    Steffens, Lawrence G. Larry G. Steffens, age 71, died on Saturday, October 20, 2007, at his home in Suring, Wisconsin. Larry was born on December 18, 1935, in Appleton, to the late Lawrence and Dora (Ebben) Steffens. He attended St. Therese Catholic Grade School and graduated from Appleton West High School in 1954. Larry married Cleo Liethen at Sacred Heart Catholic Church on November 23, 1957. He served with the 127th Division of the National Guard and was called to the state of Washington during the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1961. Larry was hired at Asten Forming Fabrics when he was 18 years old. He worked in the Finishing Department, later becoming Plant Superintendent. Larry was employed at Asten Forming Fabrics for 35 years; he then was employed at Algoma Hardwoods for seven years until his retirement.

    He served as president of the Fox Valley Chapter of the National Management Association from 1985-1986. Larry belonged to the Pazaza Club and Golden K in Green Bay where he worked at brat fries and Meals on Wheels. For many years, Larry was president of the Ushers Committee at St. Bernadette Catholic Church. He also was a volunteer driver for the Veterans Administration. He enjoyed living at Kelly Lake. Larry also enjoyed reading, playing games on the computer and golf. He especially enjoyed golfing with friends and family, and belonging to the Mulligan Crew where he met a lot of wonderful people.

    Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Cleo; his daughter, Linda Steffens, Cheyenne, Wyoming; his son, Brian Steffens, Manawa; his son, Dan (Jamie) Steffens, Appleton; his brothers and sisters: Ceil Smith, Little Chute; Marge (Donald) Baer, Appleton; Mary Keller, Mesa, Arizona; Eugene (Connie Bartsch) Steffens, Oshkosh, and Kenneth Steffens (special friend, Mary Anaya), Appleton; his sisters-in-law: Betty Engstrom, Appleton; and Marion Steffens, Santa Barbara, California; his five grandchildren: Samantha and Austin Steffens, Joseph and Chyenne Steffens, and Brent Brouillard; and many nieces and nephews.

    He was preceded in death by his 19-year old son, Mark, in 1981; his brothers: Edward, Charles and Florian Steffens; his brothers-in-law: Donald Keller, Clifford Liethen and Lloyd Liethen; and his sister-in-law, June Schroeder.

    The Funeral Liturgy will be at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, October 24, 2007, at ST. BERNADETTE CATHOLIC CHURCH, 2331 East Lourdes Drive, Appleton, with Fr. Joseph Coopmans officiating. Friends may call directly at the church on Wednesday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of services. Entombment will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, Appleton.

    The family would like to extend a sincere thank you to the Oncology Department at St. Mary's Hospital, Dr. Anthony Jaslowski, Dr. Thomas J. Saphner and Ruth Bloesl, and all the nurses (especially Mary), who took special care of Larry. They would also like to thank Heartland Home Care and Hospice. Nurse Barb did a wonderful job making Larry comfortable. Paul Van Zeeland is especially thanked for his help and caregiving. The family would also like to thank all the friends that visited and offered to help and sent cards.

    Age 19, died at 12:53 a.m. Wednesday, the result of a motorcycle accident. He was born May 19, 1962, in Appleton, where he was a lifelong resident. He attended St. Bernadette Catholic Grade School and was a graduate of Appleton High School East, Class of 1980. He was employed by C.I. Hughes Construction Company. Mr. Steffens was a member of St. Bernadette Catholic Church, and a former member of its grade school basketball team.


    Survivors include his parents, Lawrence and Cleo Steffens, Appleton; two brothers; Brian and Daniel Steffens, both at home; a sister, Linda Steffens, at home; a girlfriend, Sydney Foate, Appleton; his maternal grandmother, Mrs. Joseph Liethen, Appleton.

    He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents and his maternal grandfather. The complete funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Bernadette Catholic Church, with the Rev. John Becker officiating. Interment will be in St. Joseph Cemetery. Friends may call at the Wichmann Funeral Home from 4 to 9 p.m. Wednesday and after 8 a.m. Thursday until the cortege leaves for the church. The prayer and scripture service will be at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday. A memorial fund is being established.

    Gene Steffens, age 76, passed away quietly Tuesday, 19 April 2016, at Kindred Hospital, Ocala, FL after a lengthy battle with pulmonary fibrosis. Gene was born 8 July 1939 to the late Dora (Ebben), and Lawrence Steffens. He attended St Therese Catholic Grade School and Graduated from Appleton, (now West), High School in 1957. He joined the National Guard right out of HS and later transferred to the Army/Army Reserve, retiring as a Master Sergeant after 23-years of service. Gene attended Fox Valley Technical School, receiving a degree in computer programming and worked as a programmer for several companies before retiring as a Systems Analyst from Rockwell International, Oshkosh, WI. He was able to fulfill his retirement dream of "wintering warm" when he became a resident of The Villages, FL.

