacich, Daniel St. John, Amanda (Clay) Davis, and Joshua Johnson; great-grandchildren: Aiden and Emma Davis, and Harper Opacich; 1 brother, Floyd (Karen) DeBruin, New London; a sister, Bernice Hahn, Neenah; sisters-in-law, Jean (Sylvester) Biertzer, West Bend and Joan Johnson, Seymour; brothers-in-law: Louis Vosters, California and Dominic Van Eyck, Kaukauna.

    She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, James, an infant daughter, Eileen Marie; brothers: Marvin and Francis (Carol); a sister, Carol (Doug) Vandenberg; brothers-in-law: Ben Hahn, Robert (Jane) Johnson and Richard Johnson; sisters-in-law: Arlene Van Eyck, Joyce Vosters, Lillian (Stanley) Verstegen, and Betty (Orville) Nieman.

    A Memorial Service for Eileen will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, February 13, 2015 at BOETTCHER FAMILY FUNERAL HOME, 2401 Fieldcrest Dr., Kaukauna with Fr. Jerry Pastors officiating.     Johnson, James D. James Johnson, age 72, passed away on Friday, September 14, 2007. Jim was born in Kaukauna on November 2, 1934, son of the late Elmer and Martha (Schmidli) Johnson. He served the United States Army for two years, and on June 27, 1957, married the former Eileen DeBruin in Kaukauna. Jim was employed by Thilmany Pulp and Paper in Kaukauna for 44 years.

    Jim is survived by his wife, Eileen Johnson; daughter: Debra (Dan) Kolodzeske of Superior and their children Kristin (Brandt) Charles, Heather Kolodzeske, Emily (Timothy) Opacich, and Daniel St. John; his son: Kevin (Terri) Johnson of Combined Locks and their children Amanda and Joshua; three great-grandchildren: Brett and Hailey Charles and Austin Cabrera; two sisters: Betty "Mutsy" Nieman of Appleton and Lillian "Sissy" Verstegen of Little Chute; four sisters-in-law: Jane Johnson of Appleton, Joan Johnson of Seymour, Jean DeBruin of Appleton, and Bernice ( Ben) Hahn of Neenah; and two brothers-in-law: Nick Van Eyck of Kaukauna and Louis Vosters of California.

    Jim was preceded in death by his parents, and infant daughter Eileen Marie, brothers Robert and Richard Johnson, sisters Arlene Van Eyck and Joyce Vosters, a sister-in-law Carol (Doug) Vandenberg, and brothers-in-law Stanley Verstegen, Orville Nieman, Francis "Fritz" (Carol) DeBruin, and Marvin DeBruin.

    Memorial Services for Jim will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, September 20, 2007, at FARGO FUNERAL HOME, 400 W. Wisconsin Ave., Kaukauna, with Fr. Jerry Pastors officiating. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the time of services.

    Mrs. Elenora ANDREWS, 67, died Thursday, March 8, in Medina Memorial Hospital where she had been a patient for two days. She had been living for a year and one-half with her daughter, Mrs. Albert HENRY of West Yates Center Road, Lyndonville.

    Mrs. ANDREWS was born in Hungary May 10, 1883. She came to the United States about 45 years ago and resided in Buffalo for several years. She spent the greater part of her life in this country in Kawkawna, Wisconsin, where she lived until September 1949. At that time she came to Yates.

    Surviving are five sons and seven daughters, as well as 24 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held from the Smythe Funeral Home, Lyndonville, at 2 p.m. Saturday with the Rev. Raymond Draffin officiating. Burial will be in Lynhaven Cemetery.

  • Note: George Andrews, age 89 of Appleton, passed away peacefully on June 14, 2017 at Rennes Care and Rehab in Appleton. George was born October 8, 1927 in Appleton, son of the late Steven and Eleonora (Szasz) Andrews. On July 8, 1950, he married Audrey Belongia in New Jersey, and together the couple has shared sixty-six wonderful years together. George served in the United States Navy during World War II, and was honorably discharged in 1947. He worked at Thilmany Pulp and Paper in Kaukauna for over forty years, retiring in 1989. In his retirement, he took up woodworking, and made rocking chairs for his grandchildren, along with bookshelves, benches, gun cabinets, and other furniture items. Everyone loved his work. Some of his favorite times were spent with his family, children, and grandchildren.

    George is survived by six children: Marcia (Bob) Verhagen of Frisco, Texas; Andy (Cindy nee Paltzer) Andrews of Darboy; Guy (Ann nee Hennes) Andrews of Darboy; Debbie (Tom) Dercks of Menasha; Pam (Rick) McGowan of Marinette, and Brian Andrews of Menasha. There are also eleven grandchildren: Scott Verhagen, Jason (Ashley) Verhagen, Justin (Brandi) Andrews, Kevin (Elyse) Andrews, Allison (Troy) Thiel, Abby (Ryan) Bowers, Ben (Liz) Dercks, George Dercks, Jennifer McGowan, Steven McGowan, and Kristen Woodke. His great-grandchildren are: Kailey (Tyler) Verhagen Swofford and soon to arrive great- great grandchild Sebastian, Blaze Verhagen, Breckin Verhagen, Hannah Verhagen, Emily Verhagen, Audrey Verhagen, Libby Verhagen, Wilson Andrews, Malcolm Andrews, Sawyer Thiel, Harper Thiel, Palmer Thiel, Drew Bowers, Dawson Bowers, Kayden Young, Tristen Gerrits, and Xander Gerrits. George is also survived by a special niece Joyce Walters and her family, as well as nephews Randy Brockman and Steve Hurkman.

    Other survivors include Audrey's family: Shirley (Mike) Donovan of DePere; Doug (Suzanne) Belongia of Prospect, Kentucky; Clayton (Carolyn) Belongia of Lombard, Illinois; Natalie (Jim) Kaufman of Summerfield, North Carolina; John Yashinsky of DePere.

    He was preceded in death by his parents, a great-grandchild Donald Young IV, eleven brothers and sisters, a sister-in-law, and a brother-in-law

    Visitation for George will be held on Friday, June 23, 2017 from 3:00 PM until 6:00 PM at the Wichmann Funeral Home, 537 N. Superior Street an Appleton. A brief service will be held at 5:00 PM. Following cremation, George will be buried at St. Mary Cemetery in Pickerel, Wisconsin, at 10:30 AM on Saturday, June 24.
