Hi my name is George J. Vander Loop, Sr. I was born in Little Chute on January 15, 1903 to John and Adrianna Vander Loop. I have 8 brothers and sisters. I started in the labor forces at age 15. Because of hard times, I was not able to finish the 8th grade. Instead of school, I needed to work to help my parents. My days started at 7 am to 6 pm 7 days a week. On 2 days, I worked until 9 pm at John Van Handel's Shoe Store, at 127 E. Main Street, an establishment I was later to call my own. I was able to purchase the store in 1944 and the building in 1945.

In the early days I hand packed ice cream and preformed many other duties as well as shoe repair. I worked as a cobbler from age 15 until age 80. I can remember the great depression very well. Some desperate people would come into the store not able to buy new shoes, so I would nail a round of soling over the hole of their shoes for a little cash. People would come into the store to pay 25 cents on their bills, and some even needed 3 years to pay it off.

My life has been filled with an assortment of community endeavors. I loved playing sports, amateur football, baseball and hockey. I coached the girl's basketball team and Shorty Shoes.

I then umpired baseball, football and hockey games in and around Outagamie County.

I am a past president and secretary of the Little Chute Kiwanis Club, Past Lt Governor of the Wisconsin-Upper Michigan Kiwanis District for 3 terms. I was president of the State Semi Pro football leagues, and past president of the Fox Valley baseball league.

I was a part time correspondent and photographer for the Post Crescent, as well as a Village of Little Chute Trustee, director of the River View Sanatorium, Past Faithful Navigator of the 4th Degree Knights of Columbus, and part time bailiff at the Outagamie County Courthouse.

I married Marjorie Dunn on June 14, 1927. We have 3 children: Patricia, George, Jr, and Marilyn. We also have 12 grandchildren.

I passed away at the age of 81 on April 21, 1984, Holy Saturday.