    Gene was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Summerfield, FL and served there as an usher. He was proud of his military service and spent most of it "teaching Medics to be Medics". Gene truly appreciated and respected his military family. He loved a good story or joke and enjoyed playing sheepshead with family and friends. Gene looked forward to golfing with his wife, his summer foursome, Gus, Jack and Michael and winter friends Charlie and Ellen; but nothing pleased him more than fishing with his son Scott and grandson Chance, especially when the fishing took them to Canada.

    Survivors include his wife of 30-years Connie Bartsch, The Villages, FL, his son Scott, daughter-in-law Gina, and grandson Chance, as well as the mother of his sons, Susan (Miller) Eppinger, all of Madison, WI. Mother-in-law Jane Bartsch, Granton, WI; sisters and brothers-in law: Rick Bartsch Janeen Cooper, Stevens Point, WI, Peter Bartsch Gail Shavlik, North Richland Hills, TX, Kay Bartsch Loren Meddaugh, River Falls, WI, Jay and Renee Bartsch, Prescott, WI, a sister-in-law Marion (Edward) Steffens, Santa Barbara, CA, special friends Denton Engstrom and Mary Cone, both of Appleton, WI, plus the many treasured nieces and nephews scattered over the US.

    He was preceded in death by his sons: Steven and Todd, his brothers: Edward, Charles, Florien, Lawrence, and Kenneth; his sisters: Ceil Smith, Marge Baer, and Mary Keller, brothers-in-law: Don (Marge) Baer and Don (Mary) Keller; sister-in law Betty Engstrom; father-in-law Merle Bartsch.

    There will be a celebration of Gene's life, 1-pm, Monday, 20 June, at O'Hauser Park, North pavilion, Neenah, WI. Gene always said he wanted a celebration of his life; no mourning, no tears, just a casual gathering of his family and friends exchanging stories, jokes, and memories

    The funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 22, 1986, at Kessler Funeral Home, and at 11 a.m. at St. Gabriel Catholic Church with Fr. Michael Betley officiating.   • Birth: Kenneth Ledgard Steffens was born on May 27, 1942.
  • Death: He died on August 2, 2010, at age 68, in Appleton, Outagamie Co, Wisconsin.
  • Note: Ken Steffens passed away peacefully at Appleton Medical Center with his partner Mary at his side on August 2, 2010, after a six-month battle with esophageal cancer.

    Ken was born on May 27, 1942, in Appleton, the ninth child and sixth son to the late Lawrence and Dora Steffens. Ken was a lifelong resident of Appleton and graduated from Appleton High School in 1961. Ken enlisted in the U.S. Air Force serving the country from 1964 to 1968. After being honorably discharged, he went to college and graduated from the University of Wisconsin in Madison with an Engineering degree. Ken worked for both Marathon Engineering (Appleton) and James River (Green Bay) as an engineer designing and maintaining equipment at all their plants. In 1995, Ken started up KLS Engineering and began to do independent electrical system design contracting, having a long and successful career. His last contract was this year in between cancer treatments and surgery. Ken was an avid bowler, loved to golf and do crossword puzzles in his spare time. He was a very skilled handyman, building their house from scratch and always lending a hand to anyone needing help.

    Ken is survived by Mary Anaya and her children, Jesse, Roman, Chris, Mary Ann and Bob, grandchildren Morgan, Justin, Megan, Anna, Ethan and Kylee, his sister Marge Baer, brother Gene (Connie) Steffens, sister-in-laws Marian Steffens, Cleo Steffens and Betty (Denton) Engstrom.

    He was preceded in death by his brothers and sisters Ed, Chuck, Larry, Florian, Ceil Smith and Mary (Don) Keller and brother-in-law Donald Baer.

    Per Ken's request there will be no services held. His help and generous nature will be missed by all those close to him. The family would like to sincerely thank ThedaCare At Home for all their care and help over the last several months.

She married George Scheibe September 21, 1920, and she and her husband lived and farmed in the Town of Freedom most of their lives. She was a member of St. Nicholas Catholic Church, Christian Mothers, the Third Order of St Dominic and the Golden Agers.

    Survivors include six daughters and five sons in-law; Dorothy and William Vander Hyden, Appleton; Virginia [Harvey] Haertl, Houston, Texas; Edna and Jerome Van Wychen, Kaukauna; Marion and Norbert Brittnacher, Greenleaf; Magdalene and Gordon Kieffer, Freedom; Margaret Ann and John C. Burke, Prior Lake, Minnesota; three sisters; Mrs. Harold [Mary] Sachs and Mrs. Josephine Feavel, both of Appleton; Mrs. Agnes [Jerome] Heindel, Kaukauna; 32 grandchildren; 23 great grandchildren.

