    Lawrence H. West, Oakridge Gardens Nursing Center, formerly of Neenah, age 88, was born to erernal life, Saturday, June 8, 1991. He was born January 28, 1903 in Freedom, the son of the late Henry and Minnie (Ebben) West and had resided in the Fox Valley all of his life. Larry owned and operated West Barber Shop on Sherry St. in Neenah for 40 years until his retirement in 1968. He was a former member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and a member of the Barbers Union.
    Survivors includ a daughter and a son in-law; Mary Ann and Gerald Gleason, Menasha; four sons and three daughters in-law; Donald and Ruth West, Appleton; Marvin and Wanda West, Sauk City, Wi; Gene and Phyllis West, Appleton; L. Allen West, Neenah; two brothers and a sister in -law; Joseph West and Edward and Isabell West, all of Appleton; 20 grandchildren and 30 great grandchildren, also nieces and nephews. Besides his parents Larry was preceded in death by his first wife, Cecilia (Quella) West in 1963; his second wife, Marcella (Grimmer) West in 1986; a son, Wayne in 1991; also six brothers and five sisters.
    The mass of resurrection will be celebrated at 11 AM Wednesday, June 12, 1991 at the St. Joseph School Gym with the Rev. Pius Cotter officiating. Interment will be in the St. Joseph Cemetery. Friends may call at the Brettschneider-Trettin-Lederer Funeral Chapel, 606 N. Oneida St. from 4-8 PM Tuesday and after 10 AM Wednesday directly at the school gym until the time of service. A prayer service will be held 7 PM Tuesday.

    Age 56, passed away at 9 p.m. Tuesday after a lingering illness. She was born April 25, 1907 in the Town of Menasha and had resided in Appleton her entire life. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, the Christian Mothers Society, the Third Order of St. Francis, a member of the Catholic War Veteran Auxiliary.

    Mrs. West is survived by her husband, one daughter, Mrs. Gerald (Mary Ann) Gleason, E. De Pere, five sons, Donald, Eugene and L. Allen, all of Appleton; Marvin, US Air Force; Wayne, Neenah; four brothers, Henry, Joseph, Andrew and Raymond Quella all of Appleton; two sisters, Mrs. Norman Foxgrover, Kaukauna; Mrs. Theodore Vander Putten, Appleton; 14 grandchildren.

    Funeral services will be held at 9 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, the cortege forming at 8:30 a.m. at the Brettschneider Funeral Home. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home after 3 p.m. Thursday. Parish rosary and the Christian Mothers rosary will be prayed at 7:30 p.m. Thursday and the Third Order rosary will be prayed at 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

    Mrs. Lawrence West (Marcelia Berg Grimmer) 946 W. Cecil St. Neenah, age 76,died Saturday morning, November 1, 1986 at Theda Clark Regional Medical Center. She was born May 31, 1910 in Kaukauna, daughter of the late Fred and Alice Langenberg Berg. She married Wilmer Grimmer and he died in 1955. She married Lawrence West May 15, 1965. She was employed at Great Northern Container before retiring. She was a member of St. Gabriel Catholic Chuch, Neenah.
    Survivors include her husband, Lawrence; two sons and daughters in-law; James and Audrey Grimmer, Appleton; Robert and Diane Grimmer, Menasha; five stepsons and their wives; Don and Ruth West, Appleton; Marvin and Wanda West, Madison; Eugene and Phyllis West, Appleton; Wayne and Arlene West, Fremont; Alan West, Neenah; a step daughter and her husband, Mary and Jerry Gleason, Menasha; two brothers; Cy and Roman Berg both of Kaukauna; two sisters; Louise Damro and Leone Lamers, both of Kaukauna; four grandchildren, 20 step grandchildren and 24 step great grandchildren.
    She was preceded in death by five sisters and one brother. The funeral will be at 10:15 AM at the kessker funeral Home and at 10:45 AM at St. Gabriel Catholic Church with Fr. Richard Allen officiating. Interment will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, Appleton. Friends may call at the Kessler Funeral Home from 6 until 8 PM Sunday. A prayer service will be held at 8 PM.

  • Note: Donald Joseph West, 87, of Appleton, passed away Saturday January 21, 2017 at St. Elizabeth Hospital. He was born October 1, 1929 in Appleton, son of the late Lawrence and Cecelia (Quella) West. Donald married Ruth Weber on May 16, 1948.

