  • Note: A community cares
Ruth Ebben has a couple of words for the folks hereabouts.
    "Absolutely fantastic." '
She and her husband, Carl, lost a son to a hit-and-run driver on
Aug. 8. They haven't recovered yet from the shock of Tom's death three days after he was struck by a dark colored pickup truck as he rode his bike on County A north of Appleton. He was hit from behind. Police are still searching for the driver. '
    The Ebbens lost a son.
But in their grief, they came to realize that they live among people who are quick to share grief. People who are quick to love. Quick to care. Quick to share. , . "The best people in the world," as Ruth Ebben puts it.
What brought the Ebbens and the community so close was their
, son's need for blood as he lay in St. Elizabeth Hospital's intensive care unit with head and internal injuries. There was a critical need for blood almost immediately. Rare blood. Type B RH-negative. Only 1.5% of the world's population has that type, according to the Community
Blood Center in Appleton. "They gave Tom all the B-negative available at three local hospitals and all we had in stock," said Elizabeth Milhaupt, vice president of the Community Blood Center. They then switched to O-negative, which she described as "the universal donor," and he also received fresh, frozen plasma. It wasn't the greatest single demand for blood that the center l1as experienced, but the quantity needed and the rare type did put the staff to a test. Milhaupt had a breakdown of what the 16-year-old boy received: 33 units of red cells, 40 units of plasma and 16 units of platelet
concentrate. There was an immediate and urgent need to replenish the life-saving
fluid. An appeal for donors went out from the pulpit at St. Bernard Catholic Church during all of the masses on the Sunday after Tom died. The Ebbens have been members of the Appleton parish since it was started 15 years ago. The response, according to Tom's mother, was "overwhelming." 'Donors came forth from inside and outside the parish, as word of the need filtered through the community. ' ' Ruth Ebben received a letter from the Community Blood Center Wednesday; saying that already more than 60 units of blood had been donated in the family's name. And people were still coming in, Milhaup(
told me Wednesday afternoon. "Some of these people have never given blood before," she said. Many of them did not know Tom Ebben, or the Ebben family, but had heard about the need for blood. "One person brought three of her co'
Workers in here with her,' Milhaupt said. "They came because of Tom." The Rev. Orville Janssen, pastor at S1. Bernard, knew of several more people who went to the blood center to give, but were turned away because of medical problems. The parish and the community responded without a lot of fanfare, Janssen said. No committees were organized. Noone stoodup and offered to head the blood drive.People just went out and qUietly 'gave," Janssen said. There also was money. And food. And prayers. There were gestures ofconcern andsympathyandwordsofcomfort, RuthEbben said. "We just feel so privileged tobelong to a comnuunity like this."

Richard Edward Andrew Gloudemans was born on February 7, 1929, in Beaver Dam, Wisconsin, to Andrew and Elfie (Abendroth) Gloudemans. He moved to Appleton, with his family and he graduated from Appleton West High School in 1947. Dick began working for the Telephone Company and through work, he came back to Beaver Dam, where he met the love of his life, Helen Drexler. They were married in Beaver Dam in 1950, then lived in Appleton and California before settling in Beaver Dam. They raised five children, Charles (Valerie), Thomas (special friend Lil), Joseph (special friend Julie), Lisa (John) Williams, and Chris (Bill) Berger. After 35 years with the Telephone Company, Dick retired. He served as union president of the C.W.A. and was an active member. He volunteered at church in several ways through the years including paper drives, men's service, Knights of Columbus, and the Big Event. He supported the Apostolate to the Handicapped and attended the services yearly. He enjoyed doing things himself and he could build or fix anything. He had a lifelong love of the outdoors and loved to hunt and fish. He made many trips to Canada along with brother-in-law Carl Ebben (deceased), children, and grandchildren. He was an avid swimmer, ski-jumper, skater and boater. He taught hundreds to water ski and built hydroplanes and ice boats to skim Beaver Dam Lake. Dick was an avid Green Bay Packer fan and also loved to play cribbage with family and friends. He enjoyed his dear friends from card club and bowling. He loved to travel and went to Mexico yearly; he also traveled to Jamaica, California, Florida, the East Coast, and up north for the famous "Krivitz" weeks. Dick enjoyed hosting parties including fish boils and pig roasts. He will be sadly missed by his many friends. Dick also volunteered at CWCAC in Wisconsin Dells, where he served in the Food Pantry; he also volunteered here in Beaver Dam each month for the 2nd Harvest mobile pantry. He dearly loved his grandchildren and adored his great-grandchildren. He will be mourned by his grandchildren, Sarah Gloudemans (Bill Johnson), Zachary Gloudemans, Katie (Tim) Homan, Ryan Williams, Mason Gloudemans, Ben Williams, Isaac Berger, Jacob Williams, and Thomson Gloudemans; his great-grandchildren, Alizah Gloudemans, Tristen Homan, Aurora Homan, Grace Johnson, and Ellie Homan.

Dick loved this area and enjoyed watching the lake from his home - a special thanks to his neighbors, including Laura and Bruce and Judy and Greg, for making his years without Helen easier and more fun.

He is survived by and will be sadly missed by his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, his brother, Jim (Joyce) Gloudemans, sister-in-law, Flora (Mel) Ayers, and his many friends. He will also be sadly missed by all his nieces and nephews and their families. He will be remembered as loving and generous, always with an open door and fishing pole ready! We know he has joined his wife, Helen, in paradise, his parents, his parents-in-law, and his sisters, Elfie and Ruth.