    She was preceded in death by her husband, George; three sisters; Minnie, Dora and Margaret; four brothers; Pete, John, Nick and Joe; two grandchildren.

    The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Nicholas Catholic Church, Freedom, with the Rev. Leander Nickel and the Rev. William Rickert officiating.     He survived by his wife, Rose Ebben Scheibe; six daughters, Mrs. William (Dorothy) Vander Hyden of Appleton; Mrs. Harvey [Virginia] Haertl of Houston, Texas; Mrs. Jerome [Edna] Van Wychen of Kaukauna; Mrs. Norbert [Marion] Brittnacher of Greenleaf; Mrs. Gordon [Magdalene] Keiffer of Rt. 2, Kaukauna; Mrs. John [Margaret Ann] Bruke of Prior Lake, Minnesota; a sister and brother in-law, Paul and Emma Kowalski of Milwaukee; 34 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.

    The funeral will be Wednesday at 10 a.m. at St. Nicholas Catholic Church in Freedom with the Rev. Alfred Hietpas officiating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery.     Vander Hyden, Dorothy P. "Dottie" Dorothy Vander Hyden, of Appleton, age 85 years, passed away peacefully with her family by her side on May 25, 2007, at Franciscan Care Center. She was born June 14, 1941, in Kaukauna, the daughter of the late George and Rose (Ebben) Scheibe. On June 14, 1941, at St. Nicholas Catholic Church in Freedom, she married William J. Vander Hyden. Dottie was a long time, charter member of St. Pius X Catholic Church. She worked for Zwicker Knitting Mill for 38 years, retiring in 1984. Dorothy loved her flower beds and her dear pets, Muffet, Andre and Heidi. She enjoyed mowing the lawn and shoveling the snow. Dottie truly enjoyed life with her many nieces, nephews and godchildren and was especially blessed by the kindness of Gary Van Wychen and Greg Brittnacher and their families.

    Dottie is survived by her sisters: Edna (Jerome) Van Wychen, Kaukauna; Marion Brittnacher, Wrightstown and Margaret Burke, Savage, MN; sister-in-law, Nancy Shimek, Two Rivers. She is further survived by many loving nieces, nephews and nine godchildren.

    Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, Bill Vander Hyden on January 11, 1992, her sisters: Virginia (Harvey) Haertl and Magdalene (Gordon) Kieffer and brothers-in-law, Norbert Brittnacher and Jay Burke.

    The funeral liturgy for Dorothy will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, May 30, 2007, at ST. PIUS X CATHOLIC CHURCH, 500 W. Marquette St., Appleton, with Fr. Quinn Mann officiating. Inurnment will take place at St. Joseph Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church on Wednesday from 10:30 a.m. until the time of mass. Memorials are appreciated to the Harbor House.

    The family would like to thank the staff at Franciscan Care Center, especially Suzi for their excellent care of Dottie.

    Age 78, passed away Saturday, January 11, 1992 at a local nursing home. He was born June 30, 1913 in the the Town of Buchanan, the son of the late Antone and Anna Marie [Zommers] Vander Hyden. On June 14, 1941 he married the former Dorothy Scheibe in Freedom, she survives . Over the course of his life, Bill worked in many fields, but most recently was employed as an auto mechanic for Pierce Manufacturing. Following his retirement, he worked part time as a custodian at the Zwicker Knitting Mill.

    Survivors include his wife, Dorothy, Appleton; five sisters, Elizabeth Cimaglio, Wheeling, Illinois; Mary Fuhrmann, Sacramento, California; Harriet [Morris] Martin, Clintonville; Anne Everett, Newman, California; and Nancy [Lloyd] Shimek, Two Rivers; four sisters in-law, Virginia Haertl, Houston, Texas; Edna [Jerome] Van Wychen, Kaukauna; Marion [Norbert] Brittnacher, De Pere; Margaret [John] Burke, Prior Lake, Minnesota.

    Bill was preceded in deathy by an infant sister; and infant brother; a sister in-law, Magdalen Kieffer; and three brothers in-law, Henry Cimaglio; Harvey Haertl, and 'Sparky' Everett.

    The Mass of Ressurection will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, January 15, 1992 at St. Pius X Catholic Church, 500 W. Marquette St. with Father David Schmidt officiating. Interment will be at St. Joseph Cemetery. Friends may call Wednesday directly at the church from 10 a.m. until the hour of the mass. The family has established a memorial fund in Bill's name. The Wichmann Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