    Donald graduated from Appleton High School in 1947. He was very active in planning many of his high school reunions. Donald was a long time, active member at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Appleton, where he also volunteered his time and many talents to several church groups and activities. He was a founding member and first president of C.A.C. and the first president of Appleton East P.A.C; he was a board member of the UW- Whitewater Parents Association, and director of the Daybreak Singers. One of Donald's greatest joys was his many years coaching youth basketball. He also volunteered with the Special Olympics and at St. Elizabeth Hospital. Donald loved reading and was an avid card player, but his greatest love was spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

    Donald is survived by his high school sweetheart and loving wife of 68 years, Ruth; their seven children: David (Liz), Prescott, AZ, Glen (Maija), Peggy (Dan) Murphy, Jeff (Colleen), Paula (Gary) Weber, Amy (Duane) Charais, all of Appleton, and Kathy West, Myrtle Beach, SC; 20 grandchildren: J.D., Jon, Kelly, Brianna, Nathan, Erin, Josh, Angelica, Tierney, Lisa, Laura, Ryan, Kayla, Megan, Jessica, Daniel, Hannah, Jasmine, Nathan and Nicholas; seven great-grandchildren: Elijah, Anna, Jack, Jace, Henry, Lydia, and Ephraim; a brother, L. Allen (Sue), Appleton, and sister, Mary Gleason, Menasha. He is further preceded in death by three brothers: Eugene, Marvin and Wayne; and his mother in-law, Anna Weber.

    Visitation for Donald will be held from 4:00 until 8:00 PM on Friday evening, January 27, at Valley Funeral Home. Mass of Christian burial for Donald will be 1:30 PM on Saturday, January 28, 2017 at ST. JOSEPH CATHOLIC CHURCH, 410 W Lawrence St, Appleton, with Fr. Jim Leary OFM CAP and Fr. John Holly OFM CAP co-celebrating. Visitation will be held on Saturday at the church beginning at 12:30 until 1:15 PM, with Mass to follow at 1:30 PM.

  • Death: Ruth Frieda Weber died on October 16, 2017, at age 86.
  • Note: Ruth Frieda West, 86, of Appleton, passed away peacefully Monday October 16, 2017. She was born, May 16, 1931 in Mannheim, Germany, daughter of the late Anna Weber. Ruth came to America through Ellis Island, NY aboard the USS St. Louis in September 1937. She became a citizen of the United States on July 1, 1952. Ruth married Donald West on May 17, 1948. He preceded her in death on January 21, 2017.

    Ruth worked at St. Elizabeth Hospital for many years, retiring in 1993. She was a long time member at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Appleton. Ruth was very talented in many areas. She volunteered her time and talent at St. Joseph church. She enjoyed dancing and her crafts. Ruth had a "green thumb" when it came to her flower garden. She loved caring for all of her indoor and outdoor plants. Her greatest love was for her family, cooking for and spending time with them, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

    Ruth is survived by her seven children: David (Liz), Prescott, AZ, Glen (Maija), Peggy (Dan) Murphy, Jeff (Colleen), Paula (Gary) Weber, Amy (Duane) Charais, all of Appleton, and Kathy West (Petra Sander), Myrtle Beach, SC; 20 grandchildren: J.D., Jon, Kelly, Brianna, Nathan, Erin, Josh, Angelica, Tierney, Lisa, Laura, Ryan, Kayla, Megan, Jessica, Daniel, Hannah, Jasmine, Nathan and Nicholas; and eight great-grandchildren: Elijah, Anna, Jack, Jace, Knox, Henry, Lydia and Ephraim.

    Visitation for Ruth will be held on Friday October 20, 2017 from 5:00 until 8:00 PM at Valley funeral home. A Mass of Christian burial for Ruth will be 11:00 AM on Saturday morning October 21 at ST. JOSEPH CATHOLIC CHURCH, 410 W Lawrence St., Appleton with Fr. Jim Leary OFM CAP officiating. Visitation will be held at the church Saturday morning beginning at 10:00 until 10:45 AM, with Mass to follow at 11:00 AM.

    Ruth's family would like to extend a very special thank you to the entire staff at both The Gardens Adult Family Homes and Affinity Home Health and Hospice, for all of their loving care and compassion.

    Ruth is reunited once again with her high school sweetheart and loving husband of 68 years, Donald. She is in the grace and presence of Jesus, all of her pain and suffering is finally gone.
