John William Ebben

  • Birth: John William Ebben was born on March 27, 1897 in Freedom, Outagamie Co, Wisconsin.
  • Marriage: He and Lauretta Scheibe were married on May 30, 1922.
  • Death: John William Ebben died on November 30, 1951, at age 54.
  • Burial: He was buried in St Nicholas Cemetery, Freedom, Wisconsin.
  • Note: They had no children, but raised John's nephew, Myron (Mike) Ebben. John and Lauretta famred on VanAsten Rd, the first farm on the left, east of County Road J. They sold the farm to Roland Grode around 1945 and moved to Freedom, with John worki ng in Appleton. He was killed on his way to work in a car accident caused by slippery road conditions at the present intersection of OO and E. OO was 41 at that time. His car slid into the rear wheels of a semi, causing the car to spin around , throwing John from the car.

    John Ebben was born March 27, 1897, in Freedom and lived in the vinicity all of his life. He was a farmer until 1945 when he sold his farm and moved into Freedom. He was employed at the Fox River Tractor Company, Appleton. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Kaukauna Concil 1033, and Holy Name and St. Therese Societies of St. Nicholas Catholic Church of Freedom.

    Survivors are his mother, Mrs. Jacob Ebben of Appleton; a foster son, Private Myron Ebben stationed at Fort Bliss, Texas; three brothers, Peter, Nicholas and Joseph, all of Appleton; six sisters; Mrs. Jerome Heindl, and Mrs. Joseph Steffen of Kaukauna; Mrs. Lawrence Steffen, Mrs. Harold Sachs, and Mrs. Ladgard Feavel, of Appleton; and Mrs. George Scheibe of Freedom.

    The cortege will form at 9 o'clock Monday morning at the Greenwood Funeral Home and services will be at 9:30 at St. Nicholas Church. Burial will be in the parish cemetery. The Rev. Joseph Kools will be in charge. Friends may call at the funeral home after 7 o'clock Saturday night and the rosary will be recited at 8 o'clock Saturday and Sunday nights.

    Mrs. John W. (Loretta Scheibe) Ebben Freedom, age 64, passoed away Monday at 7:15 AM at St. Vincent Hospital, Green Bay, after a short illness. She was born in Freedom April 10, 1897 and lived in that vicinity all of her life. Mrs Ebben wa s a member of the Christian Mother's Society of St. Nicholas Catholic Church, Freedom, the Third Order of St. Francis ant the K. of C. Ladies of Council 1033, Kaukauna.
    Survivors are one son, Myron, Kaukauna; one brother, George, Freedom; one sister, Mrs. Paul (Emma) Kowalski, Milwaukee; three grandchildren. Funeral services will be Wednesday at 10 AM at St. Nicholas Catholic Church, Freedom with burial in th e parish cemetery. Friends may call at the Greenwood Funeral Home, Kaukauna, after 7 PM Monday and rosary will be prayed at 8 PM Monday and Tuesday.

    Mrs. Lawrence A. Steffens (Dora Ebben) 118 N. Hall Ave., Appleton, passed away at 7:30 a.m. Saturday following a lengthy illness. She was born March 8, 1899, in Freedom, where she lived until moving to Appleton in 1828. Mrs. Steffens was a member of St. Thomas More Catholic Church, Christian Mothers Society, Third Order of St. Francis, the Monte Alverno Retreat Guild, the Golden Agers Club, the AARP, the World War I Veterans Auxiliary and was a past president of the Catholic War Veterans Auxiliary.

    She is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Cecilia Smith, Mrs. Donald (Marge) Baer abd Mrs. Donald (Mary) Keller, all of Appleton; six sons, Edward of Santa Barbara, Calif., Charles, Lawrence Jr. and Kenneth, all of Appleton, Florian, of Culver City, Calif., and Eugene, of Madison; one brother, Joseph Ebben, Appleton; four sisters, Mrs. Harold (Mary) Sachs and Mrs. Josephine Feavel, both of Appleton, Mrs. George (Rose) Schelbe, Freedom, and Mrs. Jerome (Agnes) Heindel of Kaukauna; 30 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren.

    She was preceded in death by her husband in 1967 and also by two brothers and two sisters.

    The complete funeral will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Thomas More Catholic Church. The Rev. Gerald S. Falk will officiate. Interment will be at St. Joseph Cemetery. Friends may call at the Wichmann Funeral Home from 3-9 p.m. Monday and after 8 a.m. Tuesday until the cortege leaves for the church. There will be prayer and scripture services at 8 p.m. Monday.

    Lawrence A. Steffens

    Age 72, passed away at his home at 9 a.m. Thursday after a long illness. Her was born December 22, 1894 in Black Creek and had been an Appleton resident since 1929. He was employed at Appleton Coated Paper Co. for 27 years until his retirement due to ill health in 1959. Mr. Steffens was a member of the Holy Name Society of St. Therese Catholic Church and a member of the Catholic War Veterans, having served in the Army in World War I.

    Survivors are his wife, Dora; three daughters, Mrs. Cecelia Smith, Mrs. Donald (Margaret) Baer and Mrs. Donald (Mary) Keller, all od Appleton; six sons, Edward, Milwaukee, Charles, Memphis, Tenn., Florian, Culver City, Calif., Lawrence Jr., Appleton, Eugend, Neenah, Kenneth, at home; two brothers, Leo, Appleton, and Paul, Seymour; 29 grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren.

    Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday from St. Therese Catholic Church with interment in St. Joseph Cemetery. Friends may call at the Wichmann Funeral Home after 3 p.m. Friday where the rosary will be prayed at 8 p.m.

