She is survived by a son and daughter in law, Mark and Jane Kavanaugh, Kaukauna, two grandchildren Katie and Tracy, six brothers and sisters in law; Ervin and Martha Vanevenhoven, Arthur and Nellie, Ralph and Angelina, all of Little Chute, Henry and Harriet at Orville and, Alma Vanevenhoven, Kaukauna, Raymond and Rita Vanevenhoven, Neenah, three sisters and four brothers in law, Lillian and Martin Theisen, Neenah, Francis and Willard Vissars, Menasha, Evelyn and James Hermes, Little Chute, Willard Vandenheuvel, Kaukauna. She is preceded in death by her husband, Nick in 1984, also two sisters Angeline Vandenheuvel, RoseMary Vanevenhoven, a brother, Howard Vanevenhoven. The funeral was 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Holy Cross Catholic Church burial will be in the Highlands Memorial Park in Appleton. A memorial has been established.

  • Note: My grandpa, James Hermes, was born on May 1, 1923 to Peter and Nettie Hermes. He had two sisters, Frances and Elsie. He had one brother, Sylvester. He grew up living on VandenBroek Street, near the church.
    Peter Hermes worked at the Lox Mill in Combined Locks and also fixed watches. James also worked at the LOX Mill for 40 years. He built his own house, where he still lives today. He enjoys woodworking and wine making.
    He married Evelyn Vanevenhoven on August 28, 1947.

  • Note: James J. Hermes, Little Chute, age 88 died Monday October 10, 2011 at the St. Paul Home. He was born in Little Chute on May 1, 1923 to the late Peter J. and Nettie (Van Thiel) Hermes. Jim married Evelyn Vanevenhoven on August 28, 1947 at Holy Cross Parish in Kaukauna. He proudly served in the U.S. Army and was a member of the Jacob Coppus American Legion Post 258. Jim worked at the Combined Locks Paper Mill and retired after 44 years of service. Jim enjoyed golfing, bowling, fishing and spent a great deal of time in his workshop. He was a lifelong member of St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church. Many will remember Jim as a talented winemaker, sharing the fruits of his labor with family and friends. He treasured his family and was a wonderful father and grandfather.

    Jim is survived by his wife of 64 years, Evelyn; children: Susan (Mark) Van Lanen, De Pere; Sharon (James) Farrell, Princeville, IL; John (Mary) Hermes, Little Chute; and Chuck (Betsy) Hermes, Little Chute; grandchildren: Matthew, Andrew and Nicholas Van Lanen, Michael, Noah (Jill) and Madeline Farrell, Megan (David) Durflinger, Kyle (Hannah), Joshua, Allison, Taylor, Eric (Dacia) and Robbie Hermes and Marsha (Bernie) Hall; great grandchildren: Matthew, Maddalynn, Owen, Ava and Emma; and brothers and sisters-in-law: Frances Vissers and Alma Vanevenhoven. He is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

    In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by his father and mother-in-law John and Hattie Vanevenhoven; sisters and brother: Elsie (Gordon) Ludtke, Frances (Anthony) Janssen and Sylvester "Ves" (Joyce) Hermes; and sisters and brothers-in-law: Lillian (Martin) Thyssen, Marian (Nick) Kavanaugh, Angeline (Willard) Vanden Heuvel, Howard, Ervin (Martha), Raymond (Rita), Ralph (Angeline), Henry (Harriet), Rosemary, Arthur (Nellie) and Orville Vanevenhoven.

    Visitation will be held Saturday October 15, 2011 at ST. JOHN NEPOMUCENE CATHOLIC CHURCH (323 S. Pine St. Little Chute) beginning at 9:00 a.m. until time of Mass at11:00 a.m. The Rev.     Willard Van Den Heuvel 'Bill Formerly of 907 Woodland Dr., Kaukauna, age 84, passed away Tuesday, December 8, 1987, at St. Paul Home after a short illness. He was born July 13, 1903 in Little Chute. He had been employed at Neenah Foundry and was Beneral Superintendent for 38 years, retiring in 1972. He was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church and a former member of the Kaukauna Elks.

    He is survived by two daughters and a son in-law, Joyce Hermes, Kaukauna; Joan and Henry Etteldorf, Neenah; a son and daughter in-law, Eugene and Nooreen Vanden Heuvel, Neenah; four sisters and three brothers in-law, Rosella and Al Van Dyn Hoven, Stella Wallace and Merilla and Wenzel Romenesko, all of Little Chute; Ruth and Walter Romenesko, Shawano; 14 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren.


    He was preceded in death by his wife, Angeline, in 1982; three brothers, Martin, Edward, and Orville; a son in-law, Sylvester Hermes in 1982.

    Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday at Holy Cross Catholic with grandson, Father Jeffrey Vanden Heuvel and Father Jack Mullarkey, Pastor officiating. Burial will be in the parish cemetery. Friends may call at the Fargo Funeral Home, Kaukauna from 4-9 p.m. Thursday and after 8:30 a.m. Friday until the cortege leaves for the church. A prayer service will be 8 p.m. Thursday. A memorial has been established for the St. Paul Home.

He was a member and past president from 1958 to 1975 of Paper Makers the Union Local 20. He was a member of Kaukauna Knights of Columbus Council 1033, the Hearts Club and Visiting committee at Appleton Medical Center and also a member of the Thilmany Quarter century club. He is survived by his wife, Marion (Vanevenhoven) Kavanaugh, a son and daughter in law, Mark and Jane Kavanaugh, Kaukauna; two grand daughters, Katie and Tracy; four brothers and five sisters in law, James and Dorothy, Minneapolis, John and Jane, Madison, William and Eleanor, Florida, Robert and Rose, Little Chute, Mary Ellen Kavanaugh, Freedom, a sister and brother in law, Mary and Gerald Mauthe, Appleton, many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Michael. The funeral service will be at 1030 Wednesday morning at Holy Cross Catholic Church Kaukauna with Reverend David Beaudry officiating. Friends may call at the Greenwood funeral home from four until 9:00 p.m.

    Mrs. Mary VAnderaa Succumbs at 93; Funeral Friday
    Mrs. Mary Vanderaa, 93, 730 E. Main street, Little Chute, died at 3 o'clock Tuesday afternoon at her home after a long illness. She was the oldest native born resident of the village. One of the pioneer women of Little Chute, she was born there on March 1, 1854 lived there all her life, and had 180 living descendents.
    Mrs. Vanderaa was a member of St. Johanna's Court 555 of the Women's Catholic Order of Foresters and of St. Elizabeth society of St. John's church.
    survivors are a son, Peter, of Antigo, three daughters, Mrs. John Pennings and Mrs. Peter Jakels, both of Little Chute, and Mrs. Peter VanderWyst of Kaukauna, 37 grandchildren, 118 great-grandchildren, and 21 great-great-grandchildren.
    Funeral services will be held at 9 o'clock friday morning at St. John's church, Little Chute, with the Rt. Rev. Msgr, John J. Sprangers in charge. Burial will be in the parish cemetery, and friends may call at the Verkuilen funeral home after 7:30 tonight until the time of the services. Rosary will be recited at 8:15 tonight and Thrusday night.