    Smith, Cecelia P. Cecelia P. Smith, 87, died Friday, Nov. 23, 2007, at Parkside Care Center, Little Chute. She was born in Freedom on April 2, 1920, to the late Lawrence and Dora (Ebben) Steffens. She was a member of St. Pius X Catholic Church.

    Cecelia is survived by her children, Gerald C. Sr., Menasha; Charles (Carol), Menasha; Henry, Michigan; W. Joseph (Vanesa), Neenah; Mary Boelter, Neenah; Shirley (Arthur) Hopfensperger, Combined Locks; Charlotte Bavinck, Appleton; Kathy (Alan) Demerath, Fla.; and Grace (Brad) Cooper, N.C.; sisters, Marge (Donald) Baer and Mary Keller; brothers, Eugene (Connie) Steffens and Ken (special friend Mary Anaya) Steffens; and sisters-in-law, Betty Steffens-Engstrom, Cleo and Marian Steffens. She is further survived by loving grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.

    Cecelia was preceded in death by her parents; her son, Harry Smith; three grandchildren, Vicki, Cory and Dale; her son-in-law, John Bavinck; her brothers, Florian, Edward, Charles, and Lawrence Steffens; and brother-in-law, Donald Keller.

    Visitation will be held Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2007, at ST. PIUS X CATHOLIC CHURCH (500 W. Marquette, Appleton) beginning at 9:30 a.m. until the time of Mass at 11:30 a.m. The Rev. Thomas Farrell will officiate. Committal will be at St. Joseph Cemetery, Appleton. In lieu of flowers, a memorial will be established.

    The family would like to extend a sincere thank you to Parkside Care Center the nurses and staff, and Heartland Home Care and Hospice who did a wonderful job making Cecelia comfortable.

Following their divorce , he married Betty Mikkelsen, April 8, 1972, in Janesville. He was employed for many years as a Roofer in the Janesville area and prior to his retirement was a custodian at Regal-Beloit Corporation. He was a member of Mosse Lodge No. 197. Survivors include his wife; four sons: Gerald C. Sr., and Charles, both of Menasha; Henry, Appleton; W. Joseph, larsen; six daughters: Marion Boelter, and Charlotte Bavinck, both of Appleton; Shirley Hopfensperger, Combined Locks; Kathleen Demerath, Groton, Connecticut; Grace Smith, Sprindale, Arkansas; Doris Smith, Beloit; 19 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a sister, Annaceil Harter, Wausau; four brothers: Clyde, marvin, Jerome and Joseph, all of Appleton. He was preceded in death by his father, Henry, in 1958, his mother, harriet, in 1924, a son, Harry, in 1980 and grandson and a grandaughter. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at OVerton Funeral Home, Janesville, followed by cremation.

    VandenBoogart, David L. "Daisey" David L. "Daisey" VandenBoogart, age 66, of Menasha, passed away Saturday, July 8, 2006, at Franciscan Care Center, Appleton. He was born August 30, 1939, in Little Chute, WI, to the late Lawrence and Lucille (Welch). He attended St Johns Vocational School for the Blind. David was a caring and open-minded man. He was always willing to help others in need and was very loving to all who knew him.

    He enjoyed spending time with all of his children. David also was very energetic and was always on the go. There was nothing that could stop David from succeeding in the things he wanted to accomplish. He also enjoyed listening to TV. He also enjoyed time spent with his cousin Richard Vanhammond; especially trading things, drinking together, talking about old times and many other things.

    He will be sadly missed by his seven children: Anna, Steven, Douglas, Katie and Lucynda VandenBoogart, Tuesday Ehrgott, Debbie (David) Wilcox ; four grandchildren; four sisters and a brother; previous wife, Lisa Collar; and also many other friends and family.

    David was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Vicky VandenBoogart; and a close friend, Terry "Fuzzy" Akie.

    A Memorial Service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, July 12, 2006, at Valley Funeral Home with Father Dennis Ryan officiating. Friends are welcome from 11:30 a.m. until the time of the service.

  • Note: Oscar Ervin Boelter, age 78, of Neenah, passed away peacefully, Tuesday morning, September 1, 2015, at the Alten Haus Assisted Living. Oscar was born September 26, 1936, the son of the late Julius and Sabina (Hartman) Boelter in Bryant, Wisconsin.

    Oscar worked in farming all his life, and loved working the farm fields. His real passion was riding his Harley Davidson motorcycles, and will be remembered for being a huge Green Bay Packer fan. Also to be remembered was that Oscar always loved a good meal of meat and potatoes.

    He is survived by his children, Debbie (David) Wilcox, Tuesday (William) Coon, Dan (Evelyn Koehnke) Boelter, and Lisa (Brett Jungwirth) Arndt; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren with one more on the way. Oscar is further survived by his brother, Eugene (Sharon) Boelter; sister, Verna Bauer; and numerous nieces and nephews.

    In addition to his parents, Oscar was preceded in death by his five brothers, Arnold, Harold, Alvin, Charles and James; and three sisters, Louis, Irene and Margaret.

    A Celebration of Oscar's Life will be held on Sunday, September 20, 2015, from 10 A.M. - 11:00 A.M., with a Memorial Service to follow at 11:00 A.M.., at the Valley Funeral Home, 2211 N. Richmond Street, Appleton. A luncheon will be served following the service. Burial will follow the luncheon at 5 P.M., in the Bent Cemetery, in Bryant, Wisconsin.

    A Special Thank You to the Alten Haus and Heartland Hospice for the wonderful care given to Oscar.
